Popular Post steven newman
As the "old" doors were looking rather bad.. Flat, plywood panels...someone had tried to make a bifold out of the bottom 2...hinges are junk...jambs are chewed up...and these do not match the rest of the cabinets in the Bathroom.. So..Moose & Squirrel Delivery LTD dropped of page #1 of The Plan... For one of the 2 bottom doors,,,details.. Going with Raised Panels...for a Frame & Panel Door....since the main doors to the Bathroom .... Are also 4 panel Frame & Panel doors Decided to at least mill the raised panels first...from a pair of 7/8" x 9-3/4 x 61" planks.. Need 16 raised panels, for all 4 doors Means I had to haul those two 1 x 10s to the shop..and cut both down to 30" lengths.. Circular saw tried...but, between holding the saw and support 31" of cut-off...we can do better.. Then trim the nasty stuff off the bad ends.. Handsome, isn't he? next..I needed to rip these 4 slabs down a bit.. Quote Then run the cut-off through, as both were tapered a bit..stack these aside for a bit.. While I reset the saw...need to cut these exactly in the center... And stack these aside for a bit.. Live edge MIGHT still get used, we'll see. Reset the saw quite a bit.. Raised the blade all the way up, lay the Zero Clearance Overly over the blade...tilt the blade 15 degrees...add the rip fence at 1/2" away from where the blade comes up through...make sure the fence is square..we are able ready? Stand each blank vertically on an end, run the blank through, rotate 90 degrees, run a long edge through ( straight through, do not pause nor slow down,,you will get burn marks) rotate, run the other end through, and finally..run the other long edge through..repeat the above 15 times.. And wind up with 16 Raised Panels...which will get a rebate all the way around on the "inside" face... Next up? Stiles...hauled 2 planks to the shop, trimmed the bad ends until each plank was 45" long...then, rip right down the center.. And wind up with 4 stiles...clamped up to keep them as flat as I can...will be part of a Road Trip...taking them and 6 other planks to a Friend of mine's Barn...where he has a 12" Delta Lunch Box Planer...as all of them are way too thick...need all to be planed down to 3/4" thick... We have work to do.. Page #2... And, I am waiting on Page #3... Stay tuned.. Handfoolery, Harry Brink, Fred W. Popular Post steven newman
Page #3 arrived... Detailing how the center of the doors are to go together... back from the Barn, hauled two planks to the shop...needed 3 rials...and ripped to 5" width.. 3/4" x 5" x 19"...set those aside, for now... What was left...needed a wee bit of work... Getting rid of the barky stuff..two blanks worth.. Final width was just under 3" when done... These 2 are to be the center stiles...cleared the bench, and jigged up to mill a few beads.. Stanley No.45, with the #23 Bead cutter...each edge gets a bead.. The 5" wide rails also get beaded.. Had to stop every now and then.. Otherwise the plane get too clogged up... Stopped for the day..before I got the these 4.. May have to jig up a different way to hold these stiles......may set up over on the tablesaw? Once I get it cleaned off... When the beads are all milled, then I can start on a bit of joinery? Mitered Half Laps...should be "Fun" to do...? Wherever one bead meets another bead, there will be a miter joint,, Should be fun to do? Stay tuned.. DuckSoup, Fred W. Popular Post steven newman
All the bead work is done, for a while...spent 105 minutes in the shop, today... Tablesaw? Tablesaw?? Bandsaw wasn't much cleaner....we have ways.. As the Miter Box & Saw weren't set up to cut all the way down....this will have to do, today...4 stiles needed cross cut for final length.. Had 2 teeth that needed "stoned", as they were grabby in the cut....I also rubbed the blade with the candle a bit... Seemed to do just fine. These were the easy things...next... Needed to make this cut..on each end of 2 stiles.. Frame saw to make that cut..then into the vise for a minute.. Smoothed out the rough saw marks...then some lay out work.. Using that marking gauge...then, make a stopped cut.. Down to the layout lines... Then stand this up in the end vise.. And saw until I reached the "stop cut"... And catch the waste when it pops off..wide chisel the pare where the plane can not reach.. Busy bench? Plane also acting as a smoother.. A few rough spots to clean up...repeat the above 3 times.. A pair of stiles for ONE door are done, for now... Tomorrow's Tasks? Is to mate the stiles to the top and bottom Rails..should be a LOT of fun.. Stay tuned..( 105 minutes IN the shop, 45 minutes to edit the photos...) lew, Gerald, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 3 others 5
