That's a question we are often asked, especially when we are given a chunk of tree. It would seem, to others, this would be an easy inquiry to answer. Yet, we often have no idea what form is hidden withing the interior. Here's your chance to share your thought process when making a turning. Do you know what the outcome is supposed to be prior to starting, do you let the wood decide the outcome, some of both or something else? How do you get inspirations for your turnings? Please share your pictures. If you have images of the wood before starting, please share them as well. I'll start- Up until a few years ago, my turnings were all utilitarian. The end result of each was predetermined before the piece went on the lathe. A bowl, a platter, a rolling pin or a pepper grinder. Then, something happened along the way that I didn't expect. The piece of wood told me what it wanted to be. It was a piece of Manzanita given to me by a friend in return for a rolling pin. What an ugly piece of wood! What in the world could come from this?! I set that oddly shaped piece on the work bench. Walked by each day and studied it. Of course, it looked back at me and laughed! It got moved to different places in the shop but still it mocked me. OK, I'm gonna mount this on the lathe. Turned a waste block. Flattened what seemed to be the appropriate spot for mounting. That's when I saw the beautiful red interior. Something clicked. Mocking me- What was hidden inside- I called this one "Emerging From The Chrysalis" Hope you all will follow along and share your inspirations!

Just curious does everyone else save project idea photos like I do? And do you ever get around to making them? Yes I have made some of them. Sometime spent with my project photos might be time well spent. Hoping to stimulate interest and response!!

I wondered if I could make a more meaningful ornament and started with an idea in mind . A nativity portrayal small enough to be an ornament. I thought it same out nice and my wife is very happy with it

Now that I have a 10x12 building I can use for finishing can I get some ideas of what has worked well for those who have a dedicated room for such a purpose? What I have thus far is: Ventilation, 2700 cfm attic fan in the window. I think I am good, also have plenty of windows. Access if needed for 220 @40 amp electrical. Have 110 @20 amp for outlets and can easily access to suite my needs Access to water, drain I can make work but have nothing currently hooked up. I have a crawlspace I can use to add as needed. Mostly this is for quick clean up not washing brushes and rollers out. Have a place to handle that already. So I will be spraying in this space, compressor requirements for a small spray gun run in at 6CFM @40 psi. Thinking a 25 gallon compressor should handle this well. Plumbing in from the shop compressor while possible is more than 70 feet away. Not really wanting to go that way. Any input is welcome.

Sometimes it really pays off to having so many good friends "in the business". I've been involved in the woodworking industry and have made many life-long friends over the past 35 years. Woodworkers for the most part are friendly and generous types in my experience. So I've been sitting on a piece of spalted maple for a very, very long time, waiting for the right project. We just introduced negative rake carbide cutters to our line here at EWT. I've honestly not been a big fan of turning resins / acrylics / man-made materials, always much preferred turning wood. When we tested these NR cutters I was very surprised what a difference they make in turning this man-made "stuff". So I finally found a great use for this piece of maple! I sent it off to my friend Heath Knuckles, and he transformed this piece of wood into some very cool hybrid blanks. If you are not familiar with Heath and his work, here is a link to one of his projects: So Heath took my piece of maple... and sent these back to me.... Now I just have to wait for my lathe to come back from a trade show to spin a few of these!

I put the card in the printer and am starting a new project. Never done a motorcycle before so...... Never know what I can make it look like till I try . Since it looks like a highway bike instead of a dirt bike it might end up with smooth tires. The picture is distorted making it hard to get a good idea of what is what. Did that mean I will be getting a two wheeler for my birthday????
