not reading the instructions

Knowing your equipment is as important as the skill to turn, in fact they go hand in hand.   Spend, some time just going over the machine itself.  No turning, examine every nut, bolt lever and button.

I should have just bought one of those to start with.

I disagree, I know too many guys that turn with cheap lathes and produce some beautiful stuff.  They know the machine they work with, and its limitations as well as capabilities.    Have turned in Iraq using a cordless drill and a bearing welded to a frame.  We had need of certain things we did not have available so we made do with what we had.

@AndrewB Thanks! I think everyone agrees that both carbide and HSS have their place and use in turning. Check this website for an angled drill.

@Gunny Thank You! That's true about the cup turner. I was thinking with a little creativity it could probably be adapted to do the inside, too. Thanks, also, for the input on the importance of knowing the ins, outs and capabilities of your equipment.

@Gerald Thanks! I do get a lot of notices about woodturning. That really helps finding stuff to post. I just hope it is useful. I like your idea about the sanding posts. How do you think that should be done?

@FlGatorwood Thank you! Thanks for the heads-up on the pen sale. Great prices!

@Jim from Easy Wood Tools Thanks!!! I'll have to remember that hashtag!

@HandyDan Thank You!

@Larry Buskirk Thanks!

That's definitely going on the shopping list thanks @lew

@lew What I was thinking is we could each explain our approach to sanding. Maybe photos of equipment used and reasons for using that particular item. I will try to put something together tomorrow if I can. Of Coarse the idea is for everyone to share and remember this is just to describe your approach and maybe make suggestions if someone is way off base.
