February 15, 20242 yr Popular Post Long story short, I was eyeballing a tree that Picture This said was a butternut (white walnut). I'm 99% convinced it's black walnut. I'm holding out a 1% hope that it's a butternut with really dark heartwood. I'll need to get into it more (need a new chainsaw chain). Anyway, I h ave a personal tradition. When I cut down a tree, I make a bowl right away. In this case I cut out a crotch. I split the crotch to leave the pith on one half. This is the smaller half, consisting entirely of sapwood. My picture timestamps say it was an hour and a half from the time I cut into the tree to the time I had the bowl turned. Apologies for blurry pics.
February 15, 20242 yr Popular Post Hard maple I finished a week or so ago. A friend took my photos and did some Photoshop magic. These are all the same bowl (duh). It's about 8" across. Finished with Myland's.
February 15, 20242 yr Excellent Kent. Agree with Fred, sure looks like Black Walnut. BTW, love your logo embossing. Is it laser? Thanks for sharing.

Yep, laser. The Laserpecker 1 is about $300. I share images directly from Google Photos to Laserpecker. Couldn't be easier. The log incorporates my falconry background.

February 20, 20242 yr Very cool @RustyFN. Love your creativity and out of the box, er bowl thinking. Amazing piece of walnut.
March 5, 20242 yr Popular Post This is from a black locust that had been cut down some years ago. The bowl is 8" and weighs 1.1 lbs. The large hole on the outside doesn't go all the way through.
