Hey Dan, it's an old Delta drill press, that is the back end of it, the moter. The other stuff hanging off it don't belong to it, it's just a convenient place to hang those hoses is all.

Trying to get around 42" +/- on the lathe centers for my shaker chair spindles, legs. I think Larry the best way to go about is to just track down a supplier for the tubes, and purchase a set of tubes 6" longer, that should do the trick.

I'd go with a bit extra to accommodate tooling length.

The link to the extended 10ER I posted in your other topic states that with a 12" extension you get 46" between centers not counting tooling. It might be different with your 520.

It's a very personal decision, how our shops transform and end up over time. My shop grew with tools and machinery over the course of 15 years, as I took on side jobs and did quite a bit of cabinet work for friends and occasional side customers for a few extra bucks. I turned out some beautiful work for folks from this mechanized shop, I whole lot to be proud of.

 

But priorities change, and desires too. In my life, in my mind, I wanted to minimalist, and I wasn't using the machines as much as I had in the past. My side jobs dried up out of choice, the home is in good shape so no need for the big stuff to fabricate cabinets and stuff for the home, and I wanted to take my woodworking more to the bench, and less to the machine. Over the past several years I have been in a quest to get back to basics, from the tree to finished work, by hand. I am diving into a whole new realm for me and I really love it.

 

But the main driver in my shop reorganization, was the safety of my wife. Our neighborhood has transformed over the years since we moved in back in 2001. When we moved here, it was 100 percent home ownership, pride of home, green lawns, cars in the driveways, well kept everything, the city paved our roads every other year, but over the last 10 years it's all declined in a pretty dramatic way. And I want my wife to be able to pull into our garage, safely, and close the door behind her at night. Don't get me wrong, we don't live in a war zone, but things have happened in our area, that has spurred my decision to make room in our garage, so love of my life can feel comfy when pulling in at night from a grocery outing, and not have to worry about getting out and walking around the home to the front door to a surprise of a homeless man leaned up against our wall.

 

I wish we could move, but we can't. It's not that easy. When I retire in about 6.5 years, we are moving, unless things take a dramatic change here, which I doubt will happen. I hate leaving this home, all three of our kids were raised in this home, it's the only home they know, when my wife and I bought it, it was supposed to be our dream home, and the last home we ever lived in, and we had dreamy visions of the kids as adults coming back with our grands and visiting, and reminiscing about the fall one of them took down the stairs, or where they had their first kiss with the boyfriend at the lemon tree in the back yard, or where our son would shoot hoops with dad in the side driveway, all those memories, and more, to share with their own kids about they home they grew up in. But hey, God drives this train, and whatever He has in store, we'll abide.

 

Man, I got to typing didn't I? Sorry folks, hey, ya'll have a great day ok. I am taking my son and some of my tax return to Bass Pro Shops and we are looking at Henry 22's today, been excited about the 22 magnum Henry has, I also want to try out the Henry 45-70 single shot!

 

Those clamps on the ceiling beam look awful painful if they drop....

I really feel for you and your family, John. It's gotta be so depressing to watch your neighborhood decline all around you. Maybe, hopefully, things will turn around over the next six or seven years.

We all know it has slowed down for me as well.Forced on dialysis and automatically disabled took me out of full time work and not much out there for part time cabinet makers with any real pay. A lttle here and there to keep a few bucks in the woodworking tool pocket. 

 

I too let side work get away over the years feeling working a 40 hr week had more gain with no stress. Now I've got eyes open full looking for some sort of side line that won't take too much out of me or put too much on me. 

 

I'm thinking now about a sign out front that says "part time remodeling and cabinetry"  Never know...

What if you engineered a 6"-10" extension for the tailstock piece.  Just have a piece with 4 holes in to accept the tubes.  Maybe out of a nice thick slab of hardwood.  I noticed Shopsmith has these but looks like even if welded rigid they wouldn't work but I thought to post them for you to see at this link.

I know what you mean about moving John. Since they put that 300+ home subdivision in behind us it's been a PITA.

There's been talk about widening the road in front of us to 3 lanes. WE Energies moved some natural gas lines back from the road a couple months ago, and lately (past week or so) they've been surveying along the highway. If they do widen it adding a lane and moving the turn lane, along with the ditch I think that would put the ditch into about the middle of our living room. We're only 36' off the edge of the existing road now. 

I have 27 months to go before this shop is done and we move across the ocean to Ukraine.
