February 28, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Ok, this morning did a test fit of the second mortise..did not go well...side split out a bit. Trimmed the too-fat parts a bit until it did fit. Glue and a clamp And while I was at it, glue first mortise as well.. Left it to cure for the day....dropped off paperwork, Cardio Doctor visit, shopping at Menard's....finally got home....had three 1 x 10 x 6' planks and a 1 x 4 x 6' stick. Got those into the house, and clamped them up...trying to season the bows out of one....Then a bit more shop time... Not all the parts are "pretty" to look at...but, once the 1/4" skin goes on these shelf frames....this mess will never be seen again... Some of the other defects, I worked around.. Hmmm, stupid place to sit a knot....we have ways.. "Missed it by that much, Chief" The Mortise Jig also serves as an extra hand... When doing a glue up....Got two frames glued up.. And ran out of c clamps....well, I can wait until tomorrow, and get the other two frames done. Once the frames are all done, I can gang them up, and mill dovetail "pins" on the ends, so the frames can slide into the sliding dovetail sockets. I can glue the 1/4" skins on to the shelves, add a kicker to the drawer runner. Assemble the case, and add the back panel.... Have something special planned ( there's that word again..planned?) for the face frame....but you will have to wait a while to find out what it is... Stay tuned....( Lew's Mallet, again?)

March 1, 20188 yr Author When I was about 1-2 years old, living in Quincy, OH. The "Big Four Railroad" kept one of those sitting in a siding, waiting to help a train climb the grade up to Bellefontaine, OH. Then it would return and wait for the next train. There was a roundhouse, and coaling station in Bellefontaine...they'd load up and come back down the hill. ( CCC & St L. was a division of the New York Central RR) Mine pounds chisels..that thing would pound the rails....
March 1, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Ok, raggy....got frames #3 and #4 done....all clamped up, and waiting for the cure to cure....among other things today... There it is, trying to run away...good like I like "old" tools.. Used a bunch of them, today. Had to add the sandpaper to the mortise jig.. May be about time to replace the jaws? Once I have the lines laid out, the back saw was used.. Much easier to be able to sit down and do this...trying to stay inside the lines, or at least split them. A little over-cut isn't too bad. Then a chisel to dig a hole.. As deep as I can, then come in from the end and pop the waste out.....dry fit.. No gaps, sits square, add some glue and a clamp...on to the next one.. Keep going until..Pizza ! After Pizza, came back to the shop, and.. Only two to go...by that time....glue had set enough I could steal a couple clamps from #3 frame. Swept the floor, remembered to turn that lamp off..called it a day. Maybe tomorrow, I can get all the clamps off, gang all four up, and mill some pins to fit the sliding dovetails? Stay tuned...
March 1, 20188 yr Popular Post I should never have to go to a big box store for lumber. Over the years I squired away "special" boards for that some day project. Got a huge pile now. Still haven't made that some day project and am running out of time.
March 1, 20188 yr Author Pills for Breakfast...about like George Jetson.... Routers are LOUD, MESSY, Uncomfortable machines....but when you do have to use them.... I guess I can put up with them....now IF they would just clean up after themselves ganged the frames up this morning, trued the ends up, Had to move the fence a few times, rather than shift the parts around... Once this little square said things were ready.... Need to remember which direction to start a cut .....flip the mess over, and do the other end the same way....Then it was time to put that loud, messy machine away...and get back to the hand tool stuff. With the frames still clamped together... I made sure the front and back edges matched each other.... Then put away the clamps, and start the install.. No glue was used, just a friction fit....Before I could install the top frame, I needed to install a kicker.. Cut to length, drill a pilot hole on each end....needed to countersink the screw head..should I change bits, or? Just change drills. One of the frames needed a little "help" to slide into place....Block Of Maple and a hammer to slide it home...Got all the frames in place, stand the case up on it's own four feet.. Need to install the shelf panels, and the back of the case..next time...stay tuned.. Stay tuned....
March 1, 20188 yr ..and all before lunch! This got me thinking. How were sliding dovetail joints made before machine power. I can envision a plane blade for cutting the "male" dovetail but how were the female sections made? A dado then widened at the base? Inquiring minds and all...

March 1, 20188 yr Nice to see someone still do traditional construction. Are you going to hand dovetail the drawers? I'm just starting to make some drawers for tools. Will use Hoffmann keys. Really quick and hold well. Is that cheating?

March 1, 20188 yr A router has always been one of my go to tools when I can't get it done on a shaper. I do like using hand tools but it can take all night to get done with a Stanley hand router what a Bosch can do in 10 minutes.

March 3, 20188 yr Author Roh kay, Raggie....house sitting today and tomorrow, until the Boss returns home...to include "puppy-sitting" a few Flea-bags....doesn't leave much for shop time.....tried anyway this morning...hauled two plywood handi-panels to the shop...one for the case's back, and a drawer bottom. The other was for two shelves, and a larger drawer bottom. Had enough trouble, marking the size needed for the shelves, you'd think I would have gotten the hint.. Went to cut the panels to size....can't get to my circular saws...tried a hand saw.....wasn't the best way to cut 1/4" plywood....then, while shifting things around to get the next panel cut....CRASH! The D-7 I was using, hit the floor, handle first, of course...Grrrrrr Going to be one of THOSE days....Decided IF it was going to be an ugly day IN the shop, might as well use an ugly saw, brought a "tool box" saw down from upstairs.. From Aldi's....got the other shelf panel cut, and the back of the case cut...then hung this saw up on a nail... Short piece will get used for the tiny drawer between the two units. Test fit the back panel.. While I cleared the top of two benches off. Main bench also got a plywood panel, to bridge the tool well, so I could stand the case up on the bench.. Worked on the bottom shelf first. big bead of glue, moosh the panel into it, then nail it off. Ball Pean hammer? Well, out in the middle along the edges of the frame, it helps drive the nails. Acts as an anvil. Start the nail, put the BP underneath, then hammer the nail home. Pliers to hold the nails in places my fat fingers can't go...also save them from getting hit by the hammer.. The "other bench" that was cleared off...? Is this little place. Once the shelves were done, I turned the case around, and laid it done.. So I could install the back onto the case, and square it up, too.. Close, but no cigar...bead of glue onto all the areas the back will touch...plywood, not mine Line one edge up. I also marked where the frames are, so I could find them later,,,,Once one edge looked good, I ran a few screws along that edge, to "fix" the panel in place. Added some clampsto pull the other side in a bit, and try to hold things square, long enough to get ONE screw in place over there... Then marked a line across where the frames are supposed to be, and add a few more screws. Worked my way to the bottom.. Then got this mess OFF my bench, and back onto the floor.. Again, clamps to pull the sides in tight. Laid out the corner blocks. I need to miter the ends of these. Screw and glue them in place, and add a slot for a screw. These are what the top will get fastened to. Now, IF I can just get TO the mitresaw.. It's back there, somewhere. I also laid out most of the parts for the face frame.. Need to cut a top rail, as these others are too skinny. Also set out a teaser of sorts.. Have a plan for this thing...stay tuned Edited March 3, 20188 yr by steven newman
