January 16, 20215 yr Popular Post I had bought this plane last year because I'm a shooter and the name "Winchester" on a hand plane was interesting to me. So the intended use was to sit on a shelf in my "man cave", but I though this might be worth taking for a spin. To be honest, I've found it is such a good plane I may keep in the shop as a user. Anyway, I have no idea who made this plane for Winchester, but it sure looks like a Stanley. It my understanding that both Stanley and Sargent made them at one time or another. That matters not to me, I was OK with either. What did attract me to this was it's rather complete. A lot of the Winchester planes I've seen had some parts swapped, this one appears original to my untrained eye. The casting is marked W4, the cap iron is Winchester, and the iron is marked Winchester. As I recall I paid $40 for it, the prices on these are artificially high since gun collectors buy them as well. Anyway, some pics....I didn't sharpen it to make those curls, used it just as I received it. I did (after the test drive) flatten the sole, but it didn't take much. January 16, 20215 yr Popular Post ..With the Winchester name, would that be considered a shooting plane?

January 17, 20215 yr Popular Post Not a knowledgeable plane man, but this is interesting. Never heard of a Winchester. That name is only used for guns in my database. LOL And, I can't get a plane to work. I have tried to use on one some scrap pine so I could get some sense how to work it. I may give it another try tomorrow in between jobs. I need to play around to get the feel and learn how it works.
January 17, 20215 yr Popular Post Winchester needed a way to keep its workers employed after WW1....as sales for weapons went downhill......so, they started to sell a full "kit" of handtools...I also have a square with the Winchester logo on the blade.... That's pretty cool....I was looking for a set of Winchester augers, then saw they are nothing more than the Irwin bits restamped with the Winchester name. That plus they are more expensive than the hand planes.
January 17, 20215 yr Popular Post Like Steve, I was unaware of Winchester being anything other than firearms. 5 hours ago, steven newman said: I also have a square with the Winchester logo on the blade.... Steven, please post up a pic of this!

January 21, 20215 yr Popular Post If I lived closer, I'd get that one for the LOML! She comes from a long line of coopers (and Coopers, come to think of it!), and would give it a place of honour on a mantel, or somewhere.
