Our Christmas Project is underway. Help us to make a military family's Christmas one to remember! Check out all the awesome prizes and details here- https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/topic/42294-adopt-a-warrior-family-for-christmas-2025/ Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker is putting his new laser to good use creating unique Christmas ornaments! Check out these two post from Steve to learn more about how these are done Unfortunately, there was a "catch" during the turning process as Steve explains here- A couple of weeks ago we had a post asking our preference for either a Longworth chuck or vacuum chuck. There have been a few additional comments. The post picks up here- From @Gordon on our "Off The Lathe" topic, a gorgeous natural edge bowl in a board type turning. Check out the comments and catch with some of the other comments on past posts. @RustyFN scored some awesome maple! Preparing the blanks for storage kept him busy!! Head on over to Rusty's post to see the rest of the blanks!! New member, @Rusty S, shared a heart breaking incident with a walnut turning he had "almost" finished. In his post, he explains what happened and received lots of sympathy from those of us in the "BTDT Club" What's Coming Up- If you missed the Fall Vendor Showcase, it is available on YouTube. Unfortunately, the link won't embed the video but clicking the link will take to YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKJVVo-vrKA Cindy Drozda will be hosting here Tool Talk on Friday November21, 2025 Here's the link for registration- https://streamyard.com/watch/nFhunNEiiBP6 Cindy also has some of her previous IRD's available for rent. This trailer is for her Gilded Sphere Box- The link for renting the IRD video- https://www.cindydrozda.com/html/IRDvideo4rent.html For The Newbies- Turning tools are expensive. Some manufacturers sell the tools without handles, which reduces the costs. Tools with round shafts are fairly simple to create handles by drilling the correct size hole. But, what about the tools with square shafts? Sam Angelo has a solution- Looking for a project that can help you advance your skills and learn a few new ones? Check out this ornaments from Carl Jacobson. Using a jam chuck can solve a lot of "How do I hold this piece". Richard Raffan demonstrated using this type of chuck for bowl/lid turning Expand Your Horizons- Add a little custom bling to your life with turned ring! Mike peace show how it's done. You know if Alan Stratton is going to share a video it will have some cool jigs involved! This one is no exception! I've been known for doing some crazy glue-ups on some of my turnings, but this one is insane! Roger Wollam demonstrates Tangential segment turning. Tim Yoder demonstrates how to create and finish captive rings- Tomislav Tomasic may have you rethinking how you create your tenons on those turning blanks Turning Time With Easy Wood Tools- If you haven't seen it yet, check out the unique Easy Wood Tools, midsized rougher created specifically for The Patriot Woodworker Christmas project- To paraphrase a well known person- "Bid Baby Bid" We find Easy Wood Tools turning all sorts of materials. Deadrise Wood Crafts turns some leather pens with the EWT Finisher- AQMmv-7pm-VQD3_r469MQFle62m0SG9I0ceXBA7FbygjjqzzYYdCwNFT_dWRub7Igo02bz1e-fSnigagyR6yTpQPLFF9Ah05ZHK--oE.mp4 Demonstrations for next week- Come burn off some of those turkey and pumpkin pie calories by checking out this demo- https://www.woodcraft.com/pages/store/oklahoma-city @Jordan Martindale New Turning Items- These are not new items but they are from a fairly new company. This is another review of the CBN wheels from the Ukraine company https://www.uksg.tools/ Everything Else- Want to thank @kmealy for sending me this YouTube video from Stumpy Nubs. Keith knows I love Celtic Knot patterns. Stumpy's video shows an easier way to glue up a Celtic Knot rolling pin. It's pretty cool and his diagonal cutting jig is really easy to make/use. The only thing I would caution on is to NOT cut the square blank completely through. By separating the blank and gluing the insert will cause the overall blank to "grow' in length on each successive rotation. this will cause the "knots" to be out of alignment. Here's the video- Safe turning

Mikes Peace turns a lidded box from Holly New Turning Items- Mike Peace also reviews a new chuck from Record Power. Everything Else- Looking for turning ideas? Ron Brown's latest newsletter may provide some. Turning Wood Is Like An All-You-Can-Eat Buffet There is a seemingly endless variety to choose from. Some you know instantly you want, some quite the opposite. There are others you might want to sample first before digging in. There is something for everyone’s taste in the world of woodturning. General Categories: Dried wood, wet/green wood, branch wood, wood from trees brought down by storms, projects using glued segments, wood suitable for spindles (grain runs parallel to the lathe bed), bowl orientation (grain is perpendicular to the lathe bed), hybrid wood and resin, structural projects (columns, posts, balusters, etc.), furniture parts (legs, stretchers, stool seats, etc.), projects using kits (pens, seam rippers, bottle stoppers, pepper mills, etc.) Within each general category, there are several sub-categories. Most folks never venture beyond 3 or 4; a few will try 5 to 7, then usually return