April 11, 20215 yr Popular Post Rust Hunt on a Saturday....rain threatening ....Antique Mall 3 blocks from the house, and the Boss has sent me out to run a few errands...including buying a new roll of Blue "City" trash bags.....and..of course I hit that Mall...first. Backyard is shaping up... Metal framework is gone, most of the trash and old tarps or bagged up. That be the Neighborhood Yard Nazi's Garage, back there....her attempt to mow the yard got..rained out....too bad. I have to learn to NOT go up to the second floor of the Mall....but...I did spend about...$19 and change...on just 4 items....from a stall that has planes for OVER $65.. 3 out of 4...Square seems to be a Stanley? Compass turned out to be a Sept 24, 1889 Patent, from Starrett...Not sure about the calipers, yet.. As for the 4th? Rusty & Krusty, Stanley No. 116 Mitre Box.. THIS just MIGHT take a while There is supposed to be a scale on top, showing the degrees the box is set to... And a notched "pointer" in the inner ring...right.. Square did not require any work. Calipers are soaking in 3in1 oil...2 hands to make the arms even budge...no way to loosen nor lock it in place..The compass? and.. New Pencil. May see about a new pointer....funny looking bolt is not OEM...May try to make a new one? I did take the Mitre Box apart, last night....work in progress....all bolts and screws have been removed, and cleaned up. Just happen to have a backsaw to use with this Mitre Box.. As for those rusty things? Parts is parts...I did find a logo, though.. And, as for the bolts... A work in progress.... May start in again, this afternoon?
April 13, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Update....Those bolts and screws are now rust free and shiny. The 4 parts... Are now rust-free...had to install a new wire wheel in the 6" Bench grinder. Then lay out a "protector" on the top of the bench.. Single coat of gray primer... Let this dry a day or 2...sand things smooth, then coat with some Semi-gloss black paint...and see about a brand new deck... Hmmm...too fancy for a Miter Box Deck? Still need to fabricate two clips for the front edge....used to attach the box to a bench or sawhorse...have the metal on hand....needs cut to size, drill two countersunk holes in each one....Maybe use a Gun Blue Paste on them? Scratch Awl to bring out the scale markings, and that logo.... Stay tuned...
April 14, 20215 yr Popular Post I love the items you find shopping. Wow, I need to come and go shopping with you. LOL Have you ever used a baking soda gun to remove rust?
April 14, 20215 yr Author Popular Post Nope, just wire wheels. Black paint .. Supposed to be Semi-gloss? Cardio for today.. Cut a good section out of a 4' long plank...Mitre saw to rehab a mitrebox.. Tablesaw to rip for width.. . So the best part of the board matches the old deck board....then smooth things a bit.. Lay out and drill some BIG pilot holes, and run a groove.. Still, I needed a LOT of wax on these threads.. Test drive? Backsaw wasn't sharp enough, so.. A 20" long 10ppi Disston D-8 Panel saw seems to work quite well...and fast Coat of stain...may be a working in progress.. Set the scales to 90 degrees, and checked with a square... I left the paint off the scales, wanted to be able to READ them. Not a bad little miter box.
