Hand Tools

Lets hear about your favorite hand tools, got a No.608C Bedrock you'd like to brag about? Would you like to know how to tune up those old hand planes? Well you've come to the right place!

Hand Tools.jpg

Hand tools are often neglected in the search for the pleasing objects of the past. Considered too utilitarian, their decorative appeal—the mellow patina of the wood plane or the delicately tapered legs of a pair of dividers—often goes unnoticed. Surprisingly modern in design, the ancient carpenter's or cabinetmaker's tool has a vitality of line that can, without reference to technical significance, make it an object of considerable grace and beauty. The hand tool is frequently a lively and decorative symbol of a society at a given time—a symbol, which, according to the judges at London's Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851, gives "indications of the peculiar condition and habits of the people whence they come, of their social and industrial wants and aims, as well as their natural or acquired advantages." The hand tool, therefore, should be considered both as an object of appealing shape and a document illustrative of society and its progress. ~ (Woodworking Tools 1600-1900 Author: Peter C. Welsh)

I don't know if they ship from UK, but it looks like a deal. You only really need one as you can easily move from say, your jack plane to your jointer plane.

I had an entry not long ago about my Porter Cable 20 volt drill chuck was slipping and one of my two batteries would not hold a charge very long. I ordered a new Ryobi 18 volt drill with a half inch chuck. After I ordered the new drill, I found the video of how to lock your chuck. I didn't know that!! I got out my new Ryobi and started using it. Right away I didn't like how it fit my hand, the pistol grip was too large in dia. Next was the speeds. The lower one is fine, but the high speed is to slow at its highest rpm, compared to my Porter Cable. These drills are used for many other beside drilling holes. (Polishing, buffing, sanding, etc) When I applied the lock trick t…

Rust Hunt on a Saturday....rain threatening ....Antique Mall 3 blocks from the house, and the Boss has sent me out to run a few errands...including buying a new roll of Blue "City" trash bags.....and..of course I hit that Mall...first. Backyard is shaping up... Metal framework is gone, most of the trash and old tarps or bagged up. That be the Neighborhood Yard Nazi's Garage, back there....her attempt to mow the yard got..rained out....too bad. I have to learn to NOT go up to the second floor of the Mall....but...I did spend about...$19 and change...on just 4 items....from a stall that has planes for OVER $65.. 3 out of 4...Squ…

In the process of building that box....had a bunch of resets on the Stanley #45 to do....mainly changing where the fence will be, and whether short or long rods were to be used....decided to make some things a bit..easier to do To change those rods...there are 4 thumbscrews to loosen, and tighten back up, with one too close the the handle area. They all needed a pair of needle nosed pliers to get them to ...move...look right under the wheel to adjust the depth of cut....so... I retired these two (FIRED!) and stashed them away...had a pair of slotted bolts to replace them....instead of pliers, I can just... Use something like this....like on …

Anyone used any of the tool line from Wal*mart's new house brand, Hart? I have a couple Hart 24 oz. framing hammers that I've had for years and are very nice. They were prior to the brand name being sold. The literature says, "Designed in US and manufactured overseas." It falls under the TTI umbrella, who also make Milwaukee, Ryobi, and Ridgid power tools. Just don't know if it's at the bottom tier or better quality. https://www.toolboxbuzz.com/cordless-tools/hart-tools-launches-new-line-of-tools-at-walmart/ https://www.popularmechanics.com/home/a29856890/walmart-hart-tools/

Wife has a couple of sizes but she had a request for some 1 3/4" holes in the center of some glass circles so I ordered this set. The set was less than 19 with free freight from Amazon...If kept wet while cutting they will last a long time.. Its not mentioned here with all the macho wood workers but there are times I needed a hole or two in some glass or ceramic or this type on material..

So, finally got back home today. New meds, got rid of some others.....smallish Stroke. Still worn out and sore....may take a few days to get back to "normal".... Any...seems this plane will need a lot of cleaning up.. 99% of the black Japanning is ...gone. Wood is in great shape. I just ordered this set of screw drivers and picks, I have a couple black powder revolvers and I really need to get into the guts and clean em up really good. Regular screw drivers will mess up the screws and finish, these Grace Drivers are hollow ground, made for guns, once I get em in my hands, and use them I'll follow this up with a review. These picks will come in handy too.

Looking through the Lee Valley web site, I came across this. Seems to be a new magazine specializing in hand tools and their use. They have issues 1 and 2 on the web site, but I don't know if a subscription is available. If a subscription is wanted, you might have to buy the first issue from LV and then contact the publisher. I just did a screenshot, so there is some extra garbage in the picture from my desk top.

I had bought this plane last year because I'm a shooter and the name "Winchester" on a hand plane was interesting to me. So the intended use was to sit on a shelf in my "man cave", but I though this might be worth taking for a spin. To be honest, I've found it is such a good plane I may keep in the shop as a user. Anyway, I have no idea who made this plane for Winchester, but it sure looks like a Stanley. It my understanding that both Stanley and Sargent made them at one time or another. That matters not to me, I was OK with either. What did attract me to this was it's rather complete. A lot of the Winchester planes I've seen had some parts swapped, this one appears origi…

In my shop, there are just 2 spokeshaves. The one in front is by Seymour Smith & Sons....the other...haven't a clue ( hanger hole was done by me) No-Name was having issues, was chattering more than it was cutting....took it apart.. The cutter needed it's back flattened, and the bevel honed. The cap was ROUGH...needed the bevel polished up, the underside flattened to match the iron/cutter....but....the "bed" for the iron to sit on....60 grit sandpaper would be almost smooth....we have ways .. Still a bit more to smooth out. Needle file, run all the way to the back, as the iron sit back there, too iron and cap done, bed cleaned and …

Here's an auction with some drafting tools and slide rulers. How many of you remember these? When I was a senior in high school, my physics teacher would not let me use one because "not everyone in class knows how." This was despite the fact there was a 6' long slide rule above the blackboard in the classroom. To make matters even more puzzling the same teacher was teaching us logarithms (the concept behind slide rules) and some trig in math class. (This just goes to show how bad my secondary school education was. The next year he was working in a lumber yard and eventually we became friends outside school). Well, anyway, my buddy and I volunteered t…

Just recently a friend brought me this screwdriver and ask if I had one to which I replied no, haven't even seen one. He said he ran across it while out one day and thought of me and purchased it and brought it to me. How awesome is that. Anyway it's an HD Smith #8 Winged screwdriver. They made this starting in the early 1900's and other tools in a line called "Perfect Handle". Here is a link to a site with some information f you would like to see more. Excited to add this to my old tool collection.

@derekcohen mentioned in the General Woodworking forum about a dresser he had built that was featured in the current issue of Fine Woodworking magazine. I didn't want to detract from his topic my post, since his work was so beautiful, so I am posting here. In that same issue is an article about spokeshaves, written by Peter Galbert. Since I know nothing about spokeshaves, I thought his article was quite informative. I have been interested for some time in purchasing a spokeshave, (no I am not going to build a wagon wheel), so I looked to see what he recommended as a first purchase. He recommended a Stanley 151, which he said could be had from the used tool market. I…

On second thought, I'm not doing outside jobs every day any more. Maybe I'll just wait for my existing set to wear out.
