Please bear with me. The following has many assumptions & when i'm wrong please enlighten me. Currently I'm in the process of making pens---by orders of SWMBO. Pen turning is not my most thrilling task. I am using CA (thin) & CA polish to finish the pens. Multiple coats (minimum of 3 each). This leaves a glossy/glassy finish---which seems to be the intent of using CA (assumption #1)---CA is expensive (fact #1). Previously, when using & reviewing the use of polyurethane, it also leaves a glossy/glassy (some say plastic looking) finish. (Assumption & fact #2). You can see where this is going--right? If the intent is to leave a glossy finish--why not just use poly (the cheap way out)? I have NOT compared the perceived depth of finish between the two (CA & poly) but would assume (#3) that multiple coats of poly can be built on each other to obtain the desired depth of finish. After building the finish, either with CA or poly, is it recommended to apply a finishing wax to the pen? I'm assuming (#4) that the wax would dull the sheen somewhat and possibly wear off with use. All comments, bombs, daggers, etc. welcome. Thks smitty

There are some programs out there that get turned pens out to the people currently serving in the our military. It was always on my bucket list to participate. I think some of the programs actually send the kits out no charge to be turned and returned for distribution. I happened to have a few kits on hand so I decided to just turn them and get them sent out to someone who could get them to the right people. They are on now in transit. These are mostly Cherry with a few Purple Heart and some Brazilian Cherry. The dark brown are from a dowel rod I purchased at a hobby store. I have noticed that the dowels hobby stored have are usually different species of wood but they are not defined as to what they are. Doesn't hurt to take a look when you are there if you turn pens. Anyway, here they are.

HMMM welp here we go head first into Acrylic pen blanks. I've got 3 more blanks. I ordered 2 of each of the blue and black pattern and a purplish pattern. I'm hoping these are easy as pie to turn and finish as the wood barrels are. But I dunno if I'm sure of what I'm getting myself into yet or not. How ever I noticed a nasty nasty stench when cutting the acrylic blanks and drilling them out. One thing I'm sure of is I was happy with how straight the drill bit went into the blanks nice and even. So that will make for a nice barrel shape I think at least. Yes this one will Definitely be recorded. Now the main question I had was should I sand these with water on hand or would just regular dry sanding work? Thanks.

Not sure if this was a wise move to sacrafice a center band for size adjusting?
AndrewB posted a topic in Wood Turners
So I turned a zircote blank today that wood is beyond brittle I had quite a few knicks and chunks fly off but it wound up going okay. But I'm not sure if it was a wise move on sacraficing one of my center bands that I don't have many of to use as a size gap comparrison so I could better turn down the body of the pen barrels to a better diameter. It seemed to work out for the most part but I'm wondering if I didn't realize this was not a new thing and I'm just making newbie mistakes anyways here is the video for it.- 5 replies

With the frustrations of bowls which can be a challenge, I've been turning pens. Quite frankly I'm enjoying it 20 times more. I can turn them out faster and put them together faster. I just finished this one up tonight. The barrels are made out of purple heart. I've got about 18 more blanks coming in tomorrow ordered some components. I still have to pick up some gold plated spacers to match. (Gift pens). But I think the pen turning has come with its own challenges of knowing when to stop cutting into the wood if it is too thin and brittle go down too far and it just breaks and snaps off the piece and then the time is wasted. I've been getting the time down to carving sanding and staining in less than an hour. But here is the first SEMI decent pen made. I ran out of blanks, what I basically used was handle scales for knives that I had laying around not being used. So I thought why not turn them into pens. Worked out pretty good.

First off I did order myself a pen making kit from rockler.com website. I also had placed an order for a set of cole jaws from Amazon website. and I ordered a bit of wood from Cook Woods out of Kalamath Oregon. Going to give them a try for bowl blanks their pricing is reasonable and ships rather fast if you're on the west coast. The coal jaws I havent quite got figured out as of yet, but once I get them set up I'm sure I'll be good to go. As for cook wooks I'm not sure of them as of yet but they may be receiving more orders. Not sure what the heck is up with UPS lately but I had a tool stolen out of a package I had ordered for a sander and yea wasn't thrilled with that but I got a refund for the trouble. The pen kit should be fun to try out I did order that off the rockler page. decent price as well get quite a few things with it including an MT2 turning jig for your lathe. So not too bad plus all the right drill bits youll need. So that should be fun and interesting to get into. Not to sure what everybody else's thoughts are on pen turning but I would like to give it a go. Also I'm not quite sure what to make of the odd angled cut maple blanks. Either way shouldn't be too much of an issue. If you guys have any suggestions for pen turning I'm all ears. (it wasn't a cheap kit)

I am going to brag again, but first, John, if this is in the wrong section, please move it to the appropriate section. Thank you. It's been awhile, but finally he got excited to make his own pen. I purchased 25 kits to make some for Ed (MountainGuardian). When my grandson asked about them, I asked if he would like to make his own. Oh, it was like Christmas. I didn't get any pictures of him band sawing the mahogany pen blanks. And, I didn't get any pictures of him boring the holes or inserting the tubes or cleaning up the ends to get them into final size and shape. But, I have pictures of him starting his roughing, trying to decide his design, making his final design and ready for finish. So, here goes. Here he is roughing the blanks. Cal, do you recognize the mandrel? I like that it fits perfectly in the Nova chuck. I had just shown him how to taper toward the end. He is trying to get his head around the concept, but he got it in a few seconds. He is doing the final shape. I showed him here how to turn the parting tool on its side, use the heel of the point to make lines. He tried it. Here comes the shot where he is so proud. I advised that he not take it to school for risk of theft or loss. He is not going to take it home as his sister and parents will all want to use it. He's a smart young man. Age 13. I hope this gives hope in your abilities and that some of you can trick your youngsters to do something not electronic. Here's hoping for you.
