January 10Jan 10 Popular Post At least that is what I think these were called.. Details? Moldings are just glued on, feet look like something the Tudors would like..all veneer over plywood...and it has started to peel off,,,drawers have issues,,doors will NOT stay closed...piece is actually a bit too big for the Room that it is in... Milled some planks down...jointed a few edges.. Had already cut them down a bit...to 5' long. Looking for gaps... or, any high spots... Sometimes called a Hook, most times it is called a Crochet...a few whacks with a mallet on the other end of the board to lock this end in place.. Plane is a No. 7c Stanley.. How does one safely trim a LONG plank? closest end only needed about an inch to get squared away..the other end? It is laying on the floor...has a crack right down the middle.. Worked my way through 4 planks today.... 3/4" x 17-1/2" x 60".... Stay tuned..
January 10Jan 10 Popular Post I'm here for the journey. This is gonna be a fun project to watch. You will be able to get it out of the Dungeon, right?
January 11Jan 11 Popular Post Looks like a sideboard to me. Though usually the antique ones of years past circa 1780 -1880 had mirrors on it and little shelves off the mirrors. Like this:
January 11Jan 11 Popular Post So, Bandit, I didn't see a one-line drawing are you replacing the buffet?
January 12Jan 12 Popular Post I was going to offer turning new ones but that may depreciate the value of the piece. Then you could do the mortimer and bore holes for the rounds. It would be solid.
January 12Jan 12 Author Popular Post Legs: 2" x 2" square....tapered the last 1/3 length Waiting on Moose & Squirrel Express to deliver a Plan...still in the "Process" of being drawn up in Single Brain Cell Sketch Up.... Might remove the Pipe Clamps later, today....as I need me tablesaw back.. Might leave the cauls in place for a while... And, so I do not have to shuffle sideways through here... Need to work on legs, next..and size everything else off of them... Stay tuned...
January 12Jan 12 Author Popular Post Yep, the Pipe Clamps came off.. Then the "fun" can begin.. First a Beltsander with 60 grit to go at 90 degrees to the grain...to remove the dried glue and other dirt..Then, the Stanley No. 5c working the diagonals..looking merely to flatten out the high spots....this sort of work, you will never see any see-though shavings.. Goal was to get the top off of my tablesaw, and set aside for now.. It can sit here for a few days, until I need it again.. One plank showed up today.. Need 3 leg blanks out of this...thing.. Dog Legs. maybe? I only need 36" out of this thing...and see what I have...board is 8/4 thick...I only need 1-3/4" square... Hopefully the second one of these planks can get a few better ones..? Stay tuned...
January 13Jan 13 Author Popular Post Trimmed that thing down to 36" strong...and started to joint one edge Plane is "only" 10 years older than I am...Type 17 Stanley No. 6c.... Goal being to flatten a curved edge until it was straight enough to slide along the rip fence...I chose this edge because... Other edge had too much bark to plane through Hmmm....my circular saw can cut all the way through this plank, but the tablesaw comes up 1/8" too low? So, set the rip fence for 1-5/8"....run the plank through, flip it over, run it back through to finish the cut.....repeat 2 more times....then, lay the blanks on their freshly sawn face, run them through a 3rd time to make them 1-5/8" x 1-5/8" square.. Will clean them up a bit, clamp them into a unit, until they settle down... Meanwhile.. Need to repeat the above steps for this "Barn Find" 2 x 6 x 6' plank....that has an issue.. Will saw it off just below that knot...and them again at 36" strong...then saw and process 3 more leg blanks... Stay tuned...
January 14Jan 14 Author Popular Post Second set of 3 leg blanks are milled...I got bored sitting around.... Single Brain Cell Sketch Up is working out the details....may have to sit down and draw a few lines.... Hmmm...Spalted Raised Panels? Hmmm. Salted raised panel drawer fronts? Pine webframes for all the inside works? With 1/4" plywood skins? Frame and raised panels for the 2 doors"? Also with the Spalted stuff...? Maybe have this finished by Easter? Stay tuned

January 14Jan 14 Author Popular Post 1st set of legs are still adjusting to the shop.. Clamped together so that they will stay that way....I hope.. 2nd set of legs? and has 4 rails sitting on them.... that have their tenons milled. Still need a groove to house the Raised panels.. Rough cut enough pieces to make 2 raised panels...one for each end of the sideboard... They needed jointed.. That plane is almost exactly 10 years older than I am....2nd Quarter of 1943.... Had one piece than needed a cup planed off.. Anyway...into the clamps it went... Panel #1 and repeat for Panel #2... I also cleaned up the ROUGH face of one of the 2nd batch of legs...since the plane was already "warmed up" These legs are 36" long, BTW...had a couple spots to clean up.. A few more passes took care of those... Area between the shoulder blades was getting a bit Crampy...time to stop for the day....and pick dried glued off of me fingers....may have to do a B EE RR U N later? Busy morning? Stay tuned
January 17Jan 17 Author Popular Post Ok...Laid out a mortise.. Chopped out the waste... Dry fitted. Repeat for the lower mortise.. Next the tricky part...mill a groove between the 2 mortises... Tried the Stanley #45...it was not doing it...so..."We have ways"... And, since the rails also needed a groove milled...just reset the fence a bit.. That will do for one day....stay tuned for Friday's Follies...
January 17Jan 17 Author Popular Post Friday's Follies: Began with.. Leg #2 needing planed smooth...then, Top mortise laid out, chopped out, dry fitted. then repeat for the lower Mortise... And dry fitted up...I also milled the groove... needed the tablesaw back...as those rails were all 1/2" too long...milled to the correct length and a new tenon was milled....forgot to allow for the raised panels to sit IN the grooves... Paised Panel #1...is out of the clamps, ends are squared...so... It needed both faces cleaned up....dried glue blobs were ground off with a 60 grit Beltsander...then.. Stanley No. 5c was working across the grain, taking down the rougher stuff.... Finally was almost flat enough that.. Stanley #3 could work off the high spots....before.. A bit of fine tuning....one panel done did... Will work this one over, tomorrow....2 hours IN the shop today....toes were cramped up, shop fan did not help...swept the shop, and trudged upstairs.. Stay tuned..
January 17Jan 17 Author Popular Post Body is paying for that 2 hour stint IN the shop, this morning.... have errands to run....then see how things go....
January 17Jan 17 Author Popular Post Little over an hour in the shop.... That shop floor WAS swept clean BEFORE I started this morning.... Film @ 2300 hrs...( Boss has errands to be run...)
January 18Jan 18 Author Popular Post Panel #2..the before.. Then the usual stuff with the sander and the planes Almost done... Couple of high spots to level out... Took a while to get both faces done did....even went back and leveled out a spot on Panel #1... Then the ends were squared up... Because, it works better that way.... Zero Clearance Overlay....Tilt the blade about 15 degree to port...first trip through all 4 edges...checked the fit...was off about a blade thickness, reset and try again... Sits all the way down into the groove, now... Both panels are now "raised"....saw marks will need to be cleaned up.. Dry fit... Looking down from the top of the assembly, no glue, yet And from the feet... No rattles were heard.... One more task... Need to add tapers to the legs. Then start on the other end of the Sideboard.... Went and bought a few sticks of 1 x 3 x 6' Pine.....need to start laying out web frames...and what does not show will be pine, those that will show will be more of that Spalted stuff... Stay tuned...
