March 7, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Well, Plavix has been stopped....shaking is slowing down....Doctor visit tomorrow afternoon.... Walk-about didn't turn much up....same old-same old..but I picked up a "lead" on a new place... After supper....got out the "Toys" again.. Something missing here..... Ah, there it is..."Lew's Mallet".. Chopped a few holes in the stiles ( and NOT me) Dry fit a few... Then a few more.. Spread some glue around... Maybe a tad too much....clean up, on aisle 1....but had things all clamped up for the night.. Will let this mess sit overnight....may try to install it tomorrow....we'll see......Then either work on a top, or a drawer...maybe.. Stay tuned..

March 7, 20188 yr Author Doctor visit: Going to get the head scanned.....possible a bleeder inside...will update later...whenever they can get me into the scanner.. Frame is out of the clamps.....trying to get motivated to do a bit of shop time...

March 8, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Tried just sitting around when we got home yesterday.....just can't sit still...so, I SLOWLY did a little bit in the shop.... Test fit....meh...will need a few more clamps...cleared the bench top off...and, after some debate on how to do the counter-bored holes, clamps things up to pull the sides into place..and glue and screws to hold one side where it belonged Then, turn this thing around, and work along the other side... First off, I had to use the bigger clamp to pull the side into square with the frame...add a screw, then apply the clamps where needed, to pull the side closer to the frame, and screw that down. ...once that was done, I took the clamps off, laid the case on it's side... Squared the feet front to back on both sides of the case...used a high-tech cutting tool, too. Then placed the saw on the bench, had other uses for it.. Then grabbed the old stanley smooth plane, and worked on some edges... To "flush" the sides to the edges of the frame. Would have taken too long with the sander, anyway. Stood this mess up.. And took a short break....on the way back to the shop, picked up the 1 x 8 x8' and brought it down to the shop....needed 27" long parts cut.. First two weren't too bad....saw operator..still needs a little practice... There was one spot I wanted to avoid on the last of three cuts.. But, to get around this ugly thing, I needed to accept this lesser ugly.. Not a biggie...as the first two were almost wide enough.. I did have a 1 x 4 that would fit....could not get around a huge knot on it. So, I used that 1 x 4 to mark the 1 x 8, and make a rip cut, that also get rid of the Junior Knot. Laid it inbetween the first two.. Panel now measures 3/4" x 27" x 18".....I do have a couple leftovers from that 1 x 8.. Ain't they lovely? There is a spot I will need to plane a bit.. Or..just flip that board over. As for the fancy joints on the face frame.. Will need a little clean up....need to make a few plugs, as well.. Have a few holes to fill... Won't bore you with the details on what bit was used for those holes....maybe another post... Need tojoint some edges today, and try a glue up for the top, then get a start on the drawer build....stay tuned...

March 8, 20188 yr Popular Post If you are doing plugs you could just plug those ugly spots too. Now go and get some rest
March 8, 20188 yr Author I'd tack a nap, but..... But..Maxwell and Miss Bandit are taking up my spot....let sleeping dogs lay....tried out the jointer plane, where it could just stay flat on a board.. 10 pounds is still 10 pounds. I don't care how nice them shavings look... Tried out something a little smaller... Just a tad smaller...still does shavings like it's big brother.. Used both on some edges...as well as the rough sawn faces....after all, I wanted to get this next step done.. So..how much smaller is a jack plane than that #8 jointer? This is the basic set of hand planes everyone says you have to have...Jointer, Jack and Smoother.... They will get a bit of work, once that panel is out of the clamps...stay tuned.. ( need to evict two pups from MY nap spot..) Edited March 8, 20188 yr by steven newman
March 10, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Got the top out of the clamps...and let it sit a bit...got the drawer runners and guides done.. Runner is just a 1 x 1. Was a tight fit...hammer to adjust. bead of glue and a single screw to hold it there. Guide did not have to be all the way back, just enough to guide the drawer in. Single screw to hold it while the glue dried...Got both done on each side.. By which time, we had to head over and get my head scanned.....and a few other errands...dodged a few idiots on the roadway, too..even one a couple blocks from home. She was in the left turn lane..decided she just had to go straight ahead, even though I was turning across her path.... Finally got settled back at home....and decided to hide out in the shop...quieter down there... Used this old fella to clean the glue joints, and level things out a bit....then the larger plane took over.. Right after I set up to square the ends... Hey, it IS a Vintage saw, after all... Hmmm...Needed to drill a few slotted holes..marked out for the slots.. marked a spot about in the center of each line. and grabbed the drill.. I drill a through hole first, then GENTLY rock the drill back and forth will turn the handle..only snapped one bit ( had a spare handy) Came out like this. Allows the top to move with the seasons...top was place face down on the bench, and the case sat on it.. I had MAYBE 2" between the feet and the overhead light. Case was centered onto the top..about a 5/8" overhang...then 4 screws were added.. Each into the center of the slot. Set the case back onto the floor, only hit the light twice.. Used a half pint can to sketch a radius, then used this thing to draw two corners...and got out the Green Machine.. Not too sure of this one's Vintage...but.. Then set up the router.. With a small cove bit. Front and both ends were routed.. Then a bit of sanding, to soften the sharp edges a bit....then set this case aside.. Need to plug the counter bores, and build a drawer. Then the Bookcase can be started...I hope. Stay tuned,

