@Ron Altier created a spectacular ornament from some glued-up scraps. It is amazing how shapes can appear in lathe turnings.

 

 

 

@AndrewB must sleep in his shop! He has been working on a couple of projects this week and you can really see how he is improving his techniques and expanding his horizons!

Then he received a larger piece of purpleheart and created this beauty-

Expand Your Horizons-

Usually the emails from Cooks Woods are about their lumber for sales. This week a different content caught my eye. Included was a link to making a Pepper Grinder. The process does require a few precise forstner but they make wonderful gifts. What I found interesting about this particular presentation was the outside was done first and then the holes were drilled.

 

 

A day or so later I found another video on pepper mills but with a completely different shape-

Last week I mentioned that I had turned some cherry forms and they were soaking in a soap/water solution. After a couple of days, I pulled them out-

 

 

Packed them in shavings

 

Then put them in paper bags with more shavings

 

They rest for a while- probably a week- and then the final turning/finishing.

 

The other cherry is waiting for turning. One piece got rough turned into a bowl-

 

 

Right now, it is soaking in the solution.

Lew thanks for the post. Been a full week. Been so busy I did not get back to you that my friend sold the tools to someone driving up from Florida. He may sell some more as he never turns now. Hey if we can keep Andrew going he may have a full shop of tools and actually be great at using them.

 

I have been experimenting with turning to completion and have done several in live oak and two in cherry so we will see where this is going.

I'm contemplating on picking up some cherry myself.  Quick edit @lew I'll have to watch some of the videos at some point tomorrow.  Its a bit late at the moment.

Thank you, @Lew.  This is a very packed post.  Wow!  Has this group been busy.  Also I really appreciate the links to buffing pads and super glue. I have used super glue to finish pens and I can tell you not to use latex gloves.  Unless you wish them melted to the fabric of your skin.  I do not like wearing gloves around the lathe.  And, I immensely enjoyed the turnings and I always enjoy the Charles Brock shows.  I get those emails and then just sit and drool.  Also, very interesting turning on pepper mills.  

 

Andrew, please keep it up.  It is good to see this activity.  And, your learning is teaching the rest of us what we may have forgotten or not experienced.  Thank you.  

 

And, thank you for the experienced turners stepping in and teaching us.  Now, if we can only remember it while we make our way to our shops.  

Busy week indeed.  While I did not turn this week I sure feel the vibe with all @AndrewB 's post.  Managed to get a glue up started for a holder for my glasses on my lazy susan at the table.  Be a few days before I get back to it.  Working on making a sheet metal bender.

Thanks Lew.  Tracy's video on mini hollowing really caught my eye.  The dark brown CA may come in handy too.  All in all a great post as usual. 

...Nice to see that someone is bringing back some of the old style attachments.

I've got both a Delta 1/2" straight bore, and 1" X 8 TPI that are probably older than me. 

I know the 1/2" straight bore is, it was made for the Delta 9" lathe from the 30's.

...I forgot the photos,... no photos didn't happen! 

 

@Gerald Thank You! My downfall with turning to completion is the sanding. It really seems to eat up sand paper quickly- even using open weave products.

The 1/2" bore one I got in a box of parts that came with the fence parts for a Delta 458 mortiser.

Both the 9" lathe and the mortiser could use the same attachments.

I've never been lucky enough to snag a 458, but if I do I've got most of the accessory attachments.

 

Delta also offered a grinding-buffing arbor in both a MT2, and 1" X 8 TPI Left Hand thread for the outboard side.

Nice I have 2 myrtle wood and a maple blanks on the way.  Cook woods for me is going to be the least expensive in the long run and the way to go.

i appreciate your use of your forms layout rule.   i must have a half-dozen of those around here somewhere (steel and plastic) from way too many years in IT. 

@AndrewB Cooks Woods should be pretty reasonable for shipping, being relatively close.

 

@p_toad Thanks! That was given to me by my next door neighbor- long since passed- he worked in data processing at the local Army depot when data processing was in its infancy- those old punch cards and readers.

@lew  Yea they are VERY reasonable, I just ordered 3 blanks the other day for about 49 bucks that's including the shipping.  Not to mention Kalamath is only like 5 hours from me so it gets here really quick once its shipped, which is really nice.  The problem I have with Rockler is the selection, there isn't a great deal of selection with turning blanks for bowls on that website.  I looked into some of the other suppliers in the midwest and east coast but the shipping time.  I'm not a very patient person when it comes to certain things.

It is a work in progress.  Yes, it worked for the project intended.  No, it is not up to the task for other work.    More R&D is needed.

I meant to make another comment about Ron's turning.  I love the elongation of the wood at certain curves and it really messes with your eyesight.  That is really a neat turning project and I like it very much.  

 

Lew, your bowls, one appears a bit shiny and the other a bit moldy.  Am I seeing correctly.  And, how to you determine when they are dry enough for final turning?  These are awesome bowls.  

Andrew, I only buy wood at a sawmill or local woodmizer user or at a symposium. Therefore I may not be the best at doing online shopping on this but I may have a way for you to get a break. Some of our club members have bought from this lady and I have meet her. From what they have bought good prices but that was dropped off at the club by Mark Sillay. Her name is Elizabeth Ross and the business is on facebook.

@FlGatorwood those pictures were taken immediately after the pieces were pulled from the soap solution. They were dripping wet. 

I’ll let them set in the shavings for a while- maybe a couple of weeks. I have turned smaller items immediately from the soak just dried them off first. 

Just put another one in the solution today. Still have a few more chunks of cherry rough out

Agreed about the local purchases, @Gerald. Make friends with a local tree service, give them a couple of turnings as gifts and they will often reciprocate with free wood! The guys we have used, over the years, even told me to come to their dumping area and get all I want!
