Check the free adds on your local Craigs-List.

There's always someone giving away free firewood in my area.

Like Larry said look at the ads. Sometimes these folks will drop at your doorstep as there are some who do not have a place to dump wood without paying a fee and if dropped at you no fee or less fee.

 

Also some cities have urban wood recycling programs. Check the city landfill. I found some when I was in Missouri that way.

 

One more thing is to cruise the streets especially after a storm passes. There will be lots around to pick from on the curbs.
