Our Christmas project is underway! Please consider making this a special time for a deserving military family! Our Patriot Turners- I think all our turners are out shopping for presents this week! I was gifted some spalted, maple (I think) and was turning a small bowl as a thank you gift. Normally I turn bowls using a mortice to attach to the chuck but went with a tenon this time. Shaped, sanded and discovered the tiger stripes with beautiful chatoyance Then reverse chucked to finish off the bottom using the chuck jaws in expansion mode, making sure to protect the inside from marring and not applying too much outward pressure. Switched the lathe back on and spun it up... BAM!! Never heard a crack or any indication that the blank was stressed when opening thee jaws. No visible cracks. It simply came apart along a spalted line. I think this would have occurred earlier in the turning process if I had been using a mortice. The chuck jaws were probably holding the piece together. Hey fellow wood turners, been a while since I was on here. Life has kept me busy with kids and grandkids. I am still turning and learning. I have been making all kinds of items, mostly for gifts. I am getting more into lifted boxes and bowls. Been making pens for 15 years now. I have been invited to teach a beginners pen turning class at a local tech school which I am very excited about. The teacher is a good friend of mine and she has students that want to make pens and duck calls. She has a small mini lathe. The only problem is that she has no tools or accessories to go with it. It has a MT 1 taper spindle. If by any chance you have any MT 1 accessories lying around and not using, would you consider donating them for the class? Also looking for Sierra style pen kits and a few duck call reeds. All help will be appreciated. Thank you

He mentioned it last week and had an opportunity to get his vase turned- Beautiful shape and colorization. Mike Waldt has added another beginners guide to lathe tool use with this live demonstration and question/answer video. It is quite long but very informative- The forth in a series on lathe maintenance from Record Power- Expand Your Horizons- A nice kitchen project that involves some not too difficult offset turning from the Woodworker's Journal https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/project-double-offset-bread-knife/ Alan Stratton makes a wooden goblet from walnut- Everyone here knows my fondness for the Easy Wood Tools products ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools ). I use their tools for almost all of the items I turn. The folks at Easy Wood Tools will be the first to acknowledge that having many types of tools (Carbide and HSS) in your arsenal is beneficial. What really bothers me is why many experienced turners tend to diminish the roll of carbide tools and their users. I recently came across 2 videos where the authors compare/contrast carbide to HSS. Both turners are well known and highly respected. Both expounded on what HSS tools can do and what Carbide cannot. In the first video, in my opinion, the presenter hasn't spent equal time learning the ins/outs of Carbide vs. HSS. It's disappointing because his was the first lathe book I ever had. This second presenter is more receptive to the idea that Carbide has advantages. It's still skewed somewhat to the HSS allegiance, but, that is to be expected as the presenter has their own line of HSS tools. END OF RANT. quetion about vet organizations
Fred W. Hargis Jr posted a topic in The Veterans Corner and Causes Forum
I walked into Walmart this morning and the local chapter of the DAV was collecting donations at the door. Around here in the summer this is almost an every 2 week thing, with a different veteran group each time. I don't mind giving them a small donation as i walk past, but I can't help but wonder if I'm just supporting a social club, or does this really benefit/support veterans in some way. Please note: I'm not a veteran and so have no understanding of these setups, but I've heard (often) that the VFW (for example) is just a watering hole. So for hose of you who belong/understand/support these outfits I'd like to know if there are better ways to support veterans causes. I'm likely to keep giving them donations at the door, but still have this nagging question about whether it helps anyone.
