Ok, can of varnish was checked....less than 1/2 a quart....so...went out and bought a new can of Amber Shellac, instead. We'll see how that goes, after a while...maybe after supper? Grandson is cooking dinner, tonight....

July 24, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Ok, for those complaining about too small of pictures...here is a teaser of a PIP.... And, after a second coat on the top...... Couple more coats, and I can start on the Hutch... Edited July 24, 20196 yr by steven newman
July 24, 20196 yr Great job. Blood and all. That amber shellac is just the ticket. Do you think it'll hold up with use? Of course, shellac is forgiving. Edited July 24, 20196 yr by Gene Howe
July 24, 20196 yr Wow Steve! You're making me feel bad that my "Repurposed Junque" project is taking so long.
July 25, 20196 yr why not a KD bolt and nut in the rear corners if you want the two pieces attached (firmly), but still removable?
July 25, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Hutch will be a bit heavy. Ok....The Plan...... Tower has it's space, keyboard will sit in front of the monitor....might be enough toom for the keyboard to slide back under the Monitor's shelf? Cubbies up the right side...shelves or drawers? Or, both? A start on a "Cut List".. Have three 4/4 x 6 x 6' planks for sides and shelves.. 2 on the left are 4/4' the one on the right is 3/4" thick. Top has a live edge most of the way along the one edge....plank has a slight curve to it...but has decent enough grain ( no knots!) Have already marked things out for a cut line, and laying out the uprights.. The 1 x 8 is a bit too long... It's a start, at least....thinking that fancy piece of plywood could be used as a back....we'll see.. Stay tuned..
July 27, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Roh-Kay, Raggy....quitting time while the dryer does it's thing....Top shelf has been trimmed for length, and the edges jointed Non-live edge. Stanley No.8....when I then worked on the live edge side... All the bark was removed...wide chisel then the spokeshave Spokeshave also did a round-over, of sorts... Then the front corners were trimmed a bit... Then the spokeshave carried the round-over on around....set the top shelf aside... Where it will be out of the way....One plank made 3 blanks for the uprights...18-3/4" long... handsome, ain't they? Extra length to allow for trimming. Not a square nor straight spot to be found...we have ways.. Joint both edges, and hope they are parallel ( they weren't, tablesaw to fix that), and since there was some cupping going on.. Millers Falls #14 did a bit of scrub work, either to remove the high middles, or the high edges...then.. Sargent #408 to smooth things down...Was one upright short,,,had to bring another plank to the shop.. One upright, and a few shelves.... One shelf for the tower to sit on, one shelf for the monitor to sit on. cut-offs were sorted through, trimmed for length.. 4 cubbyhole shelves, and the 4th upright....have to figure out the spacing for these....4 shelves into 18" =? Will figure out what joints to use, to attach all the parts...Maybe by then, the dryer will be done? Stay tuned..

July 27, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Stopped dados....to set up a router...first I have to remove an older bit... Router is an older DeWalt 610... Wrenches are what I could find that fit. 1/2" shanks, only. Bit is a 1/2" wide straight cutter. Yes, I do have a spare, just in case So...I'll set up the router guide, and run a dado almost all the way across, stopping about an inch or so back from the front edge. Router was a $5 yard sale find, a few years ago....may have to find a new base, someday? Stay tuned..
July 28, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Ok, skipped lunch, and hid in the shop, for a few hours....Router depth of cut was set to about 3/8"...laid out where the cuts were to go..and set up the router guide Was a bit hard to clamp to the bench...so i used the wing on the tablesaw, piece of pine scrap to keep from marking things... Also needed to know where to stop the dado at...and once a board was done, needed to square the ends of the dados.. With a chisel...top was cleaned up,,, Plan was to do all the dados, before the matching tenons...so.. Some, only needed one dado, but, I then had to match it's neighbor, so a shelf will set level. Others need to be offset a tad, otherwise things would get too thin.. was going along pretty good... Until I started on the cubbyhole area...dados were fine....crowded, but fine.. Figured I could do all the tenons...Tower shelf was fitted, monitor shelf was too...however, when the shelves for the cubby holes were set in,,, As the Great Goblin would say.."the truth, warts and all..." somehow these came up too short...threw these away, and remade 4 more shelves...went to dry fit..1/4" too long, now Redid one end, tenons came up 1/16" too long...FINALLY got everything to fit.. Everything fits Even did a dry fit for the entire Hutch, to see how many clamps I'll need.. Hmmm, going to take a bunch....may do the glue up in sections... Cubby hole will get a plywood back, need a rebate for that. Thinking I may build a door for over the cubby holes... Wonder IF I need some counter-sunk Brass screws into the glue joints.. Maybe help out the end grain glue up thing. May head back to the shop, IF the back allows....run a rebate, maybe spread some glue? Stay tuned
July 29, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Went back down to the shop for a bit....Got the Cubby Hole Assembly all glued up standing as it will on the desk. Had a plywood scrap about the right width, just a little long... Glue and Brass nails... (saving the fancy plywood for something else..) Then, since I had a few extra clamps.. Glued the shelf for the tower to the uprights....2 clamps for the glue up, the other 3 were to pull things into square with the top shelf... Pulled inventory on long clamps...might have enough....need to glue the Monitor shelf to these two assemblies, AND everything to the top shelf... Boss has errands in the morning, then my left knee gets PT (Therapied) will see how I feel ( and walk) after that. besides, it is Monday, tomorrow.. Stay tuned
