  1. There is a time and a place for everything and I am glad this transition seems to be to the place you need at the right time. And just to add a smile to your face and hopes that you will have the extra energy to get back in the shop more, here is this morning’s pile of zen…
  2. It’s Friday night, and I have been busy… Test fit the first plantation shutter where it is going to go. As soon as I put it there, the wife says “oh i like the light colored wood (poplar) can we leave it like that? umm… no, you said white it is going to get painted. I’m not remaking it in maple or ash. Crisis averted So far so good, and I am back to doing slats for the other one. That one will be painted too
  3. Well, that’s better. The test fit of the new slats is complete and they overlap like they are supposed to. One more like that to do, then a ton of sanding and paint, then I just have to install and trim out and we will be done with this project.
  4. Well this week I am home and working on the slats for the plantation shutters….. again….. What? You mean they aren’t supposed to form a perfect panel when they are closed? Ugh… At least my spacing measurements were consistent….
  5. Saturday night, project on the bench, sharp handplane, good tunes playing, floor full of shavings…. such happy, much zen
  6. Another nice day out here in Vegas. After rebuilding my dust collection and cleaning the shop last weekend, I am back into build mode on the plantation shutters for the front entryway. So far things are coming along nicely.
  7. I actually like doing beds, those are a lot of fun.
  8. I agree, a good utility sink and a full bathroom are great additions to a shop!
  9. Like @steven newman I have a bunch of stuff, mostly Narex. They work fine just gotta keep em sharp
  10. Been a minute since I was around and had some time. Finally had some free time this weekend to get some time in the shop. Revamping the dust collection has been on the list for a while now as well as organizing the shop and getting some tools into position. I have been working in this space for about a while now and I think I have a good idea about how the workflow needs to be. Still have a few things to iron out but the bulk of it is done. Did some spring cleaning and the shop is finally mostly clean.
  11. I have the room but I only engineered the pad for up to a 4 post lift + car
  12. Well, while the laminates are gluing up for the shutter project, I spent some time turning my second segmented bowl. Mistakes were made, I found out what happens when you really catch and chunks of stuff start flying around. For what it’s worth, the end grain of hard maple is tricky. Mistakes were made, lessons were learned, things were glued back together, and I now own a full face shield.
  13. More bowl stuff currently in the clamps for turning. Going to try to make something with a bit of an angle to the sides this time. Tomorrow starting on the Plantation shutters for the entry way. Should be a fun project.
  14. Mistakes were made, but in the grand scheme of things I will take it as a first attempt. I suspect that straight walls are harder than slanted walls. Learned a couple things about skew chisels and bowl gouges tonight as well. All in all this was actually a fun project and I think I can see my way clear to doing a lot more of this until my scraps go away. Materials for this one are cherry, maple, beech, and oak. The oak turned almost golden which is kind of a weird effect.
  15. One of my first turning adventures was making an Ipe mallet. There were a couple of upsides to this project. I was forced to learn how to sharpen just about every tool in the shop, and I got a mallet out of the deal. Another interesting aside to all of this is that my bandsaw just became a lot more important to me as it is the easiest way to deal with making weird scraps generally the right shape for this type of work.
  16. Well it has been an interesting couple of days out in the shop. I seem to have accumulated a ridiculous amount of scrap wood from my projects. Random offcuts, little pieces of nice wood etc… One of the things that has impressed me is how little scrap @Masonsailor generates and the reason apparently is because he is a prolific woodturner. So after some research, hours of perusing various parts of the forum, reading, and watching some videos on the youtube…. I built a segmented ring jig, and started turning scraps into rings. As an aside, a ShopSmith in drill press mode with the sanding disk is the cat’s pajamas for sanding rings flat for glue-up. This should be a good learning experience or a total disaster, either way it is the start of using up some of the accumulated scrap wood and potentially expanding into another aspect of woodworking.
  17. I totally agree. That is plenty good enough for anything I need to accomplish when working with sheet goods. All the dogs and fence accessories for the table were made in-house as well.
  18. Well the top of the new shop table has been finished up. Multiple coats of danish oil and some wax should hopefully give it a bit of longevity. Using my shop-made dogs and fence I did my first 5 cut to check for square. Everything tracks 90º with a square but careful caliper work puts me -.002” over 11” give or take my ability to actually measure stuff. Still that should be plenty good for anything that I actually need to accomplish. Next up is the cabinet and storage to go underneath and we will get to see how well it really does in a practical application.
  19. Got the final glue up for this MFT done, now just have to flush trim, edge band the top, and get some finish on it, and that part will be done. Progress has been a little slow due to actual work lately but this should solve a couple of issues out here in the shop.
  20. So i have been playing around with an MFT top design for an adjustable height table that I was able to source from home depot online. It has gone from an idea in CAD to real and this is my first full CNC based project. Still needs to be glued up but it is dead on tolerance wise, the interlocking is strong, and it is dead flat in all directions. I have some customization stuff to do on this for sure but the proof of concept is solid
  21. Well, the top is pretty much done and tested 3-4-5 style for square. Looking good so far, hopefully make some more progress tomorrow.
  22. Well it is days like this that I am happy as a clam about the all-weather shop. Started on the MFT top for the height adjustable workbench tonight. I don’t know why I waited so long to get a track saw. It greatly simplifies working with sheet goods and it is every bit as accurate as a good table saw without the hassle of tossing a 3/4 4x8 sheet up on a table saw. I am starting to see why the EU guys don’t care that much able table saws these days. Anyway, got the top cut to 1/16” of final and started in on it with the Shaper Origin. Got a lot of dog holes cut so far and finished cutting to final size and 100% squared up with the shaper so far, have a bunch more dog holes to to tomorrow.
  23. Felt like being lazy this weekend, still recovering from the holidays Spent some time on the computer designing an MFT top for a Husky adjustable height rolling workbench that I have some plans for in the shop. I have needed a mobile cart for a minute and adding some functionality to it seems like a good idea. I will get to building this week. This has bee a fun project so far, The total size of this will be 36” x 64” and it fits on top of a 24”x52” rolling table. The entire project is designed in a manner that it can be done on a CNC and I plan on making the whole thing with the Shaper Origin.
