January 20Jan 20 Author Popular Post Decided to just do the other end...legs needed some work.. This one just needed one face cleaned up... Then laid out and chopped a mortise, and dry fit.. Repeat for the other mortise... And..since these rails already had their grooves milled.. Tested the fit of the panel between the rails...which left... One of those 3 blanks need to be milled up...let the worst of the 3 clamped up tight as I can.. Needed a bigger clamp...set this mess aside.. This is after I planed the curves OFF of all 4 faces...then 2 more mortises needed chopped out...and then both legs got their grooves milled...dry fit? And we have a problem...legs are supposed to be 36" long....NOT almost 38" We have ways... 1927 Disston D-115... So..now I can stand both end assemblies up, and out of the way.. Awaiting Detail Work... Stay tuned
January 20Jan 20 Author Popular Post Yesterday, although it was a Monday...needed a plank cut down..so it can get used to the shop... But...1 x 6 x 58" plank was a bit curved...and I needed a straight edge to press against the Rip fence... Other edge had bark still attached...this edge had a bump about half way down the line....Tried the No. 7c...was having issues once it got over the "speedbump" No. 8c? Had no such issues.. Took a bit, but.. Speed bump is now gone...then over to the tablesaw..1-5/8" widths Let these sit a day or so...best one will get trimmed to 56"....and be part ( that shows) of the web frame across the top, under the Sideboard's Top Panel. The other 2 will get cut for the show parts elsewhere... Also haul 2 KIWIPINE planks to the shop, also to get them used to being down there... 3/4 x 3" x 6' Clear Pine Trying to decide on which parts to start on, next... Stay tuned..
January 20Jan 20 Author Popular Post Did a wee bit of puttering around...getting the 2 middle legs worked over...Found out.. When using a Bandsaw to cut a taper..and it turns Ash a DARK Chocolate Brown....that blade just MIGHT need to be tossed out, and a new one installed? Future site of a Mortise? meanwhile up at the top... Ash front piece meets up with the ends, but go over the middle 2 legs...then a pine frame behind it... Stay tuned...
January 22Jan 22 Author Popular Post New blade installed..results? Used a bit of WD40 while installing the new blade... Blank wanted to twist on me... These are the middle 2 legs,,, Have to start the frames next time in the shop...Lots of grooves and tenons to mill up Rails need to be 1-1/2" wide....not 3"...Will have to run the rip blade a couple times....then change to the 1/4" dado blade...and run some grooves... Stay tuned
January 23Jan 23 Author Popular Post Worked a bit on one end assembly.. Legs needed 2 tapers, each...then the saw marks get planed away.. Then the router added a detail... Both outside corners got a small cove milled... Nost of the day in the shop was spent at the Bandsaw...changed out the dull blade for a new blade...make 4 cuts with it...plane the tapers smooth, Add the cove detail... This morning....puttered around Involve this thing.. 6" Dado set, just the 2 main blades...Need 1/4" wide by 1/2" deep grooves milled in 4 56" long Stiles.. Mainly was working on the web frame to goes between the case and the Top of the case...needed 4 rails for that... 2 needed thinned down a bit..from 4/4 down to 3/4" thickness....tablesaw to peel most of that off...then saw mark removal.. Dado blade helped do the Tenons...but, a "Chin-powered" chisel to finesse the tenons to size...and the bandsaw to cut a couple notches.. to fit around the corners of the legs... Then the Boss decided WE had to go to the store... Stay tuned...
January 24Jan 24 Author Popular Post Laundry Detail this morning.. 1 Mortise was chopped...then a couple sub-assemblies were done did...some were glued and clamped...some were simply clamped in place, and one was simply screwed down... I wanted to establish how the door opening will be...I did glue on a lip to the bottom rail of the End assembly, for the plywood floor to sit on.. Mortise was into the leg on the left... End of the webframe is just clamped in place, no glue, yet... Where the front Stile meets the end rail, there is clamps and glue going on... A middle rail was added.. Screws can still be removed if need be... Waiting on the Washer to get done, and then into the Dryer....will see what the shop feels like this evening...outside? 8 above 0, mostly cloudy degrees..

January 31Jan 31 Author Popular Post 2 hours IN the shop..on a Friday? Removed all the clamps that were in the last post...but, kept them handy..That 6' pipe clamp is elsewhere...Stand the mess up on the completed end..needed room to work in..Task: Was to build the webframe for the back of the case..Long parts are called Stiles. The 4 short pieces are the Rails...cut to length, with a tenon on each end...glue and clamps. Tenons sit in a groove. This is actually the bottom stile...as the top Stile is already installed....fun part...trying to place 4 tenons into a groove at the same time...while trying to add ONE clamp...something was just bound to shift a bit..Yep, THAT one...loosen the clamps a tad...whack the part into it's new home...let this sit a bitNext task? have 2 legs that needed tapered on 2 faces...and they each needed a cove milled, as well...Laid out a taper...bandsaw the line...This is right off of the Bandsaw...cleaned up with a few planes....rotate, repeat...until both legs have their tapers nice and smooth...cleaned off all the marks....saw or pencil..with a #3 Stanley...Then the Cove...bit was still set up in the Craftsman Router....Legs are done did...time to glue them to the case...with a mallet assist...and a few more clamps...Let this sit a day..This is the back of the case...which will be covered up with a 1/4" plywood sheet...Stay tuned...
