  1. Walnut bowl finished with Walnut Oil. Pau Rosa square bowl finished with Tung Oil. Purpleheart bowl finished with Shellac.
  2. From the album: The Hulsey Family 2021

Mr. Hulsey, and Purple Heart, freedom is most certainly not free!
  3. I wanted to make some different ornaments and my wife wanted me to use Purple Hart. 1.The one on the left is Purple Hart and Yellow Hart with some embellishment. 2.The one in the Center is all Purple Hart, however I used friction burning to get different shades. you have to look closely, the picture doesn't show it very well 3. This was an experiment with coarse grained White Oak. I used Red latex paint, wipe off after a few minutes and sand. Repeat............I like it. The picture as shown here is an extreme close up and you see many things that no one normally sees. Until I saw it, couldn't believe how close it came out.
  4. So I received an order of blanks today from Cook Woods. I'm being a bit crazy with this one here I've started on a purple heart blank. How ever I AM NOT using the face place to start it off. I off set the blank a bit and went with the live center option. I wanted to try for a bit of a different pattern with the way the grain looks in a finished product. I'm not sure if this was just down right risky or plain stupid of me to do. How ever the main issue I've been having is the fact that the live center wants to slip on occasion when I'm cutting into the wood so its been a slow going process. Yes I've made sure the tail stock was tight into the blank giving it support. It would still slip. I'm just hoping I can get a good cut on the tenon. Any suggestions on making this work?
  5. With the frustrations of bowls which can be a challenge, I've been turning pens. Quite frankly I'm enjoying it 20 times more. I can turn them out faster and put them together faster. I just finished this one up tonight. The barrels are made out of purple heart. I've got about 18 more blanks coming in tomorrow ordered some components. I still have to pick up some gold plated spacers to match. (Gift pens). But I think the pen turning has come with its own challenges of knowing when to stop cutting into the wood if it is too thin and brittle go down too far and it just breaks and snaps off the piece and then the time is wasted. I've been getting the time down to carving sanding and staining in less than an hour. But here is the first SEMI decent pen made. I ran out of blanks, what I basically used was handle scales for knives that I had laying around not being used. So I thought why not turn them into pens. Worked out pretty good.
  6. Follow this link and click on the blue button about the free tool box. https://www.blogs.va.gov/VAntage/65480/wwii-veteran-creates-program-post-911-purple-heart-recipients/#comment-152685 This program is primarily for those who served and were injured in combat post 9/11. Other veterans may apply, but don't hold your breath. One thing you will need is the capability to scan your DD Form 214 to your computer and then attach it to the application for the toolbox. Just remember, vet, those of you who served in Korea and Vietnam don't get many benefits. You are welcome to try and I wish you success.
  7. I got another idea for an ornament using offset angles and Purple Heart burn. You can see the angled body with purple heart cross going thru it. After seeing the video of a guy heating purple heart to make it turn dark purple, I thought I'd try heat friction color. It worked ok, but was kind of streaked. However the streaks produced their own beauty. I used some gold colored jewelry to embellish it a bit. One thing I did not count on.........the heat made a separation crack open on both sides. Never had that happen before. . l'm still going to try the torch heat........someday.
  8. From the album: Genn Spain

Made of purple heart and hard maple. Purple heart is a little tough to work with but beautiful wood.
  9. My wife asked for me to make a cross for our grandson as a conformation gift from us. She wanted Yellow Hart and something red. I changed her mind. Purple has a special Easter significance and we decide on purple hart as the other wood
  10. I just finished this small table for my wife. She chose the woods and dimentions. It is Purple Hart and Bettle kill Pine. She didn't care about the design and left it all up to me. I put the legs on 45 degree angle to the corners and carried the wood theme down the legs too
  11. I still have some fine work left to do, clean up, etc, but I'd like to see what you guys and gals think. These are my first two. These pieces are all SCRAP. I had cut circles out of the wood for other projects and the red and yellow are scrap from those circles. I used yellow hart, purple hart and padouk. The base is walnut that had some bad places, but enough good for this project They are about 5 inches high
