John

Let me tell you a little story. I was on the 10th floor working and the carpenter foreman called me over and pointed down at the dumpster and there was the Job Supt. hiding in the dumpster peaking through the crack in the rear doors watching to see if he could catch someone doing something he didn't like.

The Foreman got on the radio called down to the forklift driver to pick up the skid with the wet trash in it and dump it is the dumpster.  Well you can guess the rest of the story. Didn't see the Supt. the rest of the day, I heard later that when he got back to the trailer he wanted to fire everyone.

I was told we had accountants in the main office calculate how much it cost  company wide for the employees to have a coffee break every day. stc.

.although it is a bit ugly outside.

Yes, I'd say it is. Somehow, we missed the nastiness this time around...all East and South.

Well at least you could be inside. Door is looking good...I'm in it to the finish

greasing the whip

Wait a minute.   You got a greased whip?   Why when i was young....B)

Keeping them happy works better than the whip, greased or not. This is a production shop, set up to turn things out with the minimum labor content. it could be better but we already have a pretty high over head. Which reminds me IWF is coming up this summer in Atlanta. Any of you going? Everything related to woodwork, from hand tools to million $ machines. Fun to see what is available.

Was going to take a nap.....maybe let the door cure til tomorrow....nope, diddn't happen..

Went to the shop..was just looking for hinges...just in case I needed to buy ones....

Tested the clamps..removed them slowly..door didn't fall apart..good sign?

Placed the door in it's new home...to see which was "Up" or "down"

Folded up a couple pieces of sandpaper, to get a bit of clearance on the bottom...Hinges?

5ab2f831d5786_badhinges.jpg.fbf191050db299bbf705c4c557cf7756.jpg

I did  have a couple packs of these..things....I hate these.    But, I can make use of the screws..

5ab2f885c670f_goodhinge.jpg.894625c74e94d1c0052b3d33a0e214e2.jpg

Because I couldn't find the screws for these.   Needed a way to start the screws in the right spots..

5ab2f90bc79df_hingescrewstarter.jpg.de401d5c65b5ec5259d85435a92c1009.jpg

It centers itself in the hole on a hinge, then you drive that pointy end into the wood..  I even "clocked" the screws..

5ab2f96f4a52a_clockedscrews.jpg.2adf93ca243b686aeb99b0cac5c2dfee.jpg

Or, tried to.   Had some knobs. and installed one of these..

knobs.jpg.14defa3745ab3ab57faeccaae81428f2.jpg

Used the two 6" sweep braces to drill a pilot hole, and a bit of countersink for the screw's head..Added a brass hook & eye..

5ab2fa2329196_DoorPIP.jpg.ed22a318c11d4dfa1cc024ce420b51a3.jpg

Need to build a drawer to fill that gap between the two cases....add a couple cleats to attach the top to the base...then the stain goes on.

Stay tuned...I still need a nap..

I'm tuned...don't worry about the nap...the cat & I took care of that for you this morning as soon as the house cleared.

Really looking good with the door in place. You're definitely going to need help to get this one up the stairs.

Hmm, for some strange reason..my hands smell like Golden Oak stain...

This may be a long post, hope nobody minds...

Typing and trying to eat a sammich, not the best way to do this, but here goes. Meandered to the shop..forgot camera.. meander back to the shop, had to turn these into sides and a back for a drawer..

5ab53d34d2c14_drawerparts.jpg.ef3560148d64ec20f89417c598f977f7.jpg

Got these to match each other, already had fitted the drawer front into the opening..

5ab53d98616b5_drawerfront.jpg.d2d1ab64cb85e126f27bda81416e5e3c.jpg

Decided to use through dovetails, to match the large drawer

5ab53ddc6bd16_dryfit.jpg.a1f53ff30b8def91c24b81013f7444ba.jpg

Dry fit.  then the groove for a plywood bottom was milled..

groovy.jpg.e10ca43a123870f78c7ecce2254227d7.jpg

Even the back got a groove....back was attached via a couple screws into the ends of the sides..used a smooth plane to fit the drawer..

5ab53e91a9955_drawerfitted.jpg.a960539cc4c45cb060ef8e2e817503bb.jpg

Dovetails sanded smooth, holes filled, knob in place, test fit?

5ab53edbf1113_drawerfits.jpg.05e6d2250fd36637b0e1efee8d124410.jpg

Now, the bookcase was designed to be removable, to make it easier to transport ( and get  up my stairs) so I needed a pair of "cleats" installed

5ab53f508822a_cletus12.jpg.d235ea260d09e24409f6b770c49b1a3f.jpg

Two countersunk screws into the top of the case, and two to hold the Bookcase in place, per cleat.   These also act as drawer guides.

Nailed on some pads for the feet..

5ab53fcda5f11_footpads.jpg.42e668e122b199af753a02007f46339e.jpg

Now, the reason my hands smell like Golden Oak stain.....

5ab54026d5c4e_fullbench.jpg.0a088a8364012947f8f081132b1d5e4f.jpg

Since I had to do the cleats, these two were set on the bench.   Stain applied while they were just sitting around..

bookcase.jpg.c7fd268af365a3679de1d55bf2ef3c29.jpg

Once I got the lower cabinet done, I could set these into place where they belonged...( not blotch, GRAIN!)

I also set the large drawer on the bench, wasn't much room with these two sitting there..but..

5ab54140c2ac9_shelfunit.jpg.77c347f43e273dfa83294bf7cfbb792d.jpg

Yes, I did stain the shelves, even though they will get a pair of folding baskets on each shelf...freckled drawer?

After tipping the lower case every which way to cover all the Pine....was finally able to set everything in place..ready?

Well the skinny drawer does look good?

5ab5423ec4ee4_drawerPIP.jpg.8cd6665fc926e095f111e42c3ce3f8c1.jpg

And now the main event..

5ab54267e1118_stainedPIP.jpg.de7b001fd2790300dd1c697a20b44e6a.jpg

Waiting on the smelly stain to stop..smelling the place out, should be about dry, then.   Then, a couple coats of Amber Shellac?

Shop is not the best for project pictures...maybe once it gets upstairs?   Stay tuned..:)

That really look great!

Curiosity asks:   Do the cleats have an advantage over a couple of threaded inserts and KD bolts?   (well, i mean, other than possible availability.  ;))

They also guide the drawer as it slides in and out.   Cleats stay hidden, with no sign of what is holding the bookcase in place....

You're beginning to crank out dovetails faster than a machine.:P

Turned out very nice Steven.

Thanks for taking us along the journey especially with all the pictures.

Always enjoy watching what comes out of your shop.

Be sure to sign the bottom and date it,so in 200years they will know who made it. Good job, Steven, That stain really brought the birds eyesmand the grain.

Will be a slight pause in the shop action.   Friday night, had a bad A-Fib episode...wound up in first the ER..then most of Saturday in their ICU....finally released late Saturday evening...have to contact my Cardio Doctor Monday morning......slept all last night after I got home, woke up a little bit ago....still feeling sore and lousy....

May be a few days, before this project gets done....me and  the cupboard...

You take care, now. R&R is best. Hope the cardio doc gets those meds straightened out, Monday. We need you healthy and back to work.

Take a break Steve. The hutch will wait for you
