I recently saw a disparaging remark (can't remember exactly where) which implied that I'm doing my table saw blade storage all wrong. I have a 10" Craftsman (flex drive) saw and the Shopsmith Mark V/500. When I bought the Shopsmith the blades were all thrown together in the bottom of a cardboard box except for the one which was mounted on the machine. I threw the rusted ones out, one (carbide rip blade) was worth sharpening and is still wrapped in plastic from the sharpener, an 8" fine tooth plywood steel blade was not sharpenable but still appears to have some life in it, I have the 10" steel combination blade which came on the Shopsmith, and I've purchased a…

Well I have been slowly putting together, yet another shop. As always, I have to share the garage with other stuff like bikes, the gym, and random crap. However, I have been able to build anything and everything I have wanted, or that my wife has wanted. I am in the process of upgrading some equipment to include a larger bandsaw, an oscillating spindle sander, and I recently just upgraded my lathe. I also have a few pieces of equipment that I need to acquire, like a jointer, planer, and a router table of some kind. I can't believe I have went this long with those tools. Other than that, I can pretty much build anything I want, which has been super nice. If I could ju…

OK, Patriots, once again I'm looking for guidance. I have my basement shop studded out, and starting the wiring. I'm looking for suggestions before proceeding. Two of the walls are the concrete foundation walls with no studding. There is one small basement window. It's 13' x 22' (so it's basically a one car garage area,) with spray foam in the ceiling and acoustic suspended ceiling tiles for sound and some dust control. The walls will also be insulated for soundproofing. Getting 8 switched LED lights (thanks, Gunny) on one circuit (with the rest of the basement) and two 110 circuits for the power - one for each of the 22' foot walls. There are more av…

I decided to by pass the ballast in all my fluorescent light fixtures. I put t8's in the shop in 1999 and now a few of the ballast are wearing out so this is a good up grade and remove the ballast with more bright lights for these old eyes... I read somewhere the led bulbs will last longer if there is no ballast. I did tell her to get a known brand....She did get GE's but she said on the box, that name right there, you won't be happy with where they were made!!!!! And as I was removing my clothes for my nightly shower I noticed the back brace as I was taking it off, made in China. Oh, for anyone interested if you are wanting to see what all the K…

At this point now its hurry up and wait on management. I just proposed to them a plan for a shop space that's roughly 10 foot 2 inches in length by 9 fee 3 inches in width I believe that's what I've measured out on the carport space. I've got a double driveway and a double carport with a shed. But the shed being too small I've wanted a bigger shop space to do work in even when I was into the blacksmithing stuff. I will have help for that if it gets approved which I don't think it will be too big of an issue as long as I still have a carport. Which this will allow for that. I'll have one side basically closed off of the driveway for the shop and one side for a car if…

For a few years I was using a 300 watt Halogen light in the garage / shop. Yesterday I replaced it with a 2 ft LED fixture. It's quite a bit brighter, and should use up less electricity. I'm thinking about moving the light up a little higher just to get it just a little more out of view because it is so blindingly bright, but first I want to see how hot the fixture gets after it has been on for a while, so I can determine how close I can get it to the rafters.

Well for a few weeks now I've been having a issue with my electrical wiring in my shop. When I used my table saw I could use it . But if I turned on the dust collector with it the breaker with flip off. If I used more than one thing at a time same effect. So I needed to have someone to come and put in a 220 outlet anyways so that I could use my new band saw. The guy I hired found that some of my old wiring was going bad and shorting out. So we ran a line from the house into my shop and installed a breaker box in my shop . Replaced most of the wiring because the guy who lived here before didn't have them grounded and some were really old and bad. So now hopefully I can get…

Ok so here goes a dirty shop y'all wanted to see and that is what you will get. I only totaly (or nearly totally) clean the shop once a year when I have the turning club in and this is not that time. In the middle of turning offering plates and have extra wood for that just in case. This is just inside the door. Door is on the right. Bookshelf converted to sales rack now is a drying rack. That multicolor unit on the left is salvaged cash drop boxes from drugstore tilled together and wheels added. Jet 1642 in the background and the backside of main turning station. Continue to the left now is the rest of the drying racks and stereo is behind th…

For those that haven't made the trip to my shop. I needed to get a LONG plank down to the shop, today....might as well follow me around.. Plank? Ceiling beyond the door is 7'. So..pick up the plank a bit...(hand held camera, sorry) head through this doorway, and when you reach the back door... Hang a right. Just past the stove there is a doorway.. That has a couple signs.. While trying to swing the 9' plank around...open this door.. Yeah, yeah,, ugly, circled item is a "header" in more ways than one...if you are standing on the 4th step from the bottom, it will whack you in your shoulder..or worse …

I have some oddities in my shop. I try to be as organized as I can and some of my organizational methods, ehem, are somewhat to be desired to say the least! I have for years stored the chuck key to my Rockwell Delta Drill Press in a location that I know where it always is, and it also serves a secondary purpose as well. Here is the my beloved Delta Rockwell Drill Press. And the place I keep the chuck key, the original chuck key that came with the drill press is here. Please tell me I am not the only one that has an oddity in the shop such as this. This gate keeper, errr I mean chuck key has served it's purpose there for a decade since I have had this particular dri…

Some of you older members of The Patriot Woodworker may remember my shop build from about 3 years ago. The project got put on hold for a couple of years due to the wifes, and mother in laws health issues and simply running low on funds to continue the project. I'm now finally getting back to the project. For the newer members, here are some before, & after photos of the project. I'll be posting more as I get things done.

I have a 2x4 truss ceiling in my garage spanning 21 feet. The ceiling joist portion of the truss seem very weak. I am concerned about adding insulation with such weakness. I'm considering spray foam but blown cellulose insulation is not out of the question. I am concerned the ceiling will not hold the weight. I have thought about block bracing (making a grid) the ceiling joist but I am not sure that will help the span wise strength of the joist. What say you?
