Sorry to hear about the pup. I know how you feel.

Got bored tonight.....battery for the camera was charged up...meandered down to the shop...

 

A pint can of varnish....served as the "template" to curve the ends of the lid..

Bandsaw to make the cuts....

Had a lot of un-evenness  where the boards met.....needed to flatten the lid...we have ways...

When I set it on the bench, it wanted to rock a bit.....clamped it down, and got out the cambered jack plane..

Mainly to bring all the high spots down to almost the low spots.   Some along the edges needed a bit more work..

Older panel was a tad thicker, than the new stuff.....and had cupped a bit.    Jack plane took out the cup,   and leveled the high spots...

Finished smoothing things out with a no.4 plane.  Got both faces done, and all along the edges.     Sander to remove the saw marks on the curved parts..

Sat it back on the case, to see how it looks....I still need to finish sand the case.    Not sure about that little box on the inside...yet.  

Should be interesting when the shellac finally goes on?

That's heartbreaking news about the pup.....really hurts to hear such things.

Little Miss was laid to rest this afternoon.   Have a Momma Cat deliver four kittiens this morning.....hope they last a little longer...

 

Ok, how about a PIP of this Blanket Chest?     I got things smoothed out, sharp corners rounded off with hand tools and a sander...No router needed..

 

Applied a single coat of amber shellac..

Kind of hard to get a good picture..

A little better view of the "front"....

One of the ends.   Spokeshave to round some of the square edges.  

And a view of the lid.     Still need to attach the hinges.   That is usually an adventure.....Maybe a couple more coats, before the clear gloss goes on?

First, very sorry about the loss of your puppy...heart to you all...

New kittens are always fun and entertaining

The blanket chest turned out awesome...such a classic design that will endure the ages; as always, enjoyed following the project along.

That shellac really makes that maple grain show up. Nice looking chest, Steve. Awesome work.

Well, today, I cleared the bench off of most of the tools....as for putting the hinges ON the chest?

Needed to make one more of that skinny board.   As for the larger one..

Needed to cut it and that  wide slab of Poplar to something I could use...placed the board on the bench..

Used the Disston D-8 tocut things down to size.   I needed to rip a "rail" out of the 1 x 4 Maple..

The old rip fence works great at RIP cuts.....suck doing resaw stuff.    Can't get the drift set right.....Set the rail over with the first one.  Somehow managed to resaw the 1 x 3 into a 3/8" x 3" slab.     Figured I would plane both halves into 1/2" thick.     Needed crosscut to length....and square on the ends...

Just the tool for the job..  Planed and sanded the saw marks and other nasty stuff off the parts...

At least after this was taken.....Maple looked better, Poplar's turn...

One edge was 3/8" thick, the other was 1/2" thick....and a slight cup going on...Cambered Jack plane to level the board, on both faces...

Then the #4 was brought backout..

Turned the poplar nice and smooth, and shiny.    Made a mess on the floor, though..

I finally remembered to turn the fan on..about this time....

So, what have I got?

besides a messy shop....well this will be a tray that will sit on the rails inside the chest.   Will be able to slide it from one end to the other.   I may put a center divider, to maybe act as a handle to lift the tray out?    First off, I need to do some joinery work.....these are just sitting here, no glue and no fasteners yet.   Maybe some smallish dovetails?    A rebate  around the edges of the bottom?    Tray will ride just under the lid.

Between the Rust Hunting, and a lack of sleep....did not try to do any woodworking today.....2 hours of sleep,  too tired to play with sharp objects....

 

Items have been cleaned and stowed away...will try to get a few things done, tomorrow, after the Doctor's visit.....

Like the added touch of adding a movable tray in the chest.

Two out of three spots were.."ok"...third spot had a biopsy taken.....will know more about that, in two weeks....

I have a question for Steve.  On the top with the bread board ends (very nice looking btw) did they have grooves and the boards toungs?

If not how did your join them?

Michael, Not sure how Steven is feeling at the moment. I'm sure he will fill in the details and blanks soon, but in the mean time, maybe this will help answer some of your questions. See about mid-way, Page 2 of this post. One of the rare times he did not use his Stanley 45 and resorted to a power tool to cut dovetails versus tongue & groove.

