Shaker Transitional Rocker Part 3 (Curly Maple)

Well here we are. Getting ready to cut into a nice 8/4 board of heavy Curly Maple to begin another rocker journey. Tonight I'm laying out parts and cutting. With any luck I'll have some slats in the steamer tonight.

This photo does no justice to the figure in this board. I'll keep this topic going with this chair build. Thanks for following along!

Legs are cut and squared.

Just got the back slats out of the steam box and into their forms. Here they'll set for a week or more.

Today I have two back legs heading to the steamer. In just a few minutes they'll be ready to set inside. Dry fit the legs into the forms, just for a good visual before it's committed.

The chair rungs are in the middle below the back slats, the legs are laying on the sides.

Wow John, you "got up and started before breakfast this morning"  Looking good so far.

With all the book matching, this one is going to be a beaut!

How many boards did it take? Do you have enough of the curly material for the seat?

Herb, I started with a 8/4 x 96" by 9.5" board, and I cut all the parts from it. I have a length about 2 feet left. I am going to try to get a matching foot stool from that section.

The seat is weaved fabric tape, no wood is used in the seat.

I'll send my height, width and most important the weight limit and my address as to where to send this future masterpiece when you are finished.

Oh don't forget the coffee holder and the built in the 1 dozen donut holder. Let me know when you ship so I can be home.

One rear leg has been turned. A slight taper overall with a 3/8" tenon for the cushion rail at the top. I sanded to 320 and a shaving burnish.

Thanks for following!

I love sharing Gramps. I get an ego boost from you guys when I do.:D

You know, they did have access to some beautiful figured maple Dave, actually more so than we do today, I have seen original chairs with gorgeous figure, here is a chair at the New Lebanon Museum in New York. This chair was built in the 1850's.
