Why not just hang it like a cabinet instead of attaching it to the desk?

Because there is a BIG picture window seat behind the desk...

Ok, can of varnish was checked....less than 1/2 a quart....so...went out and bought a new can of Amber Shellac, instead.  We'll see how that goes, after a while...maybe after supper?   Grandson is cooking dinner, tonight....

Yeah okay a simple solution???  Where would the challenge be in that.  Besides this needs to get more difficult, Steven's sandbagging...:JawDrop:

And, after a second coat on the top......

Couple more coats, and I can start on the Hutch...

Great job. Blood and all. That amber shellac is just the ticket. Do you think it'll hold up with use? Of course, shellac is forgiving.

Finally to the result and what a result. Looks like a classic heirloom .

The desk is really neat!!

Great Job!!

Wow Steve! :JawDrop:

You're making me feel bad that my "Repurposed Junque" project is taking so long. :WhoMe:

why not a KD bolt and nut in the rear corners if you want the two pieces attached (firmly), but still removable?

Tower has it's space, keyboard will sit in front of the monitor....might be enough toom for the keyboard to slide back under the Monitor's shelf?  Cubbies up the right side...shelves or drawers?   Or, both?  A start on a "Cut List"..B)

Stopped dados....to set up a router...first I have to remove an older bit...B)

1045160685_Routersetupoldbit.JPG.5df4b2356924f4aa69afb57e00808ef5.JPG

Router is an older DeWalt 610...:OldManSmiley:  Wrenches are what I could find that fit.

1184044051_RoutersetupDeWaltrouter.JPG.9243218f5d10b03488520a714b9d0c2b.JPG

1/2" shanks, only.   Bit is a 1/2" wide straight cutter.   Yes, I do have a spare, just in case

So...I'll set up the router  guide, and run a dado almost all the way across, stopping about an inch or so back from the front edge. :ChinScratch:

1274808767_Routersetupnewbit.JPG.8853752eaafb6850076aa3da17e999a0.JPG

Router was a $5 yard sale find, a few years ago....may have to find a new base, someday?:OldManSmiley:

Stay tuned..:cowboy:

Ok, skipped lunch, and hid in the shop, for a few hours....Router depth of cut was set to about 3/8"...laid out where the cuts were to go..and set up the router guide

462248443_ComputerDeskHutchdadolayout.JPG.7324a738020b2cace77e8bf7b14dd148.JPG

Was a bit hard to clamp to the bench...so:ChinScratch:

2080920038_ComputerDeskHutchrouterguideset-up.JPG.f4add9ad22f0933d593e756b4affe4a7.JPG

i used the wing on the tablesaw, piece of pine scrap to keep from marking things...

1110030757_ComputerDeskHutchdadocut.JPG.7e59fd4bd0c5c8ffbef2fd3803504751.JPG

Also needed to know where to stop the dado at...and once a board was done, needed to square the ends of the dados..:WonderScratch:

1489601080_ComputerDeskHutchsquareddados.JPG.9f1e53a4bb1d4a7067881f97f93335e0.JPG

With a chisel...top was cleaned up,,,B)

1987384587_ComputerDeskHutchtopsdadocut.JPG.1e01344be81e102c7da827e43dccbf93.JPG

Plan was to do all the dados, before the matching tenons...so..:OldManSmiley:

1619055896_ComputerDeskHutchshelfdados.JPG.9b2ba7f02d3ee2e0a655aa78e777ffb0.JPG

Some, only needed one dado, but, I then had to match it's neighbor, so a shelf will set level.B)

Others need to be offset a tad, otherwise things would get too thin..

525660695_ComputerDeskHutchoffsetdados.JPG.0954184ed29df922e552ead7dc3d53c9.JPG

was going along pretty good...

442693804_ComputerDeskHutchMonitorshelfsdados.JPG.7ebbb05b3e0cacdb4e94b29f13341cbd.JPG

Until I started on the cubbyhole area...dados were fine....crowded, but fine..

1037955199_ComputerDeskHutch4cubbydados.JPG.863edfceb4a5b3096253d337f6ffc4de.JPG

Figured I could do all the tenons...Tower shelf was fitted, monitor shelf was too...however, when the shelves for the cubby holes were set in,,,:DevilLaughing:

476712661_ComputerDeskHutchshelvestooshort.JPG.6dfe3f47b36a55780acd91d915688a9f.JPG

As the Great Goblin would say.."the truth, warts and all..."   :BangingHead:somehow these came up too short...threw these away, and remade 4 more shelves...went to dry fit..1/4" too long, now:ArguingSmileys: Redid one end, tenons came up 1/16" too long...FINALLY got everything to fit..:CowboyPistol:

61495955_ComputerDeskHutchfixedshelves.JPG.605c58974f33c43a4e57f97cabcbc61c.JPG

Everything fits :TwoThumbsUp:Even did a dry fit for the entire Hutch, to see how many clamps I'll need..

1959049646_ComputerDeskHutchfirstdryfit.JPG.6b7c13968642aa271eb847719f0fd03b.JPG

:JawDrop:Hmmm, going to take a bunch....may do the glue up in sections...:ChinScratch:

Cubby hole will get a plywood back, need a rebate for that.   Thinking I may build a door for over the cubby holes...:ChinScratch:

600156116_ComputerDeskHutchendview.JPG.1e59a3537d2acbba116fca6d84b493b6.JPG

Wonder IF I need some counter-sunk Brass screws into the glue joints..:WonderScratch:

Maybe help out the end grain glue up thing.

May head back to the shop, IF the back allows....run a rebate, maybe spread some glue?

Stay tuned

Went back down to the shop for a bit....Got the Cubby Hole Assembly all glued up B)

standing as it will on the desk.   Had a plywood scrap about the right width, just a little long...:ChinScratch:

Glue and Brass nails...B) (saving the fancy plywood for something else..)

Then, since I had a few extra clamps..

1242213961_ComputerDeskHutchleftsideglueup.JPG.588978aef8f09e0922a5da4678d8eb77.JPG

Glued the shelf for the tower to the uprights....2 clamps for the glue up, the other 3 were to pull things into square with the top shelf...:ChinScratch:

Pulled inventory on long clamps...might have enough..:WonderScratch:..need to glue the Monitor shelf to these two assemblies, AND everything to the top shelf...:JawDrop:

Boss has errands in the morning, then my left knee gets PT (Therapied)  will see how I feel ( and walk) after that.  besides, it is Monday, tomorrow..:ArguingSmileys:

Stay tuned :SaluteandRun:

I am exhausted from having read the above account of todays' work.  I got maybe 1/4 of that done on myn own project and worked from 0930 till 2100.

:throbbinghead:

Wow Steven, you are certainly motoring along.  Great progress!
