Wednesday's Wisdom For Woodturners April 1, 2020

I wish I could say this is all an April Fools joke, but...

Two posts this week I thought were extremely important even though they didn't deal with turning. The first from @Ron Altier about isolation. This can be a real deal breaker for some folks. I'm glad we have each other to help fend off those feelings.

The second was from @Kevin Beitz wondering why more of us weren't posting on the forums now that we are asked to stay home.

With all of the doom and gloom bombarding us from all sides, some of us just can't get the juices flowing enough to really enjoy time in the shop.

Our Patriot Turners-

@Lissa Hall showed us her first turned bowl and it is a beauty. Lissa turned it from cedar-

Check out Lissa's post and give her kudos on a great turning!

@Masonsailor continues to finish up his lazy susan tulips. He have us two updates this week-

Our old friend @Charles Nicholls is still cranking out his great stuff. Charles showed us what he is up to on a post from last Friday-

New member @marshall posted an inquiry about learning to use a Ringmaster from Peter Merritt. He has received a few comment but hopefully some of you can direct him to more information-

What’s Coming Up-

"Turning Tuesday at Woodcraft" is a new video presentation from our sponsor. This is from their YouTube channel- "We are starting a weekly live video series where we hang out in the shop and make something. As of right now Tuesdays at 2pm Frank will be turning one of our project kits. We will hopefully be adding more streams as well. Make sure you follow us on social media to stay up to date."

For The Newbies-

There are pretty much as many ways to turn a project as there are turners. Here's a nice video on turning spheres without any special jigs-

Expand Your Horizons-

Last week we posted a rather lengthy video on getting into resin turning. Woodcraft has a written tutorial for those wishing to give it a try. You can read it at- https://www.woodcraft.com/blog_entries/resins-for-rookies

New Turning Items-

Sorry, could find anything this week.

Everything Else-

With everyone trying to stay safe, some turning clubs are using virtual meetings to keep in touch. I think some of our turners, here, have done this. Here is a video from Mike Peace going over some thoughts and ideas.

And for your enjoyment, a little something from our good friend Tim Yoder-

Safe turning and stay well

Great post, lots of good stuff @lew..

For many the isolation is a issue, and understandably so.  Please if you are feeling down or just want to talk, REACH OUT.  You want to chat on PM, share pictures on Facebook messenger, maybe a phone call someone I will be happy to listen.

Other like me probably don't see the world any different because we already preferred isolation.  My work is listed as essential so I still put in a full day.  To me nothing much has changed.  Thus far getting supplies has not been an issue and I do keep a fair amount of stock handy for the 3 lifetimes of projects I have in my 2 notebooks.

Now making any kind of real progress each day on smaller projects is slow, but as the pieces get finished it goes together well.  Currently finishing a sink project so no turning stuff to do yet.  And of course I have several odds and ends not really woodworking but maintenance items that are in progress as well.

I live a pretty isolated life as well. Although live in NC and virus getting bad. We upped lockdown  in the state but people still do not seem to be listening. Lowe's home improvement did me a solid regarding a band saw blade for older saw. I was sold wrong size, just as much my fault and explained it to manger. But because of lockdown and me having reactive airway problems my doctor does not want me out at all. So Lowe's manage apparently lives out this way and said he would drop new one off in my mailbox and told me not to worry about being wrong one back he would take care of it. He knew me from coming in with service dog and knew I did woodworking stuff for charity for service dog agency. So I just wanted to give them a shout out! With so much sadness and heart break out there it warms the heart to also see so many good things and people pulling together even at a distance. I also have been trying to get my garden going so I can give some of the elderly some unquestionable good veggies. We are all in this together, we have to be.

Thanks for the honorable mention, I will put up a new post with pics of the items when they are ready, which at least 1 should be ready tomorrow evening, and maybe 2. I have a total of 4 that are in various stages. 😊

Well, I am still living mostly as I did before.  The state is on lockdown, finally, but the only thing that effects us is it is hard to find milk, butter and eggs.  And, I have tried the online ordering and that is fun.  Oh, well, a different subject for a different thread.  Lew, this is another super thread.  Lisa, that is one terrific bowl, especially for a first time.  I love Paul's tulips and the whole cabinet.  The videos are also wonderful classrooms.  I have been trying to figure out how to turn a sphere and now I know where to look and watch.  I have so much to do, so many neighbors and family members to keep tabs on.  Some in New Orleans.  Some in Knoxville, TN and Atlanta, GA.  And, then there is the domestication.

Thank you, Lew, for keeping us posted as I have missed some of these threads.  It is nice to keep it all in one reference.

Thanks for a post covering current status for everyone.

Our club is one of those considering doing IRD. We have been using a computer program called vMix for our in house demos for about 3 years and have done our first 2 Zoom meetings for Executive Committee and for the club to talk. We did not get good response as only 4 club members and 3 Exec. Cmte attended online.

We have missed the last two meetings. February canceled due to near record flooding. March canceled due to meeting area closed at the beginning of the shut downs here . We will see in two weeks how it works out.

Thanks Lew.  Great post again.  I never tried turning a sphere and your video gave my brain a bump to do that.

@Woodbutcherbynight Thanks! Isolation, for me, isn't too much of a problem. I taught Vocational School for 33 years. At the end of the day, the solitude was welcome. I've always been an introvert. My wife on the other hand is climbing the walls.

@Lissa Hall Thanks for posting your bowl! We all appreciate seeing the stuff the rest of the turners make!

@Charles Nicholls Thanks! Looking forward to seeing the turnings!

@FlGatorwood Thank You! Wanna see that sphere when it gets done!

@Gerald Thanks! I was supposed to do an Easy Wood Tools demo for a club in State College, PA. It was postponed until May. Guess we'll see if goe then. Thanks for the software mentions.

@HandyDan Thank You! Want to see your sphere when it gets done, also!!!

Everyone, please stay well

Np Lew, I wanted to have some pictures of finished items today but forgot that I had a doctors appointment. I also want to put more finish on the items before I put them together.
