I hope all of our members, in southern California, are safe from the fires. Though not a member here and I do not personally know Mr. John Beaver. He's the gentleman who makes and demonstrates the "wave bowls". I saw, on social media, that his home and shop were both destroyed over night. He said he and his family are safe but everything was lost. Our Patriot Turners- @Fred W. Hargis Jr posted a question about what might have caused his newly turned bowl to develop cracks. Fred received lots of input and some great tips on turning green wood. Tim Yoder provides a short tour of the inside of the lathe headstock- Expand Your Horizons- I don't always put a gloss finish on my turnings. But, as @HandyDan pointed out, the gloss finishes seem to get more attention. These two videos demonstrate how to get that high gloss finish using "Spar Varnish". This one is from Sam Angelo using the technique from Stephen Sinner I've made "cabriole legs" but there is little or no turning in the process. There is a style of leg called "Sheraton" leg which does utilize the lathe for most of the process. End of January already. Friday is Groundhog Day and in 2 weeks it's Fastnacht Day! Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker posted images of a bird turning. This one is different than the small birds he adds to his bird house ornaments Check out Steve's post for his description and inspiration for these lovely likenesses. Keeping with the bird theme, @HandyDan posted some awesome birdhouses/gnome houses Dan has gotten those tiny birds down to an science! Hargis Jr posted a safety oriented video that reminds us there are dangers lurking when using the lathe! I, for one, will take this video to heart. For The Newbies- If you are considering using traditional tools for bowl turning, you may be confused by all of the different "grinds" or shapes for the bowl gouge. In this short video, Lyle Jamieson discusses his signature grind and why he uses it. In these two videos, the common thread is to use "green" (freshly cut) wood. Green wood turns much easier than dried wood. It is less expensive than the exotics. Well so far the big snow storm has been more hype than happen. About 6" on the ground and very little happening now. The weather folks are still predicting it to pick up over night. I guess we'll see. Nine days until Christmas!! Although we exceeded our goal for our Gold Star family, you can still donate and get in on the raffle. Our Patriot Turners- @Ron Altier posed a couple of questions to our forum, this past week. His first question dealt with a turning technique. Our members provided their thoughts, what are yours- Ron showed us some ornament turnings and asked how they were done. Several members provided sources for tools and information as to techniques. Maybe you can add your knowledge- Ron also posted a picture of what's left of his exotic wood collection. Knowing Ron, he'll be able to get a couple more ornaments out of this collection- @Steve Krumanaker May have taken a hiatus from our forum a little while back but it certainly didn't affect his turning skills. Steve posted several projects this past week. First up was more of his birdhouse ornaments. His post contained many more examples- Steve was lucky enough to get a maple log from his tree guy. What a surprise it held when he turned it into a bowl- Please see his post for additional images of this awesome piece- But Steve still wasn't done making us jealous! He turned another batch of honey dipper for a customer who sells Bee products- Steve uses a laser to decorate his lids and answered questions about the finish. @Gerald and @Steve Krumanaker both do a lot of Pyrography. Gerald got a new pyrography station and posted it for us to drool over- @FlGatorwood used some really old pine to turn some beautiful pens. We don't normally think of pine for this but the old growth pine has gorgeous color and grain patterns- You may remember that Paul ( @Masonsailor) got a new lathe. He had the opportunity to get it dirty this past week- Paul can sure make some pretty turnings! @AndrewB Scored some birch and cherry logs from his neighbor- He has already started turning them into bowls! I've been wanting to try my hand at greenwood carving, particularly spoon carving. I decided that, to give myself every chance to succeed, I would need a bench dedicated to carving. I checked youtube, carving forums, etc and decided that a log mule/carving bench would fit the bill. It just so happened that my mother, last week, had asked me to remove some downed trees from her yard. Enter this weekend's project. First, stripping the bark from an oak log....... Then, it's time to cut the legs to size......... And then, the shaping begins. Doing this with hand tools only is quite a challenge (a Poulan is a hand tool, right?) And thus, ends the first day of work on the mule/bench.

A fellow cut down a chestnut tree, not knowing it was being watched and cared for by the University of Georgia. I was given some of the wood. By the time I got it, some of it had already developed cracks, so I wanted to seal it. I looked around and found a package of food canning wax, got out my blower heater, and melted it onto the ends. Took about 30 seconds, didn't need to melt a bunch of wax and dip the ends in it, and it seemed to do a good job. I had been putting a pan on a heater, melting it, and dipping it. Thought someone else might like the idea.

A Solution To Facilitate Turning Any Wood And Prevent Cracking Of Green

I stumbled across this article on a guy's website here: http://www.ronkent.com/techniques.php I haven't tried this solution yet, but I'm going to. His goal was to pickup a piece of green wood, turn it, sand it and finish it within a day or two without unsightly cracks occurring Some goal I'm thinking. He says (from the web Page) : "I went to Costco and purchased four half gallon containers of the magic elixir along with a sturdy plastic storage bin of sufficient size to hold the mixture and some bowl blanks. Upon arrival at home, I emptied the detergent into the container and added an equal amount of water. From then on, I would take primarily green wood and rough turn in one day, soak overnight, and finish the next day. Sometimes I didn't finish it on the second day and left it mounted on the lathe overnight and sometimes for a several days. Surprise! They didn't crack! I have since taken green wood, rough turned it, soaked it about four hours and then finish turned it and finished it in one day. In the six to eight months I have been using this technique, I haven't had one bowl crack. A few had a bit of movement, but it was very slight. I have used the following woods: black walnut, vine maple, maple, oak (kiln dried), yew, honey locust, fruiting cherry, birch, plum, apple. " He uses an amber dish soap concentrate that he gets from CostCo branded Kirkland I'll need to find some one with a CostCo card, or just go web surfing for amber dish soap concentrate. He dilutes the soap concentrate 1 - 1 with water. He's tried Alcohol but thinks it's too expensive to justify it. He cuts his green wood to about an inch thick and starts treating it with the soap He claims the shavings are much improved and cut quality s better He says that it does not interfere with his oil soak & sand in Varathane finishing regimen and that it makes sanding better. The whole time I'm reading this I'm thinking that it just has to interfere with his finishes but he says it doesn't. There's even a sort of scientific explanation for why the solution works and at $7.00 a gallon it's a lot cheaper than the stuff they sell for the job. Check it out.
