steven newman
Went to the shop, to check on the glue up....wasn't happy with it....one panel was out of square, and 1/8-1/4" too wide.....remove the stile, got the offending panel fixed. Re-installed everything, and re-glued the stile into place. Two pipe clamps to hold things tight, until tomorrow. Got one of the end panels out of the clamps....was only one still on it, anyway. It needed squared, imagine that....and needed flattened due to...another too thick panel. Got it almost level with the other half of the panel. Then started to bevel one edge.....got it done, done I was too tired to do any more. p_toad, Grandpadave52 and HARO50
steven newman
Took the camera back to the shop.... After the repair, only needed two clamps. One of the end panels only had a single clamp on it, might as well put it on the bench.. That old square showed the panel was out a bit...and not parallel on the ends....Bandsaw to correct. New jig was cobbled up, and the planes rounded up.. The #5c was for hogging off most of the waste, and getting the panel flat..... the #4c worked mainly on the bevel.. With the #4 smoothy to fine tune things. Got things close, then flip the panel over.. To give it a back bevel. I also ran the plane over the field of the panel....then a test fit.. Will fine tune the fit. Rotate the panel around, and repeat.....until the shoulders say STOP! Then haul the laundry upstairs, and close the shop... Stay tuned... Fred W. Popular Post steven newman
Today was a bit better......got the panel all nicely raised... Will be sanded smooth later... Made four stiles. Cut to length to match the existing ones. Ripped to just over 1" wide. Traced the outline of the existing feet, and bandsawed them out.. More sanding, ganged all four together, and planed the saw marks off... Used these and the raised panel, to set how wide to make the rails....and how long.. Which meant I needed four blanks cut to length.... Seems to have been a "Cardio" day...cut these on the Mtre box, like all the rest of the smaller parts.. Used up the remaining 1 x 4 Maple plank....had one 4 x 4 square left... Needed to set up the resaw jig for a wider width.. Soon had all four ripped to width, and the edges planed to remove saw marks....which meant I needed grooves milled....how to do those? We have ways...Had to build a jig, again ( scrap been supplies my jig parts) Notched part is screwed to the vise. Jig is tightened up, then an extra screw added to keep things in place... Set the depth a hair deeper this time around. Had to get out a "new" candle, old one was worn out. tried something else "new", as well.. I used the block plane to add a small bevel on the corners of the grooves. Seems to help the panel sit in the groove a bit better.. Which left thestiles to be grooved. Needed to "adjust" the jig, so the fence would clear it.. There is also a screw that holds the "foot" in place. Outside jig just barely clears the bottom of the fence, and still able to hold the part...Finally, got the grooves done... Enough for both end panels. I even got panel #2 out of the clamps, and trimmed up.. I get the feeling this will be a real joy to raise......Decided to mill the tenons up... Laid them out ( but was only going to do a set of two rails.) and made the shoulder cuts with the mitre saw... Bandsaw to make the cheek cuts. Then got out the mortise jig, and reset it for 3/4" thick rails... May be able to make some use of the backsaw? Just an old Disston No. 4.....had to keep sweeping the floor.. That Stanley #45 was making a lot of "Crunchies" that got to be hard on the feet...MY feet. IF I get motivated....I MIGHT try to chop a few mortises. and get at least one end panel glued up.....maybe after Supper? Stay tuned...I might actually get something done, today.... lew, Grandpadave52, HARO50 and 3 others
lew
You make me tired just watching! Had to walk up and out of the shop. Got all the dovetails fitted and the top and bottom of the little box mostly ready. Need a little more finessing. Now I have to figure out how to get the dry fit back apart! steven newman, Grandpadave52 and p_toad
steven newman
Snuck back down to the shop.....chopped four mortises. Tenons were about 1/8" too long, mitre saw to adjust. End panel #1 is now sitting in the clamps..all glued up. Maybe Tuesday, I can get #2 glued up? HARO50, p_toad, Fred W. Reset a jig... And gave it a test run.....have the "other" plane ready to go, as well.. Maybe I could use a couple from the "Ready Rack"? Maybe....Tuesday? Called it a day....being Monday.... Popular Post steven newman
Ok, had one last panel to get "raised" Stanley Made in England No.4 c..to "hog off" most of the waste... Until these lines are gone..then the "other" Stanley No.4 took over.. Until I got a almost close fit.....then flip over and do a back bevel.. Until the groove fits. Had to do this all the way around the panel.....fine tuning as I went. Finally was able to smooth plane the "field" of the panel... Dang little Pin Knots were a bit nasty to plane. Set this aside, milled the four tenons, chopped the four mortises.... Spread a bit of glue, added four clamps.. @ 1430 hrs, ZULU, the last of the chest's sides was clamped up. I get to take a break for the rest of the day? Stay tuned.... lew, Grandpadave52, p_toad and 2 others

steven newman
