I landed this kit back early last winter. I've had a lot of things pop up keeping me away from my projects but was able to get started yesterday. It's something that is on my "to do" list. Starting at the very basic level here but we'll see what happens. I really need at least 6 ongoing projects to fit whatever mood I wake up in that day...this should put me back up to at least 5 kit is basswood,

We have a group of friends that has been meeting for quite a few years on Tuesday. We call the group Turning Tuesday. One of the older friends is more of a chip carver than a turner. He likes the boxes I have been making lately and asked me if I could make one out of basswood so he can chip carve it. The lid is Purple Heart because that is what he wanted. Here is the box, 8” tall and 5” in diameter. I can’t wait to see what he carves on it.

For Christmas I made birdhouses to stand among the mushrooms. I used the larger Linden/Basswood branches from my tree out back. They stood about eight inches tall. After Christmas I played with some short pieces and made Gnome home doors for them. Didn't drill for the birds in these. I put a door in the one I kept for myself too. I made the doors and frames as an assembly and let them into the turnings. I found I would never make it as a carver. Can't explain how the bark sticks to them but never lost a single section of it during the turning and carving.

I finally have some free time and want to do a seashell carving. Here's the original and I'm not sure of how to start this carving. I'll do some "thinking time" before starting. Maybe get my lathe involved before carving begins? Of course, basswood and gold leaf when finished?

I've now got some downtime and wanted to do something different for my next carving/gilding project. I want to carve this whale, in 3 dimensions, and mounted proud of a rectangular plaque. It should be 12-18" long, with all of the detailed carved into it.

On Oct 19 the Wednesday's Wisdom had a video on mushrooms and I swear there was a video on a natural edge wine glass but I can't find it. I had some time to play and decided to give the mushrooms a shot. I have a Linden/Basswood tree out back that drops up to 3" diameter limbs at times. This year when cleaning up I decided to bring some in to give them a try on the lathe. Turns out they hold their bark like it was glued on. Found out turning a mushroom and grabbed the biggest limb and turned a wine glass. Tear out was a big problem with the Basswood but sharp tools proved to be the answer again.

Our daughter and son-in-law have just purchased their first house in Springs, NY, south of Montauk. Their street address starts with just the #5 and then the street name. I thought that I could give them a house warming present, with a carving of just the #5, and it will be painted/gilded. Here's the start of the rough carving/layout for this project. The number carving is in basswood and the second disk of wood is pine, and the use of it will be apparent later on. Again, this is just a rough carving...... finishing will take place later.

I have just about filled up both sides of mt practice block. I can see some progress but not doing anything I'd be willing to put my name on just yet. This is one of my early efforts. I had done maybe 10 sets by this time. Still pretty rough. This one is a iittle better and to my eye I can see some progress. Did this one just this evening. I would guess by now I've done at least 500 of these three corner chip cutouts. This is the best one so far. It's funny, I'll do one and think, "that's pretty good". Then, I do a few more and look at them as a unit and wonder, what was I looking at? There is so much junk and rough cuts. Getting better I think but still a long way to go. Steve