Both times I have made bread board ends....I used a sliding dovetail joint.     "Tail"  was cut on the ends of the tops,  a "pin" was milled along the edge of the bread boards.  

Then usually a spot of glue near the end.  

Ok...got bored...always a bad sign...decided to putter around for a bit in the shop...trying to keep the spot on the arm clean, at the same time..

 

Tools were getting a bit too cob-webby, and dusty....air hose to blow the crud away..from me

Wanted to find a place for these....away from the dust.

Dunlaps, an Anant A4, and the latest Stanley #4c.   I set the Stanley in a better spot..

Just your basic "Starter Set"....the #4c, a #5 and a #0-7....More of a Ready Rack.   As for the "Mutts" and a 035 Trans..

Cleared a spot under the bench....The No. 8 and a Cambered jack scrub plane also reside here.   May build a door to close this off...someday

Had a stack of parts for that tray....sitting on the Boss' washer......decided to move them back to the bench.....and lay out some tools...

There is a small dovetail bit laying there, I used it to set the angle on the bevel gauge.  Hmmm, dovetails?

Well, one thing led to another, more tools came out..

Sorry, Lew, but Hard Maple needs a little more OOMPH!  behind the chisel.. Decided to at least do one corner..

Will need a little fine tuning

Arm was starting to get sore...but the bench does look a little cleaner?

BTW...dog holes are great at keeping chisels from rolling off the bench...onto my feet...

IF the arm feels a bit better tomorrow....maybe I can get the other three corners done?

Something a bit different for today....hinges were looking a bit..."wimpy"  decided toadapt a few others for the job...

Took a while at the grinder.  I needed three hinges, the fourth shows what they looked like, before I did  some grinding...

 

Got the lid over to the vise, marked a few holes, drilled a few pilot holes...and installed the hinges onto the lid..

Now you can see WHY  I ground away a bit of the hinges.  Cleared the bench, set the lid aside, hauled the case to the bench (whew!!) and then added the lid, with a couple clamps.   More pilot holes, more screws....finally put the case back on the floor...

Hey, they work!   Closed the lid to check how it sits...

Even have it centered!   Ok, I cut the two rails for length..

Drilled and countersunk a few mounting holes.   Need to find out how low to make the rails, once the tray is done...

Pilot holes?   Countersink?   Easy, when you have the drills set up..

Did I mention they are Cordless?  Millers Falls 6" and a Stanley 6"

Set up the "Work Zone" have three corners to do....that saw?

My Dovetail saw.    Along with a few other tools.  Mark out the pins, saw the pins...chop the waste..

I added a poplar pad, trying to save the bench's top... I used these pins to lay out the tails.    Cut away the waste to leave the tails on the bandsaw,  dry fit..

And then just work my way around until all four corners are done...sit the bottoms panel on top...

Was getting ready to flip this over, and mark where the rebates will go.....when the Boss decided she needed to go to the store...grrrrr

 

So, maybe after supper, I can do a bit more?   Stay tuned

Earlier today,  got things all glued up.    Let things set in the clamps until I got back from taking the GrandBRATS home...

 

Got home, ordered Pizza.   Removed the clamps, and trimmed the dovetails flush.   Then marked the poplar bottom for size, and cut it down....

Poplar was square, box wasn't quite there.    Beat the bottom panel into place....everything is NOW squared....to keep it that way, used a few nails, but no glue..

About 5 or so along the long sides, one dead center on the short sides.  Sanded the bottom edges flush with the bottom panel...used the tray to mark out where the rails were to go.   Three screws to hold each rail in place ( again, no glue) and did a test drive..

Seemed to fitted nicely, enough....even slides almost all the way to the other end.   Corner posts stick out a bit too far at the far end...

Closed the lid, to make sure the tray cleared it....lid closed tightly, but missed the tray....must have done something right, for a change

One last look inside?

Will try to add a brass chain on the right side, to hold the lid.    Not sure IF I will add a handle to the tray. 

 

Need to haul this upstairs to where I can apply a few coats of shellac, inside and out.....then, maybe a clear gloss top coat? 

 

Almost done...and almost out of lumber....may have to go out and scrounge another 1/2 truck load?