Went back to the shop, to do a dry fit of sorts... No glue. The end in the back? Is in bass-ackwards. Panel is facing the wrong way. Raised panel is facing the inside. Will turn it around during assembly....( I hope..) Thinking of doing that T&G corner joint, again. More to align the parts, as I hate when they go squirrelly on me. Need to reset the Stanley #45 with a match cutter... Stay tuned p_toad, HARO50 and Cal

COPD was kicking my rearend something fierce, today. haul a few loads ( SMALL ) of shavings up to the fire pit...and burned a stack of empty boxes....not much else got done. Express Scripts wanted $20 to ship an inhaler to me. Also set up an appointment to see a Lung Doctor. Popular Post steven newman
Took a day off....was getting a bit bored....decided to SLOWLY do a small bit in the shop, and limit the trips on them stairs... Now I remember why that shelf sticks out that way....I checked the edge for square.. Not...but, we have ways,, Millers Falls #14 Jack plane...lots lighter than them BIG jointer planes... I was going to use this cutter.. To mill a 3/16" tongue on the freshly jointed edge....board was a tad too wide...would have left a whisker on the edges....I do have a wider one... Meet it's big brother..a 1/4" tongue cutter. At least it will reach all the way across the edge.. And still have the skates riding on the wood. Less tipping, that way... Once I figured out which way the grain was really running, I could start at the far end.. And work my way back towards the other end. Helps the rub the candle around a bit, too.. Since the cutter has it's own depth stop, just a matter of going until it stops cutting. Since these are going into stopped grooves, I needed to trim the ends a bit.. Saw to cut, chisel to remove. Got all the end panels' edges done...laid one of the front/back panels on the bench....needed to set up a contraption.. Has a 1/4" straight cutting bit...one of four such bits I have...I marked the stop and start lines....and had to figure out which to actually start from....once that was figured out.. So far so good, right? Normal luck in this shop...got about an inch into the next groove's cut.. Hate when that happens....got the next bit loaded up and set, and cut some more.. Then got the other two grooves cut. Was doing test fits along the way, too.. Hmmm, might as well spread the Elmer's around, and use a few clamps.. Diagonal clamp to pull this into square.....tape measure to check the diagonals, both said 35", exactly. Will let this sit til tomorrow. Then decide what next to cobble up for it. Stay tuned....I am sitting here, pulling dried glue off my fingers....and having a Mountain Dew......and will just sit for a while... Glad to know you're feeling better...Not a bad days work IMO.. I'm not pulling glue off, but do have a fountain MD (custom blend 1/2 diet 1/2 straight) I picked up at the convenience mart after ordering parts at the John Deere store. Getting ready to fire up the little welder and try to fabricate a better part from old parts til the new pieces parts arrive...or I may join you and just sit a while too p_toad, steven newman, HARO50 and 1 other
steven newman
Went and removed the clamps a little while ago.....a few creaks...both from the case, and from me... Diagonal clamp actually pulled the case just past "square".......so when it came off, the case sprang back a bit..right into Square. Lots of squeeze-outs to remove.....chisel for that. couple "high" spots, as well....few swipes with a No.4 plane took care of that. Now sitting on it's own four feet, on the floor. Will let it set overnight. Stay tuned....I may have found a speed slower than smell.... Cal, HARO50, p_toad and 1 other
steven newman
Our little 3 month old pup got sick....and died before we could get her to the vet.......been a downer two days.... Glued in a frame for the case's bottom.. Got the feet trimmed to match each other.. Used a chisel and some sanding. Panel for the bottom was cut to size.. Took a few tries....then glue and screws.....was having a bad day, anyway.. Took a trip to Menard's last night....needed a maple 1 x4.....( $11.95 !) and picked a sand-pack.. Hey, for $5, I can find some use for these...cut a 31" long chunk of the Hard Maple 1 x 4 and added it to the edge of the blank for the lid... This afternoon, after a few Honey-do items, I got the clamps off for a test fit.. Too long, and too wide, now....we can fix that.. Framer square to mark a line. saw to trim the excess off....both ends. Wasn't in the mood to take things slow... First trim for width...wasn't quite right....measured from the backside, and then used a straight edge to mark a correct line. Board was wider at one end than the other...fixed that, too...more corded stuff.. That be a dovetail bit in a router table...nasty, messy, disturbers of the peace & quiet thing. It needed to do four passes.. Needed two of these. Then the bit was needed elsewhere, so...time to "Move it, move it" Took a couple tries to set that fence in the center of a board's edge...first time was off center...saw that mistake off, and set the fence again.... Clamped some scrap on the backside, to help support the fat...er. wide base of the router. This is the test fit. A few drops of glue into the socket..and slide the breadboard ends into place..got both ends done.. The ends of the bread boards will need trimmed for length.....may do a radius on the corners... Will see how this all looks, after a day of sanding....needed to clean me and the floor up.. As we were both about as dusty....camera battery was needing recharged...time to stop for the day... Stay tuned... lew, p_toad, Cal and 1 other 2
