October 8, 20205 yr Popular Post Here we are a week into October already. Beautiful day here is southern PA. The leaves are beginning to change. Our turners have been quite busy this week, so lets get started. Our Patriot Turners- A while back, @DRAGON1 asked if one of our members could turn a large coffee mug. @Gerald came through with TWO mugs- More in Dragon1's post- Speaking of @Gerald, he is experimenting with some new inks to add color to his turning- Gerald tells us more about this piece in his post- Gerald also showed us a rough turned walnut bowl he is making. Check out the purple hues in the wood! You can see more of the colors in Gerald's post along with how he is drying the blank- @Masonsailor started a new project project for his wife- Check out his post to see how he got to this point and take particular note to the awesome drawing his wife supplied! @AndrewB gave us a heads-up about a fantastic perk from Easy Wood Tools. Those wonderful folks there are providing veterans, active duty military and first responders a 10% discount. Thanks, @Jim from Easy Wood Tools !!!!!! Andrew has been really busy this past week with lots of different bowls. In this post he provided a video of turning a yellow birch bowl- And, in this post, Andrew gives us a look at a couple of purple heart bowls- Check out some of the comments about the use of a drive spur- I pulled this from another forum here at the Patriot. I think it is fitting- What’s Coming Up- Click on the above image for more information and the link to registration. For The Newbies- In @AndrewB's post on turning the purple heart bowls, the topic of drive spurs was discussed. When seating the drive spur, it is advisable NOT to use a steel hammer. Making a mallet, to set the drive spur is an excellent, practical project for the any turner. Mike Peace shows us how it's done- Expand Your Horizons- Carl Jacobson turns this walnut platter into an awesome work of art- Rick Turns makes a "Termite" hollowing tool. There are 2 parts to the build. The second part is linked from this video- Tim Yoder uses a Banksia pod and some casting resin to create a really neat turning. In this video, Tim uses a pressure pot to eliminate bubbles. Recently the Alumilite company has marketed a product call "Deep Pour" resin that has practically eliminated the pressure pot requirements. I haven't tried the product yet but the videos look promising. New Turning Items- Here's something you don't need to buy! This tool can provide accurate thickness measurements of walls and bottoms of turnings. Thanks, @Gerald for giving us a look! Gerald explains a little more about this tool in his post- Everything Else- @Kevin the turner posted information in the Veterans Corner about free tools for veterans. If you know a qualified woodturner, this link might be something that will help- Here is Kevin's original post- Rick Turns added a couple of YouTube entries for woodturning videos- and- Safe turning and stay well
