The Media Room

Today we finished the concept of the media room. This is going to be a long one. I am expecting this to take me at least 2-3 months. The whole room including a major portion of the ceiling will be in black walnut. This is one of my favorite woods to work with so it’s going to be fun along with more than a  few challenges. It includes making and hanging three doors, one of which she wants inlayed. The cabinet doors will be a combination of black walnut and Birdseye Maple. I am starting with the cabinet that houses the TV and going from there.

Managed to get the drawers installed yesterday. Now I can focus on the ceiling and get the blanks out of the shop.  Paul

I’m continuing on with the ceiling. It’s slow going but I’m getting there. I’m a little over half done at this point. This is about as boring as it gets.  Paul

We are continuing with the ceiling tiles as much as we can. The black walnut that we bought locally is turning out to be very nice stuff. I bought this all in the rough so I no idea what it would look

Managed to get the lower cabinet parts cut out and ready for assembly. This is the first time I have used the Shaper Origin to actually cut the dados and shelf pin holes. It was an interesting experience but appears to have worked out.

Look up Shaper Origin on YouTube.  Those strips of dominoes are how it reads the surface.

The router has a camera that reads the domino tape and by doing that orients itself to the workpiece. It’s very accurate. It’s within a few thousandths of an inch. It’s essentially a hand held CNC router. The router is the easy part. Mastering the software to do the computer drawings was the tough part for me. I am using Fusion 360 which for me has had a long learning curve. My son is a great tutor which has made it a lot easier. Without his help I’m not sure it would work for me as a woodworking tool. At this point I am fairly comfortable with the whole concept but there were a lot of very frustrating hours getting it all down.

leave enough space for a later TV.  the replacement may not be the same size as the one you have in mind.

I generally place the TV in a large face frame that will give the ability to adjust the opening size later down the road. The face frame and the TV are mounted on a cage with full extension slides so it can be pulled out for repairs etc.

Paul I have heard large screen TV's in a built in cabinet generally has a shorter life because of the heat build up. I had started to build a cabinet with a lift to lower the TV in the cabinet when not being used and was advised to put some kind of a blower system in to keep things cooler. Just a thought ...And since I couldn't afford to wave by-by I dropped that idea...

I am in awe. Mostly that they have such LARGE TV's.  Bet that is nice when watching a movie.

Myself I thought upgrading to a 32 inch monitor was nice.  Don't own a TV, haven't watched since 2006.  :D

Busy day today. I got the carcass assembled except for the back. As I said before this is my first cabinet build using the Shaper Origin. It went very well once the computer work was completed. The assembly was very quick. I am used to cutting out the components and then hand fitting them during assembly. There was no need for any adjustments. Everything fit perfectly. Everything perfectly square and the dados were an exact fit. End product is great. I’m just not sure this is my kind of woodworking. I guess time will tell.

Man that is coming along nicely.  Gotta ask though.  What is this a conspiracy between you and @steven newman ????

You two get more work done in 2 hours than I can jam in a month of Sundays!

In response to potential heat issues Smallpatch what I do is design the cabinet to be open from the bottom and top. The top speaker cabinet is open to the tv so the heat flows up and out through the speaker cloth. The cabinets are also fairly deep which allows for better airflow.

Well it’s Thanksgiving and for the first time in memory it is just my wife and I for dinner. 2020 is so bizarre. Bu this too shall pass. We decided to move along with the project and finished up the large vertical panels so that means tomorrow we start assembling in the room finally.
