Looks like southern PA was once again spared the "big one" as far as snow is concerned. Still mighty cold out, however. Our Patriot Turners- Member @Gordon posted a question about using dyes on a turning. Specifically. he was asking about bleed through. Several of our turners posted their thoughts and advice. If you’re going to be successful, you need to try more than once and usually fail more than once. If you never try, you will never fail. You will also never accomplish anything. Fear Of Failure Can Paralyze You Go ahead and try that new project or method. You will probably fail the first time or two. That is how we learn. Persistence is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. As someone who has been given a certain responsibility and a pretty broad platform to shout from, I have come to realize that no matter what I do or say, someone is going to be offended. I could avoid negative comments by never saying or trying anything, but although I have the right to remain silent, I do not have the ability. For every 100 encouraging and uplifting comments I receive on this weekly column, I will receive one that is less encouraging. These comments provide opportunities to practice what I preach. Some comments are very harsh simply because they disagree with something I’ve said or implied or because I believe differently from them. “Don’t throw them away” was the advice recently given to me by a good friend. When people say something nonsensical, you can only control how you respond. I’ve heard it said the greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. Nobody will agree 100 percent of the time, and in the wood-turning world, there are almost always many ways to accomplish the same thing. I choose to practice what I preach, especially when responding to someone who disagrees with me. As you evaluate someone else, realize they might see things from a perspective different than your own. That doesn’t make them wrong; it makes them different from you. Safe turning

Ron Brown's latest newsletter may provide some. Turning Wood Is Like An All-You-Can-Eat Buffet There is a seemingly endless variety to choose from. Some you know instantly you want, some quite the opposite. There are others you might want to sample first before digging in. There is something for everyone’s taste in the world of woodturning. General Categories: Dried wood, wet/green wood, branch wood, wood from trees brought down by storms, projects using glued segments, wood suitable for spindles (grain runs parallel to the lathe bed), bowl orientation (grain is perpendicular to the lathe bed), hybrid wood and resin, structural projects (columns, posts, balusters, etc.), furniture parts (legs, stretchers, stool seats, etc.), projects using kits (pens, seam rippers, bottle stoppers, pepper mills, etc.) Within each general category, there are several sub-categories. Most folks never venture beyond 3 or 4; a few will try 5 to 7, then usually return to the category they are most comfortable with and know the most about. Here are a few items for your consideration: Bowls, vases, platters, goblets, pepper mills, candle holders, pens, bottle stoppers, Christmas ornaments, spindles, rolling pins, tool handles, jewelry boxes, decorative eggs, mortar and pestle, egg cups, honey dippers, spurtles, garden dibbers, mushrooms, finials, drawer pulls, bracelets, desk organizers, cake stands, salt cellars, lazy susans, mallets, yo-yos, coasters, napkin rings, birdhouses, chess pieces, plant stands, picture frames, serving spoons, tealight holders, fruit bowls, urns, platters with inlays, sculptures, toys, tea kettles, coffee scoops, trays, jewelry trees, herb grinders, clocks, letter openers, spinning tops, furniture legs, balusters, posts and columns, segmented urns, vases, basket weave illusion plates, vases, and bowls. Cindy Drozda's Tool Talk this Friday Cindy and Todd Raines Zoom Sharing Meeting- For The Newbies- When it comes to bowl turning, the grinds on a bowl gouge can be confusing. Which one is best? Which one should I use and where? Sam Angelo has some information that may help you answer these questions- Turning a bowl, box or any hollow type form requires the turner to know just how deep into the wood they can go before making the inside larger than the outside. Richard Raffan shows us how to make a simple tool to help with judging the depth. When hollowing out turnings with straight sides (i.g. boxes), the box scraper can help to make more precise cuts. Can you believe it, school is starting this week!!! I don't think I'll miss substituting. Our Patriot Turners- Our sponsors Laguna and Easy Wood Tools are awesome. One of these days, I'm gonna surprise you all and actually do some turning. But in the meantime let's not forget our pledge to make our "adopted" family's Christmas the best ever- Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker added more birdhouse ornaments to the bunch he already completed. I think he must be staying up nights! Steve shows us some of the fantastic details on these, in his post- @HandyDan cranked out a slew of awesome looking Awls. As always, Dan provides detailed descriptions of his process. He also gives us a look at one of the "New Turning Items" we mentioned sometime back. @kmealy was inspired to turn some Christmas trees after seeing what the asking price was at a Craft store. Judging from what he saw, there's money to be made with lathe turnings! Check out Keith's post! @RustyFN is having fun turning lidded vessels. These can be turned from just about any wood- even glued up scraps- Please see his post and read all of the nice comments from our turners. Sometime back, we were discussing casting acrylic blanks. The conversation included inquiries about pressure pots. Rusty was kind enough to share his pressure pot build information along with some pictures.
