July 8, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Went back to the shop...removed all the clamps from the case and the leg units...sanded everything down, leveled a few feet...set aside out of the way.. "Leg unit" sitting in front of the case unit...about the only way they will fit in there.. Assembled the upper frame....( forgot a couple nails..) and started to assemble the "Knee well unit" Lots of blue Harbor Freight clamps....details? Block is clamped up..just glued... Just glue here, as well...may be able to clean the bench off..sometime? Kind of messy, right now. Decided that, since I don't have the pine 1 x 6s to build the drawers with..I might as well glue up a top... maybe about 48" long...by 20" wide? When I added all the units up..I came up with 44-1/2" for the length...then add a few inches on each end....will have to see IF I will add a breadboard end....depends on the lumber supply. Stay tuned
July 9, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Lets see, was hopping around on a bum knee, today.. Decided to get as much done, before all them Doctors get ahold of me.. So...all clamps have been removed...was making a batch of corner blocks... These allow me to attach a top to the case...tenon goes into the stile's groove, and a screw holds the other end.. With a bead of glue. had to wait a bit to install these... As they cover the holes to attach the frames to the side of the case....I don't want to add screws to the top raised panel, either....tends to split the panel..so Mr. Stanley had a few of these. Needed to add a washer to the screws, holes were worn out a bit... About like this? There were other corner blocks getting made... These were thinned down a 1/4"...tablesaw also made the miter cut....wasn't too happy with it, so Swing this around to 45 degrees, doesn't take long for that LONG blade to make a cut.. Got to the point I could connct a few things.. But, not enough room to do much work... Imagine moving this around, by yourself.. need to get underneath this thing....so...cleared of the tablesaw...waddle the desk over to it..and flip it on to the top of the saw ( blade was lowered, of course "Stem to stern", this is 44-3/8" long...needed to finish adding brackets.. Couple needed a bit of assist from a clamp.. But, once all the brackets were done.. Seemed to pull together well enough.. Will wait and see what the knee doc says tomorrow....may be a few days before this desk is done...I went through the stack of lumber, tonight, and picked out 5 of the "best" planks....at least they are all the same thickness...may try to rough cut them for length...maybe around 48" or so? Stay tuned...
July 9, 20197 yr Author Popular Post New doctor, new appointment for the bad knee is next monday afternoon... As for today...got kicked out of my computer chair.. Sir Campy is in the house...so..added a foot rest on the new desk... It is here to brace the leg unit at the bottom....and a place for my feet. Could bepainted black, too Worked up a sewat, today..gotta stop that sort of thing....took a few trips up and down the steps, to haul 5 planks to the shop..whew.. Average width is 5-1/2", 3/4" thick....about 6' long, some at 5'. Need to cut the bad areas out, and get these down to 49" to start.... Stuff like this, and... Don't need these in a glued up desk top. This other defect? Most of the edges will need a straight line rip....some wider than others....looking for a finished width of 22" wide, by 48" long... All crosscut to 49" long...methinks this might take a while to get these all lined up... Getting the grain to line up.....stay tuned.
July 11, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Puttered around between doctor visits.... Snapped a few blue line specials....2 planks at 5" width...and this at 4"....because of a knot. . can't use the tablesaw, so 6" SKIL saw.... Trying to split the blue line...Handplane is a Stanley No.8....Jointer... ran both the sawn edges and the non-sawed edges....after 3 boards and a lot of shavings.. Dry fit to see how bad the edges line up.. Methinks Board #2 needs a tad more work....still have 2 more planks to edge..These 3 are just sitting here, no glue or clamps needed.. Maybe later today, I can work on this desk's top? We'll see.. Stay tuned

