Please don't forget that we are in the midst of our annual fundraiser/raffle. There are some awesome prizes to be had!

Our Patriot Turners-

@Ron Altier created some entirely different type of ornaments than he usually does. Even though they weren't done on the lathe, I think they deserve a spot here in our forum.

Ron describes the process in his post-

@AndrewB is putting his Wen benchtop lathe through its paces! He is turning another candle holder from a glued up blank

For The Newbies-

Tim Yoder is often referenced here. He has a way of making learning enjoyable. Tim has posted a video where he answers questions from those who follow his videos. There are some excellent tips included.

Ever wonder what is the best type of finish for your turning project? Woodworker's Journal made available an article, from Ernie Conover, describing several popular turning finishes-

Woodturners Wonders has lots more on their site than just items for sale. I found this helpful article on choosing sandpaper-

The information is primarily centered around their own brands but general enough it can be applied to other makers as well.

Expand Your Horizons-

Most of us are familiar with segmented turnings. Lots of pieces, precise angles, tedious glue-ups. This young man has taken it to a whole other level! As you watch the video, check out the shop made jigs!

New Turning Items-

We previously mentioned Woodturners Wonders. They have a special sale on their sandpaper. If you need any, these are some pretty good prices-

Everything Else-

Rick Turns video list from last week-

Well, that piece of spalted maple will no longer mock me. Not because I've made something of it but rather it is one of those pieces headed for the burning pit!

Just too soft and punky inside.

I've turned my attention to a small piece of black locust. It is the leftovers from a larger log that was used for a bowl.

Centering up the faceplate.

Enlarging the screw holes- not too deep!

Four screws should do it.

Laying out the recess for the chuck jaws- shop made gauge for tenons and recesses

Create the dovetail. Cheap old tool converted to dovetail cutter

On the chuck. Tail stock in place for safety.

Outside shaped. Used the Easy Wood Tools rougher with the R2 cutter. Smooth!

Starting to hollow out. Who says carbide tools don't make curly shavings!!! Note the tail stock is still engaged in the turning. Really adds stability during the hollowing phase.

Sam Angelo's depth gauge. Sides about 1/8" thick, bottom around 3/16"

Life got in the way at this point. When I looked today the bowl has warped. There was still moisture in the locust. That's gonna make sanding a little more difficult.

Safe turning and stay healthy

Great post @lew  Haven't done anything on the lathe this week except make a dowel out of mahogany to fix a table leg.  Had lots of other stuff to do though.:D

Great post Lew. Nice job on the bowl, yes we need to budget our time to get it done. Got several ready for finish , now to decide on the finish.

Thanks for the post Lew.  Bowl looks great and you did that saplted piece justice.  It was too far gone.

Lew, as always, another great post.  It is also great to see that lathe being put to use.  It still looks very new.

The education you gave is great.  That piece of walnut surprises me that it did not fly off or at least throw chunks.

Also, thanks for all the links.  It was fun exploring.

@lew  thank you sir

That is a great image for cutting a tennon for the chuck.  I'll have to give that a go at some point.
