September 23, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Roh-kay, Raggie...I need to clear away this space.. Stuff on the floor can head up to the Fire Pit...I need to clean off the top of the tablesaw...to set this thing on.. So I can clamp it down, sand, and fill, and level any and all high spots...flip it over, rinse and repeat...then I am going to go all over it, with a ruler..and draw up a CORRECTED cutting list...so that Door #2 doesn't have any gaps.. Existing doors: Have a bunch of "issues" going on.. Doors are falling apart, hinges are rusted up.....that 1 x 3 trim goes from floor to ceiling...and has more layers of paint than the USS Washington's hull.. As for the hinges...the question being will be HOW to remove them... Because one of the leaves is buried under that trim piece...may just cut through the "barrel" of the hinge, as close to the trim, with OUT touching it...as I am replacing the hinges with better ones.. Door #2: Already had Raised Panels made for it...and one Top, or Bottom Rail...and 2 stiles for the outside of the Door.. No joinery nor grooves...yet... Was trying to find a plank in the shop to use... Thinking about the Middle/Lock Rail...but..center section of this .."thing"... "That there's Kindling, back where I come from.." One end was not too hateful.. Just about 6" too short...maybe save for a Box Project, Later? The other end? IF I stop just short of the FUBAR area..I can get almost 16" in length... Middle rail comes out to 3/4" x 4-1/2" x 15"....this section is 3/4" x 6" x 16"...should be able to use it, after a wee bit of a trim? May need a Lumber run, this week..we'll see what he has... Stay tuned
September 24, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Ok..milled a few parts.. And decided to use a one piece center stile...thats 2 less Mortises to chop....however..the joint between it and the Lock Rail will be a half lap joint.. Floor has been cleaned up, and hauled upstairs... May wait a few days, before I haul the full trash can up here... Tuesday: 2 trips to the shop, and 2 trips for errands. Either the top or the bottom rail ( undecided as to which it will be..) got a couple beads made.. As Door #1 is also being worked on... Show face was a bit rough, so..Stanley No. 3 smoothed it down a bit "Difficult Grain"? Not a problem...even for the bead cutter.. Same board...I also had a Bead Cleaner.. As it's cutter matched the one in the Stanley #45...this is the Lock Rail. Top and bottom ones are done, bead wise.. However..that center stile....needed an edge jointed... Straightedge to check...board also had a slight twist to it..we have ways I also had a knot to work around...( look right under that hold-down/cleat) As the other face was even worse... Planes didn't seem to even notice it...and this was the last bead to be milled.. I can set most of this aside...and start on some joinery.. needed a rail to double check the gauge...angle had slipped a bit.. Need to do this cut 4 times...then do a half lap... Stay tuned...

September 25, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Thought today I would try a few ideas out... Bandsaw, instead of handsaw...meh...still had to shoot it.. Had about as many waves as the Irish Sea.... Nice and flat... Had thought about using the bandsaw to make the Half Lap part... Hmmmm, decided to at least try the fence... Wasn't much better...wound up using a plane, again.. Cross cut was on the Mitrebox... Saw down to the layout line...at least at 90 degrees, there is a locking tab... Spent a while...getting these 4 turned into half laps...Angle is 62 degrees, BTW... However..for the other half of the joint...I could use the mitrebox...set to 28 degrees....but, there isn't a way to lock it in place...again, saw to the lay out lines.... Had to use the Disston D8 rip saw...and even it wanted to wander around...lots of fiddling to get things to fit together...flat.. Was right at the 2 hour time limit...legs were complaining...that mark on the stile is from my sweaty hands One corner dry fitted up...only 3 more to go...Might give that Japanese Rip saw a try-out, later.. Stay tuned..

September 27, 20241 yr Author Popular Post Heading back to the shop in a little bit...Yesterday was mainly handsaws.. Problem with this set up? Hard to see how far down the cut at the back is.....28 Degrees setting, and now way to lock it in place...plus, having to turn things around.. To do the other corner... Next saw? Gave this a try out, and it gave me a work out...does NOT cut any faster than my Disston No. 4 Backsaw...Again..more plane and chisel work.. 2nd corner done..spent 90 minutes in the shop, BTW.. Finally got the LAST corner fitted...Then set all the parts aside... To wait until I get the Router Table set up to plough a few grooves...need to replace one of the fences.. As the low fence had started to get a curve to it... Today? LOTS of grooves to mill, after that? We'll see.. Stay tuned..
September 27, 20241 yr Author Just got back upstairs from the shop...and soaked clear through...and issues with toes cramping up... Need to edit a few photos....back when they are done...
September 28, 20241 yr Author Popular Post New guide fence... Yes, Router Tables do make a mess...and are LOUD.. Test the fit... Something like this.. This will be the inside view...anyway, got all the grooves done.. Needed to lay out for a half lap joint.. This is the Lock Rail part...need to remove inside the red lines....Tablesaw to do some "Nibbles" Will need a wee bit of clean up? Just a tad...repeat for the center stile..and do a dry fit... Plan for later today? Need to mill 1/4" tenons...and chop the matching Mortises.. Stay tuned..
September 29, 20241 yr Author Roh-kay, Raggie...all 4 tenons were milled on the tablesaw.. Then the miters were cut with the bandsaw...used these to lay out where to cut for the mortises at.. Used the Stanley No. 77 Mortise gauge to lay out the mortise.. 1/4" wide chisel to chop out the mortise...dry fit.. Meh...needs to be better..more dry fits... That's better...worked on the other stile, and tried to assemble a larger dry fit.. I tried to pull the end down...I could get one, but not the other..something in the middle was ..."off".. Yep, those 2 areas needed work...got that fixed...then the top and bottom rails... Left corner could be better... Where the center stile met this rail...needed that Japanese Flush Cut Saw for a better fit at the miters Today, IF the Dungeon Creek don't rise...will be a sanding day...to get all the parts ready for a glue-up, later.. Stay tuned..