March 10, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Tried to build a drawer today.....been processing 40+ photos down to something a bit more easy to post.. Took a board.. And tried to make it into a drawer... Only to find out I didn't had a board to use for the back....had to run to the Blue-Borg, and buy another 1 x 6.... May wait until tomorrow, to make the back, and post the "rest of the story.."
March 11, 20188 yr Author Popular Post Sooo...."Build-a-Drawer"? Through dovetails? Ok.... handsaw to cut a blank for the drawer's front.. Cut to rough length from that 8' long plank...trimmed this to fit.. As for that knot, we have ways.. Drill a hole through the knot, lots of glue, and attach the knob....orient the knobs grain so it smiles back at you.. Got out the usual suspects to do dovetails with.. Dovetail bit is to set the bevel gauge with....but before I could do too much, I need to plane the faces of the board, was cupped a bit.. Set up to mark a few lines.. I use the bit to make one line on the edge of the board, then set the bevel...and mark things out. Small combo square to carry the marks down the faces. Square was also set for how thick the boards are.. Tick marks to show the waste parts. Lower the board in the vise, and get out the saw.. Shop stool so I can sit and saw...trying to split the lines.. Not too hateful? Then lay the board on the bench, and chop 1/2 way in from one side.. Leave a little out on the edge, for support...flip this over, and chisel the rest out.. One end done, repeat for the other end. To make things even, I used a square to transfer the pin spacings Then just repeat until the other set of pins were done.. Handle sticking up is a small sash chisel..yes, I had my Mountain Dew handy.. Now, about the sides of this drawer. I had set back a couple off-cuts from doing the sides of the case...They needed jointed to match each other. . They needed sawn to match for length..couldn't get to the mitrebox, so the bandsaw was used...meh. Clamp the two together, and use a block plane to square the end up....just the end that will get dovetails.. Ok, I can work with that. Marked the two for "inside" , "top" and Bottom...set one aside, and marked for tails... Need to hold this steady, and use a sharp pencil...then over to the bandsaw. I can see the lines better, and leave the lines during the cut... Marked for waste side of the lines. Then chop out what remains. Dry fit? Then repeat for the other side piece. Ok, I got out the Stanley 45..... Still had the #23 bead cutter installed....replaced that with a #12 straight cutter. reset the fence so a groove would be a 1/4" up from the bottom of the drawer. Cutter was ahair longer than the bead cutter, was cutting a bit too deep, reset that...set up a jig on the bench.. Just a way to hold things steady while the 45 works. Roughly cut a plywood panel.. dry fitted all the parts so far.. A might snug...plywood needs trimmed down a bit....was setting up to make the back of the drawer....could not find a board to use for it? Closed the shop for the day. Drove to the Blue Borg, and buy a 1 x 6 x4' just for the back...grrrr. Might try to finish this thing later today... Stay tuned..
March 11, 20188 yr Author Ok, build-a-drawer, part 2... Hauled that new board to the shop... Lovely, ain't it? Got these all pulled.. Not quite a pound, but.. Trimmed the plywood for a better fit. used that to figure how long a board I needed for the back of the drawer. Made a cross cut.. And set these aside, for now... reset the mitre saw for some dado work. sized the dado needed, squared the lines across, and made a few cuts.. Since I was walking right by the bandsaw, I rounded the back corners a bit. Dado is to "house" the back, tools and a jig to remove the waste Big chisel to chop out the waste, Stanley 39 to clean the dado's bottom..got both sides done...almost.. Centered in the dado....countersunk pilot holes. I do not rely just on glue here. Time to spread some glue, and grab most of the clamps in the shop... Diagonal to pull things square.... Bench is full of clamped up drawer....guess I get the rest of the day off? Will let the glue cure...tomorrow, maybe I take the clamps off, and clean things up. Need to install a couple knobs, too...stay tuned....
March 11, 20188 yr Popular Post With all that extra metal, maybe they are selling those boards by the pound!
March 13, 20188 yr Author MRI today....ruined a Monday afternoon...still have a huge headache...waiting for word on how the scan went... A few toys were used.. Clamped the drawer in the vise, and trimmed the dovetails. Laid the drawer on it's top..marked a line to show the middle of the back board. Used a large square to mark this...then a few screws.. One in the center, and one halfway to each side....groove will hold the edges. I don't trust nails... Ok, how do you make a knot...vanish? Well, I drilled a hole, right through the center of the knot...then a bolt and some glue.. Right before this knob was installed..I transferred the location to the other end of the drawer, so both knobs are the same.. Starting to think a coat of Golden Oak, and a couple coats of shellac...might dress this up.. Need to take this over to the drill press.. THIS one. Not much good for anything else..might as well make the plugs from this.. Cuts a 3/8" tapered plug. Maybe tomorrow, if the head feels better...I can cut a bunch of plugs, and install them. Stay tuned..

That would definitely make that drawer front stand out and give the overall unit a warm glow. Take 2 or 3 ibuprofen and call it a day. Praying for good MRI results.
