I think you'll like the last photo in todays post. Todays progress report. Today I made up the plunger for the power switch, which is now located under the old radio dial. I tried a few different approaches at accomplishing this. From trying to use lamp parts, to settling on a combination of lamp parts, and wood. This photo shows the parts I decided to go with. Rear view. This is how I made the plunger. The stop rods are toothpicks. Toothpicks trimmed to fit radio dial. They act as stops to keep the plunger from coming out of the front of the radio dial. I then trimmed the shaft to length for activating the switch. This is the assembled unit. It will be activating the power switch which is now located here in this photo. You can also see the hard drive LED crystal bezel, and the red button for the reset switch. The hole above the switch is for the power LED. Since I'm now using the power LED to light the radio dial I removed the separate light wire that I ran in the control harness. I'll be routing that wire elsewhere for another purpose. The reset switch, and hard drive LED are mounted in the cut off Compaq switch housing. This photo shows the harness installed into the upper case section. I still have to make a mount for the PC speaker. Here's a look at the dial assembly mounted. @Grandpadave52 Tuned for listening to "Animal Stories" on 89 WLS Chicago. My early beginnings into electronics- The tuner had continuous tuning from channel 2, thru the FM range and then on thru channel 13 along with the "electric eye" to indicate the strongest signal.. IDK Dumont made their own TV to go along with their TV network. They were so far ahead of the game in the late 40's & early 50's. I've never seen one like that. Now I want one too.

I have worked on tube sets though, by the time I took any electronics courses everything was pretty much transistors, and IC's. My folks had one of the all in one sets with AM/FM, Phono, and television in one cabinet. Thanks Dave, Boy did that bring back some memories, I loved "Animal Stories" when I was in my early teens. I'm going for the 1920's-30's style of radio look. I keep finding bits and pieces of stuff that was salvaged and stashed from junk picking, pile diving, etc. The trim pieces I'm using came from salvage furniture that my neighbor throws out from time to time. The object I'll be introducing today came from my neighbors stash of lamp parts. I had a hard time talking him out of it, but when he asked me what I was going to do with it he tossed it to me. So follow along, and you'll see what I answered him. Start with one 1920's-30's style of lamp finial. Step ONE: Add a few parts by threading the 1/8" IPS to 1/4" 28? Threads per inch adaptor, and the finial together (flange of adaptor to base of finial) using the stud. The adapter will go through the original top of Silver Box brass tag which will be going back on the box top, but in a slightly different location from original. Well you're at it throw in one, maybe two? Blue LED's Which leaves you with something like this. Now wait a minute...We just saw you put the adaptor, and the finial together with a steel stud!! ….You Did!!!.... As to the new location... Getting the power cable from the computer motherboard required making another harness that would get there. Which required drilling a couple of holes. One in the box lid. You can still see the original brass tag holes and the hole at the back edge of the lid. And the other in the back edge of the upper case. The harness the gets passed through the above hole. The plug end stays inside the case. I'll be making an Oak chase for running the wires through, and the finished finial assembly will get mounted to it. The two original brass tag holes will get covered by the wire chase. At that point the lighted knob for the computer case lid will be ready to lift the lid. December 30, 20187 yr Author Yesterdays, and todays updates. Yesterday was more materials run than work getting accomplished. First off was a run to the local recycle yard for some PC parts. I thought I did pretty good for $3.00. That was until I found out today I lost the Red LED that I had scrounged. I set about building the wiring chase for the lamp finial knob. I also added a backsplash to the lid. Here's a view of a trial fit of the chase. The piece at the top is a brass plate from a trophy shop. I'll be putting the two large crystal bezels in it. This is how the front of the chase mounts to the lid. The screw gets covered with the lamp finials brass base. This is how I mounted the rear of the chase. I also installed the chassis backplate stops into the top case section. I had to add a layer of veneer to the rear edge so the two case sections line up for securing the two case sections together. The center section is also veneered so everything lines up. Then I attached the lid hinge. Here's a top view of the chase installed for fitting purposes. I'll be using a red LED in the top crystal bezel, a white LED in the lower crystal bezel, and a blue led in the lamp finial knob. And a frontal view. I also made up the resistor network for the LED's. I'm running the LED's in a parallel circuit so if one burns out I can tell which one went bad. I also started working on the worst of the doors for what will be the cabinet the computer will be going into. It's pretty rough, but I'm going to use it because it matches the other door. This door is from another "White Clad" cabinet that I salvaged the door, and drawer front from. The rest was junk. I've removed most of the hardware with the exception of one screw which is being real stubborn. I'll be reusing the hinges, and the pull from the drawer front. All of the current screw holes will be filled, as I'll be relocating the hinges, etc.. I hope I have enough Oak veneer left to repair the panels. These are some really cheaply built doors in that the back is just 1/8" plywood. Here I've got the door glued up and clamped. With going with the red, white, and blue, LEDs I may have a custom plaque "The Patriot" made up by my buddy that works at the trophy shop. I'm also going to replace the rear case fan with a blue lighted PWM fan. It's already got a red lighted power supply fan, a white lighted CPU cooler fan, so I may just as well add the blue to keep the theme going. The motherboard supports single color LED's and allows me to set different lighting effects. Well that's it for today. Until next time. Edited December 30, 20187 yr by Larry Buskirk