July 12, 20197 yr Author Hook came off... Too dang early in the morning....rearranged the shop a bit....Cleared out a space to stash the desk, until needed.. Even swept the floor back there Moved the saw a bit, set up the rip fence...and did a wee bit of straight-line rips.. Ripped until both edges were straight on all 5 boards...saved a few pieces, to use as clamping cawls.. Can never have enough...Dry fit? One clamp across the middle, to see how the gaps closed up...had one or two needed trimmed again...then drew a couple lines across, to aid in the glue up Because there is always one board that wants to be "difficult" ..cleaned the bench off, too. Won't stay this way for long... as.. Always something blocking the view...Will clean the glue off later, while I flatten the top... A simple whack with a hammer, to remove the cawls when I take the clamps off..will work on both faces,,,best looking one will be the "show" surface. Just letting this sit a day....knee is sore, anyway. Stay tuned
July 14, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Guess i had better update this post...Top is out of the clamps.... Glue lines cleaned up..Stanley No. 70 high spots lowered to match the low spots...Stanley #5-1/2 jumbo jack. Ends were trimmed square.... Circular saw guide fence. Both ends. beltsander ( 80 grit) ROS ( 60 grit) Palm sander( 180 grit)...plus the jack plane...even the #3c got used,,,couple of small spots the big jack missed...Chose the better looking of the two faces...as the Top...cleaned off the tablesaw, lowered the blade...plopped the top onto the saw....good side down. Hoist the base onto the top, and get it centered....no overhang in the back, rest has 1-1/2"....then added washers and screws Using these slotted holes... washers let things slide better, otherwise, the head of the screw just gets stuck...the 4 in the knee well area were easy to reach..the 3 in the drawer unit... Not much room? Ya think? let this mess sit a day... this morning, I had help getting this down off the saw...needed the saw for other chores...then hauled a few planks to the shop.. Took a while..but i ripped and crosscut until there were enough blanks for 4 drawers...Picked out the 4 best looking of the drawer front blanks.. The other 2 may get used in the skinny drawers...there was an issue about knots.. Right where either dovetails or a dado would go.. Made enough pine blanks for the 4 backs.. and the 4 pairs of sides... Stack in the background is Ash leftovers...Set up the Stanley 45.. And a jig... Got the 4 fronts grooved for a plywood bottom...reset the jig..(and the 45's fence, was too low..) 4 pairs of sides now have their groove thing going...made a lot of "noodles"... Set out the next cutter for the 45....was using a #12 cutter...going with an #18-1/2 cutter.. To make the dados to house the drawer backs....decided to do a test run of dovetails...to see if things will work.. Been a while out of practice? About then...the knee said "TIME OUT!" so, will have to try again tomorrow? Or wait until Tuesday? Stay tuned

July 16, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Ok, Honey-do project to start the day....and get me in a bad mood.. Grandson had already painted the cabinets....I get to re-handle all of the Then Lunch...then go hide in the shop for about 4 hours...Dovetail work needed done... Layout work. had an issue with a combo square not holding settings...got out one that will...set to limit how far the router goes into the wood.. About that far..and remember...safety first.. Results were a bit rough.. We have ways And a few chisels...got one drawer's dovetails done, stashed it out of the way.. Sides were cut on the bandsaw,, Then the waste was pared away with a chisel...The more I worked, the better these looked...until... The next to last set.. Stashed them away, for now...while I set up the next job... had the backs already cut to size....needed dados for them to sit in.....Took awhile, used the tablesaw, this time around Not too bad, for 4 hours of work? Thinking of using that handle.... I don't know..too big? I WAS going to use this contraption, for the dados....decided the tablesaw might be quicker....Considering, I don't HAVE a dado set up for the tablesaw Need to go and buy a bit of plywood for the drawer bottoms, then I can do a bit of assembly... Stay tuned...( bad storm rolling through here, right now..)

July 18, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Ok....Last night, found enough plywood for 2 drawers...got one glued up.....This morning...got that drawer out of the clamps.. Needing a bunch of clean up...Drawer front was sanded, then planed... The WR #62 ? All it wanted to do was tear chunks out...so..old school plane.. Sargent #408 ( #3 size) was busy cleaning things up. New handles use a single bolt, so I need to find the center point of each drawer.. Do a diagonal from the corners, make 2 marks, where they cross is the center point. (Wonder what that grain will pop out like.) Used a square while gluing the drawer up....first assemble all the parts, then add screws through the sides, into the drawer's back.... Clamps across the front, check for square, adjust for square, then 3 screws through the bottom panel into the back bevels are for starting a drawer into it's opening in the case. Drawer front #2 had issues....was cupped..we have ways. Millers Falls #14, slight camber iron, going across the grain..Both the inside and.. The outside...then the #408 to smooth things out...Sides needed pilot holes drilled, with a vintage drill. Dados needed smoothed.. Holes needed a countersink.. bevel at the back corner, easy to cut, now.. Then spread a bunch of glue around, add some screws and clamps... Check for square, add the screws at the back...let this sit a while... Handles? Found some vintage ones...needed a little clean up.. Steel, with a center boss of Brass...cleaned these up, and gave the steel a coat of paint Rustoleum Metallic Silver....will come back later, and uncover the Brass...details? 2 rounds for the skinny drawers, 4 ovals for the main drawers. Road trip...plywood for the rest of the drawers has been bought....along with a 1 x 4 x 4' for skinny drawer parts.. Stay tuned
July 18, 20196 yr Steven I wish I could give you two hearts for that post. Great job on the brasses. I like the three screws on the bottom of the drawer.
