October 26, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Finally got some carving done but chipped out a piece of the pectoral fin. This was glued in and I'll finish everything in the next couple of days. Carving almost done.... some minor carving/sanding to be done before I can work on the plaque.

It's a simple matter of using a thin-bladed scraper, or wide chisel, to carefully "pop" off the glue block. Also, you can leave the glue block/carving in the vise and just "twist" off the carving, leaving the glue block in the vise. Clean up of the paper is then done at my belt sander(turned off) by rubbing the paper side on the belt(80 grit).
October 27, 20223 yr Author Popular Post Carving complete(both sides) and ready for the sealing, sanding, sealing, sanding, gesso, glue(sizing), and gold leaf. Then it's onto the plaque, painted/gilded, to mount the whale in "suspension" above the plaque.

And just this morning, I was imagining a framed whale tail sculpture many feet across, coming out of a wall in a large, high-ceilinged exhibition hall. Not full-fluke, maybe ⅔ scale. 15' across, projecting from the wall 10'. Step One: Find someone else to pay for it. Step Two: Find someone who wants it.