to the category they are most comfortable with and know the most about. Here are a few items for your consideration: Bowls, vases, platters, goblets, pepper mills, candle holders, pens, bottle stoppers, Christmas ornaments, spindles, rolling pins, tool handles, jewelry boxes, decorative eggs, mortar and pestle, egg cups, honey dippers, spurtles, garden dibbers, mushrooms, finials, drawer pulls, bracelets, desk organizers, cake stands, salt cellars, lazy susans, mallets, yo-yos, coasters, napkin rings, birdhouses, chess pieces, plant stands, picture frames, serving spoons, tealight holders, fruit bowls, urns, platters with inlays, sculptures, toys, tea kettles, coffee scoops, trays, jewelry trees, herb grinders, clocks, letter openers, spinning tops, furniture legs, balusters, posts and columns, segmented urns, vases, basket weave illusion plates, vases, and bowls. That should get you started. Safe turning

Middle of July, almost, and it feels like summer here in south central PA. Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber showed us a beautiful bowl made from Pyinma. In his post he tells us more about the species and the purpose of this little bowl. Forty is also working on his stash of pecan. Really gorgeous bread platter- Here's his post along with a bunch of great comments- And speaking of pecan platters, @Gerald is putting the finishing touches on one he started several years ago. Gerald answers questions on this one in his post- A platter wasn't the only thing Gerald was turning. He was successful in turning a circular form, that when cut apart, created a specific silhouette. I wonder what other designs could be made. Gerald's post- "What's On Your Lathe" had a little action this week. Both @Gerald, @nevinc and @teesquare posted their turnings! See all the images and more information at- What’s Coming Up- The AAW has a multi-part informative tutorial on doing demonstrations. You need to be a member of the AAW to take advantage of these lessons. Log into their site using your credentials to learn more. If you missed Cindy Drozda's tool talk last week, here is a replay- https://streamyard.com/watch/p2Dx5CgdwBbq From Todd Raines- https://streamyard.com/watch/D83QTW86cQcx?receiptful=64af360be3d57500388bb7b5&utm_source=CM Commerce&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter-261&utm_term=newsletter&utm_content=other&receiptfultype=newsletter For The Newbies- Alan Stratton shows us an inexpensive safety device to protect your fingers and knuckles when using a chuck- As an aside, the Easy Chuck was designed to reduce finger/knuckle scrapes. We've all heard the term "ride the bevel" but unless someone has actually shown you how, most description leave a lot to be desire. In steps Tim Yoder and as usual makes thing much easier to understand. Tim also gave us a lesson on how importance lighting while turning- Mike Peace turns a small, lidded box. Notice his use of shop made chucks and that, even for experienced turners, things don't always go as planned Still learning sharpening techniques? Richard Raffan has some help with your bowl gouge- Kent Weakley demonstrates just how much weight is lost when turning a bowl. I think this makes a good case for a bowl saver tool! Some good turning tips throughout- Expand Your Horizons- We've all been told DO NOT DO THIS! His spindle gouge has a really beefy tang. Richard also reviews the "burned" turning from last week- Carl Jacobson turns an apple wood burl vase- New Turning Items- Cindy Drozda's tool talk (above) demonstrated the use of the new Stuart Batty sharpening platform. Cindy sells these on her site- Check Cindy's site- http://www.cindydrozda.com/html/SBTplatforms.html Woodturners Wonders has a sale on lathe lights- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/lamps?_kx=gV5SF2As_3IwtBi5TrpHVQM0F3UvGVbQKzhWGippDlk%3D.VJvU8R Don't drool on the keyboard, but Mike Peace got himself a new lathe- Everything Else- Tim Yoder continues to experiment with his new laser- From Ron Brown's newsletter- One Universal Secret All Successful People Share When successful people try and fail, they understand that failure is part of the process that eventually leads to victory. Almost no one succeeds the first time they try. When you learned to ride a bicycle, you fell. You got up and tried again, and again. You eventually learned how to ride a bicycle successfully. The first several dozen times I tried to make elegant finials for my turned-lidded boxes and fancy Christmas Ornaments, they broke or looked like I turned them with a hammer. But eventually, I figured it out. Now I can turn a fancy finial that approaches a Cindy Drozda class finial out of ebony or African Blackwood without worrying that it will fly into a million pieces before I’m done. That skill level took many failures before I was able to call myself a successful fancy finial turner. You can do it too. It just takes practice and experience. If you are willing to practice, nothing is beyond your reach. I’m encouraging you to pick yourself up and try again. Success will come if you don’t quit. I must be an inventor at heart because I love figuring out ways to solve common problems for woodturners. As a long-time woodturner, myself, I share the same difficulties and frustrations you do. I’ve taken those challenges as my personal mission to invent unique solutions that make tasks easier, safer, and quicker. Safe turning
