Can you believe it? Tomorrow is the first day of October!

One of own, @Charles Nicholls, could use some prayers and good thoughts. Charles is in the hospital and hopefully recovering but if you could take a moment and send some positive energy his way, I'm sure it will be appreciated. A little more information is here-

EDIT EDIT EDIT--- Just received word that Charles has been moved from the hospital to a rehab facility. Things are looking up!

Our Patriot Turners-

Last week @Masonsailor showed us his beginning Christmas present project. He has added even more to that post-

@AndrewB must sleep by his lathe ;). He has completed several projects this past week. First up are a couple of maple bowls-

His post explains what he did-

Next, he used up some of his scraps and turned a small bowl-

Andrew used some of his poplar to turn a couple of bowls. Notice his skill level improves with each project. Check out the wall thickness on these -

The astute observer will see that Andrew's lathe went from Wen orange to Harbor Freight green. His Wen lathe was having some issues with losing power and erratic speed control-

His HF lathe uses a Reeves drive speed adjustment and doesn't slow down much below 600 rpm's. Andrew experiment with a speed controller but experienced some difficulties. Thank goodness @Larry Buskirk, was around and helped him determine what was happening and why.

What’s Coming Up-

If this pandemic has had a positive side, it's that woodturners all over the world are turning to virtual demonstrations. Those of us who cannot afford to travel can still learn from their teachings.

If your woodturning club is looking for this type of event, Glenn Lucas is offering large group/club instruction.

For The Newbies-

Getting the smoothest possible finish, directly from your tools, will reduce sanding time and expense. There are a couple of techniques, using traditional tools, that can really help. Lyle Jamieson demonstrates the "push" and the "pull" cuts

Finally, here is an unedited Q & A video from Mike Waldt where he answers some questions about how to hold your work on the lathe-

Expand Your Horizons-

Really nice, short video from Alumilite explaining the Science Behind Resin: Epoxy vs Polyurethane-

Looking to create that one of a kind turning that no one will believe came from a lathe? There is a product called "compressed wood" and it can free your imagination. This article is from is from the AAW

Last week we saw a video for turning a "square" bowl. Here, Mike Peace turns a "three corner bowl"

New Turning Items-

Getting the consistent grind on your gouges can be frustrating. Ron Brown has come up with a set up block to help make repeatable grinds-

Our most generous sponsor, Easy Wood Tools, shared a video from Tracey Malady. She demonstrates the EWT mini hollowers. Thanks @Jim from Easy Wood Tools!

Safe turning and stay well

That came out beautiful @lew

Great post lots of videos to look at this week.

Thanks Lew.  Love the rocking horse.  Mimi added a nice touch to the project.

Great gift there Lew. Lots going on this week.

Nice post @lew just now playing catch up.  Got even more projects on the way just placed an order with cook woods got a couple purple heart blanks a myrtle and a maple blank coming in.  So should be quite busy soon.  Even had to order a new roughing cutter and hollowing cutter tip.

Yes indeed.  When he does get to feeling better and gets motivated for shop time I sent him 14 blanks for wine stoppers.  He can focus on the fun part, turning on the lathe.

Thanks, @lew.  Some really good videos.  Will have to wait for a rainy day to watch Paul.  That is a 2 hour video.  Wow!

Also, thank you for updating us regarding Charles.  And, that rocky horse is awesome.  I want one for when I go to the assisted living.  LOL

@Gunny Thank You! Thanks for sending stuff to Charles, also. I sent you a PM.

@HandyDan Thanks!

@Gerald Thank You!

@AndrewB Thanks! Hope the cutters arrive soon!

@p_toad Thank You! I hope his rehab stay is a short one.

@FlGatorwood Thanks! I sorta, fast forwarded thru some of that longer one. The beginning had more about the way to hold work.

Thanks to all  who have expressed concern for @Charles Nicholls. Hopefully his rehab stay will be short and he'll be back to turning soon.

@lew Just got an email from EWT should arrive in about 3 days I'll have bowl blanks tomorrow lol.  I said Id never order another Padauk blank again welp I ordered another one LOL.  I dunno I just seem to like the orange tint color to the wood.  Ah yea the one thing I did learn from EWT they do offer a 10 PERCENT Military / Veteran Discount.  How ever you can't get that discount ordering online you have to physically call Easy Wood Tools to receive that discount on items.   Just some FYI.

Thanks for that information! I'll include it in next week's "Wednesday's..."

Dont quote me exactly on the Full 10 percent that's what I think it is but I would just double check with @Jim from Easy Wood Tools on that one.  But its always worth to call into EWT to make an order.

Yes - EWT does offer a 10% discount to Active Duty / Veterans and First Responders.  Not a special offer, everyday.

Thanks

Thanks for clarifying that @Jim from Easy Wood Tools
