Hand Tools.jpg

Hand tools are often neglected in the search for the pleasing objects of the past. Considered too utilitarian, their decorative appeal—the mellow patina of the wood plane or the delicately tapered legs of a pair of dividers—often goes unnoticed. Surprisingly modern in design, the ancient carpenter's or cabinetmaker's tool has a vitality of line that can, without reference to technical significance, make it an object of considerable grace and beauty. The hand tool is frequently a lively and decorative symbol of a society at a given time—a symbol, which, according to the judges at London's Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851, gives "indications of the peculiar condition and habits of the people whence they come, of their social and industrial wants and aims, as well as their natural or acquired advantages." The hand tool, therefore, should be considered both as an object of appealing shape and a document illustrative of society and its progress. ~ (Woodworking Tools 1600-1900 Author: Peter C. Welsh)

The last on-line auction I "attended" was near the end of September, 2021. Several tool lots; won a few; several I didn't. Most of my purchases were more L&G related stuff so I won't bore you with that. However, one lot turned out to have some surprises. Actual auction site pictures. I bid on this lot thinking the tool box might be an old Craftsman or ??? hip roof tool box. Didn't look inside the toolbox really at the pick-up site. It was kinda frenzied there and I was under a time crunch to get back in time for grandson's football games plus my stuff was located all over and you had to pick and load everything yourself. I wasn't…

From on-line auction about three weeks ago, I bid on "4 empty tools cases" I was the only one to bid, so got them for $1+ auction premium. Due to miserable weather it was a few days before I got them out of the truck and to my surprise, they weren't empty. No major scores, but got $1.15 worth. I was just happy with the cases. Finally got a-round-tuit taking pictures. You know what "they" say..."one man's junk is another man's junk, 'er treasures." Picture is auction site picture. I wanted the top case for my Ryobi cordless reciprocating saw and R/A drill. Figured I could cut out any molded pockets so both would fit. Lucked out, some…

I have been trying to find out what type of hand plane this is. There is a knob with the victor logo of what appears to be Leonard Baileys Victor line but nothing that I could find matches anything as far as the plane itself goes. There are no other markings that I can see and the plane measures 26" long. Any help identifying this thing would be greatly appreciated. Also no screw for the tote either, it is just held on by friction.

Gonna try these out this summer. Got mine in today. Saw a guy on youtube recommend them. They're chromed.......actually made for something in the ski industry. I've never used anything but the mid-grade newer Nicholson type for filing...all the good stuff I've been buying last several years was coarse for rasping on powder horns etc...

Dropped a bag of clothes off at the Lutheran Center....wasn't any tools in their Thrift Store.... Had a 24" F style clamp from Harbor Freight...that the rubber handle had broken..was informed that IF i bring the clamp back to the store, they would replace it, free of charge ( Life time warrantee) Took care of that. On the way back home-station....stopped at the Local Antique Mall....and spend $10 and change.. Sole looked good..at least.. Iron has issues, though.. As someone used a hammer to adjust the depth of cut....has a "mushroom" growing just above the Stanley Logo Might get around to a little clean up, s…

Was cleaning out the area behind where the Drill Press USED to sit....and buried under all the dust, and shavings... Wire brush to get to look this good....bolt was bent....a 32oz Ball Pean Hammer soon had it straightened out. Threads were cleaned out, and oiled...then the bolt was ran all the way out, and then all the way back in..with a bit of "fine tuning" along the way...until it was working like new Other side says it MIGHT be a No. 4? So...what IS a Tank Clamp?

just for the heck of it my primary drawer in the little tool box at the restore with the tools i use most frequently to de-contruct lights, fans, etc for re-cycling of the metals. since i am a volunteer there, all the money we raise from this goes directly into stuff for new homes. included are 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 mm wrenches (with the 14 being the most commonly used on 3/8 pipe nipples holding lamps together. that long tubular job in the middle is a 10" 14mm deep well socket (originally for certain Denso plugs). 1/2" pipe normally held in place with 11/16 nuts. red handle pliers are the HF replacements for my Knipex pliers which i leave at home now. 1/4 ratchet se…

What is the difference between a coping saw and a fret saw? I was browsing the Blue Spruce Toolworks site and came across their coping saw and fret saw page. I couldn't see much difference, except for maybe a small size difference. I was also looking at their bench chisels. $994 for a set of chisels? Granted, they are good tools, and it was an 11 piece set, but still. $994? Maybe I was blinded by the price, and that's why I couldn't see any difference in the saws.

I've always struggled with cutting small parts to length, even when I had my radial arm saw, as it always seemed like overkill. I've been using a couple of Japanese pull saws for a while, really like them, and decided to make a bench hook for cutting small pieces. All parts are from the scrap bin - offcuts of luan plywood, a piece of cherry for the clamp block and a piece of thicker edge banding for the fence. First photo is the original one that I built - worked OK, but it occurred to me afterwards that the fence would be better behind the sawing direction. The original unit in use, cutting the MDF strips for the grid in my bit storage cabin…

Last fall I picked up an old Stanley #10 for cheap money because it was missing a Chip-breaker. I recently found one non eBay. It's not a great 'Looker' especially with a chunk missing in the throat. With my internet connection down last night I started to work on it putting stripper on the handle and the bed to remove the red paint. and this morning started the clean up It's coming along Ok the worst I see is the low spot in the side and bottom ofd the body and the cutting edge of the blade is way out of square. I didn't bother trying to get all the paint off the tote, all this plane will be is a user.

A Garage sale find earlier this summer....Millers Falls No. 1816 MitreBox and saw.....Paid $1....needed to pull the nails holding the box to an old pine 2 x 8 plank.. Got to looking the saw over....Warranted Superior 4" x 16".....Hmmm, might be worth a rehab? (hide yer eyes, Mabel! ) And.. Shouldn't have to worry about any etch, would have been a silk-screened thing anyway...but...that handle needs ..something... Yeah...right. Traced a better looking pattern, bandsaw to remove the worst areas......Flex-shaft Dremel with several different sanding grit drums....LOTS of sanding dust...check the grip with my hands...…

I'd purchased this drill with a "collection" of other items 3 or 4 years ago.; IIRC I paid $2 for it. Once I brought it home, it took a couple small (10") pipe wrenches to loosen the chuck so I could get the broken drill bit removed. From the damage on the end of the chuck, I'm guessing it wasn't the first time either. Probably explains why the chuck jaw springs were damaged too. Anyways, tossed in a box not sure I'd even attempt to rebuild it. Once the kids were back in school last year, I finally got A Round 2It. It had been used & abused. Perhaps was an early cordless paint mixer? None of the original bits were in the handle, BTW. …
