  • Looks like a sideboard to me. Though usually the antique ones of years past circa 1780 -1880 had mirrors on it and little shelves off the mirrors. Like this:

I'm here for the journey. This is gonna be a fun project to watch. You will be able to get it out of the Dungeon, right?

Top looks great. However I have always heard sheet rock screws are not good for furniture use. No horizontal strength. Plus I always had them snap in hardwood.

Depends on HOW one uses them....

Drawers are all fitted so that they will slide in and out better...do not NEED them to be a "Piston Fit"...merely needs to keep most of the dust out...

So, since those are done..

Laundry Room 30, Stained, plus a rag .jpg

I suppose I had better move that rag...

Laundry Room 30, Stained, without the rag .jpg

That better? I am not staining the back of this ...thing....however, I do need to somehow get this fat body back in here...

Laundry Room 30, Stained, need to get in here .jpg

So that I can stain and wipe down this end of the case...

Will let this smelly mess dry overnight, and see what it looks like...and do any "touch-ups" required..OldManSmiley

Stay tunedcowboypistol1

Ok..this spot..

May Rust Hunt, Where the new case will go .jpg

is where the new "Bench" will be going..

have already started to fill up a drawer..

May Rust Hunt, Storage started .jpg

Bought a $10 cardboard box filled with tools, yesterday...figured this will be better than it sitting upstairs on the Dinning Room Table

Closed up the drawer..opened the can of varnish..and a brush.

May Rust Hunt, Top coated on the top .jpg

Top NOW has a coat of Warm Gloss Poly brushed on. Back did not want to bend well enough to do the lower section..

Letting this thing sit a day...

Stay tuned..

(There IS a LONG set of photos, covering most of the last Rust Hunt finds.....Might start a thread about those, IF anyone wants to read it?)

Laundry Room is closed for a few hours...

Laundry Room, Varnish Day, all done .jpg

Can't get the clothes hamper past this thing..BTW...a coat of varnish has been brushed on to everything...including a second coat on the top..

Corner detail..

Letting this sit a spell...rather boring to sit and watch varnish dry...

Red Cord? Goes over to the drill press...as these 3 needed Rust Bunnies removed...

ok...Top has a second coat of varnish...the rest has a single coat..

May Rust Hunt, Top coated on the top .jpg

Which means that this mess needs to be removed...

May Rust Hunt, Where the new case will go .jpg

So..yesterday...started with removing items and finding places to stash them for a little while..

New Bench, clean-out day 1 set aside .jpg

( This MIGHT be a LONG post..)

Found this thing hiding in the back..

New Bench, clean out day, found a clamp .jpg

Sprayed it down with WD40, hopefully I can get the one threaded part unstuck..

Saw Til..once the 8 screws holding it down were either removed or snapped off..

New Bench, clearing off, saw til gone .jpg

Was then flipped over onto it's back ( sound of rusty saws rattling) and push out of the way. Area it was in was swept clean...Planer was slid down into the now empty spot....the Mitrebox was cut loose, and was hauled over to the work bench, for now...1/2" thick REAL plywood was next...( more screws..and one that did not want to be removed..) and the plywood was set aside for now..

New Bench Clean out, saveable plywood .jpg

Which left..

New Bench Clean out, layer by layer .jpg

A layer of OSB..and MORE screws. Moved the planer over, onto the Tablesaw..By the time I had all the screws and the wood removed..

New Bench Clean out, save these, maybe .jpg

Had the same amount of short, fine thread screws too...I then need to dig up a long 5/16" nut driver bit..

New Bench Clean out, hex headed screws .jpg

And take the metal frames apart...WARNING ( as I found out the hard way) Everywhere there had been a screw, there was now a very sharp burr waiting to snag any finger or hand going buy..Finally..

New Bench Clean out, old metal legs .jpg

Stashed, for now...until I happen to find a use for them...Which left this mess..

New Bench Clean out, headed for the Fire Pit .jpg

Meant I needed to bring a trash bin and a scoop shovel downstairs...use one to load up the other...then haul that back upstairs to the New Improved Fire Pit, that I also needed to build FIRST...

Half the load..

New Bench Clean out, NEW Fire Pit .jpg

Let this burn down a bit, then dump this onto the fire..

New Bench Clean out, second load .jpg

While that burns, went back and swept out the space I just cleared up..

New Bench Clean out, all cleared out .jpg

And, since my back had decided it was QUITTING TIME!

New Bench Clean out, Quitting Time! .jpg

Decided a "Cold One" will do, as I editted all these pretty pictures for Polite Company..

Grandson ( who bought the 12 pack of the beer as my Birthday Present) has offered to come over, and help move the new bench into the just vacated space...Then I can get busy loading it up...

Stay tuned..TwoThumbsUp

Looks like you've got a good game of Tetris going on. The cabinet looks great.

Moving day IN the shop..with a bit of strong arm help...takes 2 people to move the dang thing around, but

24 May Shop Day, bench is moved .jpg

Already has the planer, and the Langdon 72c..

24 May Shop Day, leftovers from old .jpg

Those 1 x 4s are about all that is left of the old bench made of wood...Mitre Box and saw is a Stanley No. 346..

24 Nay Shop Day, Tool chest .jpg

Might just leave the Tool Chest there, for now...Tablesaw is "Stowed away" for now...can be pulled out as needed..

24 May Shop Day, wide open spaces .jpg

We now have a bit of "elbow room" in the shop...so..

24 May Shop Day, NEXT! .jpg

"NEXT!"

That is a great looking bench but I have one question. Why did you not put drawers all the way to the floor utilizing wasted space?

  • Author

Why? 2 words....Dungeon Creek....take a good look at the floor again...

  • Popular Post

Forgot about the flow thru you have going on. Guess you could put everything in boat on floor.

Shelves it is, then.