Popular Post steven newman
Next cuts were a bit easier to do, once I did a bit of math... Other cuts were at 63 degrees..so..I can set the Miter box to 27 degrees.. When in doubt, use the cut off.. Since there isn't a "Lock out tab" I have to hold things in place, until after the cut gets going.... Fun part was getting rid of the waste...Frame saw wanted to wiggle a bit too much...so.. Once this big guy gets started cutting...does not take very long,,,was trying to use as much of the 28" long saw blade as I could..that shelf with the plane...was clean before the saw got going...took very little work with a chisel. to clean things up.. Set up a router table to mill grooves.. This turned out to be just a test piece...needed a second fence and a Start and a STOP! mark.. Because, I did not want the grooves to run all the way through.. As they would show.. As for that Router Table? That is B&D's Clone of a DeWalt No. 610....all metal, with a 1/4" collet... That brings things up to date for Sunday...stay tuned, as I worked 90 minutes IN the shop today...too! steven newman
Ok..this first photo will be a bit FUZZY....taking photos without a tripod just don't work all that well I tried a dry fit of the outside door frame parts...seemed to fit up well enough....until I started checking the interior parts...stiles and rail..did not fit...so The center Stiles were too narrow..cut 2 new ones the correct width...and length...needed and extra 1/2" to account for two 1/4" tenons...the center rail? was TOO wide..ripped a new one to correct width and again the correct length...remember this photo? well, I needed to add a1/4" more for a tenon. On each end... Ok. THAT was out of the way, for a bit...Raised Panels...need a rebate milled all the way around... Set up the tablesaw.. And make a 3/8" deep cut on all 4 sides..times 16 panels..then reset the saw and.. And remove the waste... set 4 aside for a bit. . Router table to mill the grooves into the Long Stiles...as for the "NEW & Improved" parts..they got a bead detail.. So, was a busy day...today? Yeah, you could say that... Stay tuned.. steven newman
More "puttering around" on a Tuesday afternoon.. Since all the grooves have been milled..needed a few tenons milled..then... Mark out for the miter cuts... Bandsaw was a bit busy, yesterday...between the 6 tenons, there was also this cut-out.. Then use the Mortise gauge to lay out the Mortise.. Chop down enough for a test fit..."Crumb Work" needed on the right end... Just a wee bit of fine tuning yet....then one will be done.. Only 5 more to do...will see how today turns out..... Stay tuned.. DuckSoup, Grandpadave52 and lew
Popular Post steven newman
Have one more Mortise to chop and fit, today... Yesterday..Got all 4 Raised panels fitted into the grooves... Used both this and the Ward's No. 78 to thin the rebates for a better fit into the grooves.. The #78 was set up for across the grain...Craftsman #3720 was for with the grain.. Then the rough sawn inside face was planed smooth.. Then flip over... Show face also got planed smooth...repeat 3 more times... Parts are piling up One more Mortise to do..and then MAYBE a Glue-up? We'll see..might be some cussing going on? Stay tuned... lew, Grandpadave52, Harry Brink and 2 others
Popular Post steven newman
Laundry Detail this morning...so.. Chopped and fitted the last mortise joint for THIS door ( out of the 4 I need to make..) Which means.. When I have to get up on the shop 2-step Stepladder to use a mallet...trying to close up most of the gaposis... Repaired 2 places where the groove broke out...will correct THAT "Problem with the next 3 doors.. Letting this "Thing" sit a day, or 2....need to go all over it...taking notes...as to what got change in the plan, and what NEEDS changed.. Then, sand, fill, sand some more...and set aside, for now...while I get a start on Door #2.. Stay Tuned.. Fred W.
