November 18, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Ok.....Day 15...another wonderful 3 hours in the shop.. Spent half of it working on the lid..underside needed planed flat.. Then a test fit to see how it would sit... Not all that great...went back, and worked on the "underside a bit more... Decided the underside looked better than the topside did... Didn't like the sharp, square corners, used a jig.. To lay out a curve...to be ground round.. And, since Router #1 still had the cove bit... I think that will do for the lid part of this build..... These are parts to a box. wide panel needed resawn, though.. And planed flat....needed a support to hold the bottom of the box.. Just a 1 x1 screwed and glued in place. Box bottom gets a couple notches, for a better fit.. Which leaves cutting a sliding dovetail... The guide is actually the front of the box...had to cut a dovetail "tail" to fit in this socket... Bottom is glue to the front of the box, and onto the support strip... Back to that resaw....edges needed jointed.. A handle was cut out...to fit into the cut-out in the box's front.. All that is left..besides sanding this smooth.. Would be a couple hinges? Tomorrow being PayDay Means I need to go out shopping, and bill paying...need hinges, Cedar lining, a can of stain..usual stuff Stay tuned

November 18, 20205 yr Popular Post My wife says that I have a router fetish. Let’s see: 1 in the table, 2 Bosch plunge routers, one Ryobi plunge, 1 Mikita fixed and 2 Bosch palm routers = 7

November 19, 20205 yr Author Popular Post November 18, 1972...a date the will live in Infamy......48 years ago, I got married....one of the Grandsons bought us Pizza for supper, last night, to celebrate. Checked out the piano hinge....was a bit too long..needed 26"...it was 36" long. Tested the stain out on some Ash scrap....meh, not a fan of "Early American" colour...but, that seems to be her choice. Box lid was a bit rough...planed the faces smooth, spokeshaved the curved edges, dremeled out the burn marks.... Will need a rebate to house the piano hinge. Need to chop out for the box's lid hinges.....and install the Cedar lining, hmmmm, before or after the finish? may go ahead and stain the insides, allow that to dry....THEN install the Cedar.

November 19, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Ok...after a Cardio Workout, ( hauled a 50 pound bag of dog food from the trunk of the van, into the kitchen..)was time for a bit of shoptime.. Cleaned up this lid a bit...and marked where to put a pair of hinges.... After that chisel had chopped things down a bit, the "other" kind of router took over,,so the hinge can be installed barrel down.. Needed a pilot hole drilled for the screws. Screw were a bit too long...shortened them on the grinder, with a new point..1st hinge.. Turn the lid end for end, and do the other hinge....lid is ready...need to get the chest down onto the floor.. And sitting where I can work.. Installed so the hinges are flush with the top of the side's edge...and... It will even close...which leaves a different router to buzz an area for the piano hinge to sit down in...and then the hinge can be installed. Had to get out the VIX bit, to do pilot holes for all them screws...I was going to use the Yankee push drill..until it snapped the tip off of a bit....was able to yank the broken end back out. Ok...move this mess over to the tablesaw... Earlier, I tried out the stain on some scrap of Ash... Called Early American, by Minwax....not my choice, but it matches what she already has.......decided to at least stain the inside of the chest... Everything BUT the plywood bottom panel....brush on, wipe back off... Have a box of Cedar.. That once I am finished "Finishing" the insides of the chest...I'll lay a layer of these Cedar planks down on the bare plywood.. and that will do it, for today.... Stay tuned
November 20, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Main lid has been installed today....insides of the chest now have a coat of clear gloss poly, still no Cedar installed..... laundry detail.....stained the outsides, lid and all...except the underside of the lid....brush on, wipe off... Trying to find a way to take some PIP pictures....let alone as a Project....since the chest is sitting on top of the tablesaw..... Stay tuned....have to go check on the dryer, to see IF it is done...
