July 30, 20196 yr Author Popular Post And, we have a glue up... 4 clamps to hold the cubby assembly, clamped the top of the Hutch to the top of the tablesaw, was a bit tippy, otherwise Toys were needed.. Added a few screws to each glue joint ( only snapped one screw ) drill for the pilot holes, another to drive the screws home after the countersink drill.. And sanded things smooth( and remove any markings ) Fun part was to rotate this mess around, and glue the rest of the parts in place. i didn't like the "show edge" of the Monitor shelf, flipped that over...spread some glue, and add a forest of clamps... Will let this sit a day ( and me too..), and then sand and stain? Now, gene has been hollering about the brackets I will be using to attach this hutch to the desk...bought them this morning, along with those brass screws.. Soooo.... The Brass "L" shaped ones go around back, one per upright...IF the other brackets look familiar? I used another set to connect the desk parts together....new ones come with their own screws.. Them black, round tops.....or, I could just use brass screws.... have "homework" to do on the knee....letting the glue dry awhile.....once all them clamps are gone, I can add screws to the top's glue joints... Stay tuned....
July 30, 20196 yr Ahh, the brackets!!! Now we wait for the install. But, take care of that knee!! You don't need to be carrying all that stuff up the stairs. Edited July 30, 20196 yr by Gene Howe

July 30, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Ok...homework for the knee, this morning, was "rewarded" with a charlie horse... Forest of clamps were removed, hutch was sanded, screws were installed in the top shelf... Placed back onto the tablesaw, router did a few stretches of round-overs...front of the shelves got sanded..and set this aside for a bit.. While I figured out how to stain everything that showed...finally... Letting the stain dry, right now....no shellac, yet. besides, I needed to resaw a few parts for a door frame. Ran enough for a pair of stiles and a pair of rails. Then ran a groove in all four parts, and tenons on the rails.. Used these to mark out what size plywood to cut....out of that fancy grained plywood....then a dry fit.. Parts need cleaned up, glued up, sanded and stained...then some hardware. Will use a paper shim under the door, when installing the brass hinges.. So, letting the knee rest a while, today....I also did ONE lap walking around in Wall E World ( needed a new brush for the shellac) so kind of tired...may work on that door later this evening, maybe. stay tuned..
July 31, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Door is now sitting in the clamps. Cleaned the show side of the frame with the #11 Junior jack plane..spread some glue, added some cauls.. View of the inside of the door, I used pairs of cauls, to clamp the ends flat. Vise is holding a second HF clamp, as a third hand...the outside? Trying to decide which way is "up"...according to the grain in the panel. Will let this sit overnight...then clean it up, test fit the results and maybe a coat of stain? Dug up some hardware, too. Will surface mount the hinges...latch is to keep the door shut...never know WHAT you might find behind that door... there is and issue...about one of the brackets for the front of the hutch... That one on the right...won't allow the door to open all the way, will move it to just around the corner....like the pilot hole drill? Once the stain on the door is dry, and the door installed....then I'll shellac the entire Hutch a few times... Looking like "Moving Day" may be this coming weekend? been a LONG month of work... stay tuned..

July 31, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Door has been cleaned up, and stained...before I had the knee rehab, today.. Rested up a while after rehab...then... Shellac, varnish...hinges, and latch...all the brackets are installed, once the shellac dried.. Other 2 screws go into the back of the desk's top... Front brackets are in place...#4 is around the corner from the door. PIP? Top of the Hutch needs one more coat of shellac... After that, and a rub down with 0000 steel wool...might be Moving Day? Stay tuned, almost done...
July 31, 20196 yr Looks "GREAT" Steve! Now you get to take it apart so's you can move it, then put it back together.

August 1, 20196 yr Popular Post Way to go Steve. Now to get some strong backs to haul it up those stairs.
August 1, 20196 yr As Larry said, take it apart to move it up the stairs. If it were me, I would use a Harbor Freight moving blanket or an old quilt to move it upstairs. Put the blanket or quilt on the steps, flip it end over end to get the top down on the quilt. Make sure the quilt stays with the desk and then it is a pretty easy push up the stairs without more damage to the knee. I am so sorry for the knee pain. I've heard from others how painful that is. Steven, thank you for the journey and a beautiful work station. It looks great.
August 1, 20196 yr Popular Post Another Masterpiece!!!! I am exhausted from it all, going to take a day off and recuperate.
August 2, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Desk is ready to move upstairs. had to shim under the door, was dragging halfway to fully opened. Need to schedule a time when enough young bodies are around to move things around....I can move the drawers and the hutch...desk will take two people..and I am not one of them. Biggest thing will be moving the computer out of it's old home, and into the new one.... Now have a new LED desk light...old one died. And, it is very BRIGHT...need sunglasses to sit at the computer thanks for following along

August 2, 20196 yr Author Popular Post Disn't buy any "shades" was too busy running errands....cleaned out the old desk.. Pulled the 4 skinny drawers out, let the Boss sift through them...as I brought up the new drawers, and the Hutch....Grandson #3 helped me move the desk up the stairs, and close to it's new home....assembled the pieces, had fun trying to place the computer where it needed to go....was unable to sit the monitor on it's shelf..by 3/4" ... sat in the computer chair to give things a "test drive" Might just work.. new hat, too Thanks for following along... That table top back in the corner is where I stash most of my books.
