    Sapwood?

So I was milling up some 100 yr old NC barn wood. One of them though still has tacky sap. Any suggestions to work or dry it up for working? Thanks

    Barn wood.

I just talked to a guy about some wood he wants to sell. He said he has 7 pieces 7’ long, 12” wide and 3.5” thick. He said they are old and dry. He thinks they are oak or hickory. He is asking around $100 for all of it. He is going to send me some pictures tomorrow. That would make a lot of bowls if it is any good. He said there is not any rot or cracks. Wish me luck.

    Aging wood

Not my cup of tea (pardon the pun), but in case you are interested. Note the first slide -- run some tests because not all woods react the same. Rustoleum also makes a weathered wood stain, but I've not tried it either. https://www.familyhandyman.com/painting/how-to-age-wood/?pmcode=IVBJJU103&_cmp=DiyTipsHintsNL&_ebid=DiyTipsHintsNL10202017&_mid=176709&ehid=EBC4D8BEC6F08D97A318788DB78D9A1244AF138A/20/#listicle/2/
  5. Apparently a new product http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/varathane/weathered-wood-accelerator/ There was another Rustoleum product that we talked about on WODD forums, but lost that post.

A Side Job for the shop

Seemed to have picked up a side job for the shop. Friend needed some parts made for a coat pole. I looked through the scrap pile, found two chunks about the right size. One was from an old barn rafter, and smelled liked when cut... The other was a cut-off of Walnut. Both were still "in the rough" and needed plane work. The Barn Rafter chunk also had two cut nails still in it. Took an old slotted screwdriver tip, re-grind it into a punch, and drove one on through. The other one was on the edge, and got pried out. Planned both smooth on the faces, wasn't too worried about the edge grain. Got out the OLD B&D sabre-saw, and cut out the profile needed. yep, this is how things get cut out, nowadays. Band-saw is DOA right now, don't feel like trying to rehab it. Clamp things to the bench top, and sabre-saw away the waste. The Walnut chunk all marked up, awaiting the saw.. "Prototype" out in front, and the other two. Getting closer now. Belt sanders to smooth the saw marks, and flatten an edge or two. When the sabresaw goes around a curve, there is a slight bend to the blade. Sanders took away the angled edges. Hmmm, need to add a double bevel to the ends, to fit in the pole's grooves. Well, maybe a hand plane will do the trick? Rough it out with the 5-1/4 Junior Jack, Finesse it up with a #3 smoother. Will need to stain and finish the two "new" arms and install them....

Another Blast from the Past 4

Just two older projects. The table started out as a "Kitchen Office" sort of thing. Daughter had a chair, and needed a small table to match. It also had to fit in a certain spot... Front legs were tapered on two sides ( hand planed) back legs were left square. Top is a glue up, of two pieces of waterbed frame. The rebate where the plywood base went? that is the glue joint, I merely cleaned it up. Frame work under the top? Ah yes, this is what the Dungeon Shop started out as. The slab in the background is the top for the table. Mortise & Tenon for the corners, with glue blocks to help out. Center slat was dovetailed in place, by hand. As for the edges of the top....router maybe? No... These things made a bevel on the edges.... Now, about the second item.....seems a long time past, an old carriage house/ garage decided to fall down. Rot and decay. I was able to scrounge a few planks and beams from it....LOTS of cut nails. Resaw a lot of oak "rafters" watching sparks fly as I found the nails I missed. Was that many. cheap Irwin 10" rip blade. Got enough boards out of it for a chest of sorts. Stained a dark walnut colour ( Daughter liked that shade) frame and raised panel chest. Top had breadboard edges.. Defects, nail holes and all. It has survived 1/2 a dozen moves, an apartment fire, and who knows what else. one panel has a cracked glue joint. Still going strong. Maybe 100 yr old Oak.

    Making "Barn Wood"

Here is a project that I did a couple years ago for my sister. She wanted "Barn Wood" looking boards, and she would paint the wording on them. So I posted the question on another forum, and Keith came to my assistance with this link: http://www.prettyhandygirl.com/how-to-make-new-wood-look-old-weathered-and-rustic/ Here are some pictures of the PIP: Here are the plain boards with the starting of distressing them The start of the "Barn Wood" process The Finished Product, ready to hang on the wall. Thank you for looking.

Had to fire up the old lathe tonight

Picked up a tool box today. inside this $2 tool box was a few wrenches ( still cleaning them) and a couple chisels.. The long one, with the mushroom end needed a handle, AFTER I got rid of the mushroomed part. Had some old Barn Wood scrap, About 2x2 almost square. Trimmed the ends of the blank a bit, found the center on each end. Drove the drive spur into one end, and round the blank off. Then marked where the fancy parts of the new handle would be. Small gouge and a skew chisel to complete. Then a test fit, grind the excess off, test fit, until the handle would drive into the socket part of the chisel Oh, BTW also cleaned up the 1-1/2" wide chisel, but, it didn't need a new handle. The T.H. Wilhelm 1/2" firmer/mortise chisel now has a decent looking handle. Lines were made with the skew chisel. This is one LONG chisel That is a 12" long combo square sitting behind it. Wood was free, the chisels were almost free, That tool box was just $2, and had 8 wrenches in it, a nail set, and these two chisels. Might just be a decent yard sale day.
  11. Got the second front/back panel in and out of the clamps. Added the mending plates at the top, and a cleat for the floor along the bottom. Then just stood it upYep, going to be wee bit bigger than the first one. Then Spent most of today getting some parts made up for the two ends Just imagine two of each of these. And I got the router fixed up to route some more grooves, First one was burned.....Hmmmm, checked the speed setting? Ah, clear down in 3rd gear...moved it up into 6th gear and try again. Much better. Ran a few planes around, to get all these parts to match up. Trimmed a few ends square. Awaiting the bench to be cleared off, before the chopping of mortises begins, again. Cleared off the bench? Weellll I have a blank in the clamps right now.. Ok, so the plan to recycle the old raised panels from the bed frame didn't work out. Needed to make new, larger panels. This is actually two panels, just need to cut them out of this big blank. One board in it needed a little joiner work In this shop, that IS a little joiner. Added a couple 1x3 of barn wood, one on each edge, abd glue it up. Now I just sit back, and watch glue dry.....I'm bushed.
