May 1, 20224 yr Popular Post Pretty cool so far Bandit. For ash, that is some beautiful grain showing on the top. Great job on the glue-up match too. Gonna do something fanciful on the legs and aprons? Kinda' your trademark...well besides the Bandit Brand. Hope that poor top didn't bellow much under the iron.
May 3, 20224 yr Author Popular Post I didn't want to...go to the shop on a Monday.....waited as long as I could...but...decided to set up to mill 6 tenons.. Once I laid out what I was going to remove....leaving a 8mm tenon, about 1/2" long...set the fence, and blade height.. Last pass each time, is with the board against the fence.... Then rotate the board as needed... Same for the other ends.. Then reset the saw...move everything over on top of the saw....as I need to space on the end of the bench.. All set up for Tuesday Shop Time. Mortise Jig set up... 1st mortise is laid out....visegrips to keep things steady in the jig... Sits right on top of the bench's leg....NO BOUNCE allowed...will see how long each mortise takes...and how many Guinness Stouts it will take to recover Stay tuned.....tomorrow might be a "fun" day....

I'm going to be moving a 'keeper' TS into the basement in a month or so. Thinking get the shop-vac rigged, negative cabinet pressure. Possibly a box fan in the window. Steve, how do you address dust in the basement?
May 3, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Work area... Layout tools.. First chops... Clean out the chips, go back through 2 more times...until I THINK I am deep enough... Took about 20 minutes...repeat.. Hour total time...3 mortises done...kept going.. 20 minutes for the fourth one.....did not feel like taking the clamps off, just yet...went ahead with the other front leg,,, Shoulders were hurting...that is a LOT of whacking, going on Decided to stop, sharpen the chisels up...and go upstairs for Lunch.. Depending on how the area between the shoulder blades feels...that might be it for today.. Stay tuned...

May 4, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Wednesday = Work Day..2 hours on the clock...had 2 sticks to work on.. One gets tenons, the other gets a dovetail..Tail... After a try with the bandsaw, went with a hand saw..and a chisel..used the tenons to lay out for a mortise.. And hope I get it deep enough.. Almost..had a crumb or 2 down inside..next..mark out a tail... Thinking this was a bit TOO fat...dovetail, not the hand... Recut to just take out the red lines...then lay out the socket.. I need to LEAVE them black lines... Dry fit...this leg is done....try a few other things for the other leg's socket Stand it up in the vise, same saw...wanted to get back into the corners, though.. Called a Kerf Chisel... Got that all chopped out, tail fits...drawer opening parts are done..one more mortise to chop.. THE LAST MORTISE is done....I can even do a full dry fit... And find spots that will need a bit of fine tuning, before the glue goes on.. Now, about that grain direction....which would look better... About time to set this jig aside... All those "extra" holes? So I can adjust the jig to fit. Along with 2 countersunk holes for the 2 screws. Need to move everything off the bench, move that dry fit over onto the bench...and start milling parts for the drawer... Stay tuned..
May 5, 20224 yr Popular Post Looking right smart Bandit. So whatcha' going to build the second half of May?
May 5, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Might just go Rust Hunting.... This morning....knocked all the parts apart....set the table top on the cleaned off bench... Had details to clean up. . Spots like this....sharp chisel pared this off....cleaned up the tenons, too Spread some glue on those tenons...and mallet assist the legs into place..one leg kept trying to twist The other side was next....then a LOT of mill work,,,, A better looking drawer front, 2 drawer sides..and a back for the drawer...which spent a little extra time at the saw... Figured 7/8" was a bit too thick for the back of a drawer....resawn to ~1/2" thick.. Milled 2 runners for the drawer to slide on.. Got in to too big of a hurry...this used to be on the outside.... not good...reglue and clamp on the INSIDE Lesson learned....side #2 had the runner CORRECTLY installed on the first try ...will have to come back later, and scrape the outside bare to bare wood... Needed 2 strips, to guide the drawer on it's way in, or out...so.. And there they are....swept the floor, and headed for LUNCH As that was as far as I could go, today.. Stay tuned...might get the base completed..tomorrow
May 6, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Friday's Follies....a glue up.. Only place big enough...started to use an F style clamp,,,,not getting the job done We have ways. Nothing talks back to these...then, I needed to rotate this mess to the floor...FUN fun... A size 13 boot to move the tablesaw OUT of the way helped....then double check for square.... Got 2 out of 4 corner blocks installed...and ran out of the right length screws Well...they are also known as glue blocks... You might want to tip-toe as you walk by When a box of the right length screws arrives, I'll finish install..in the back 2 Tomorrow is the start of "Drawer Build 101" Maybe...we'll see Stay tuned
May 7, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Bad part of leaving something on the shop floor, when the Gulley-washer comes through.. Muddy Dungeon Creek.. Feet got a little damp...clamps have been removed... Drawer front needed jointed...before it would fit.. Drawer sides needed the same treatment.. At least they will match....next...re-arrange the shop a bit...tablesaw out of the way.. Router table out where I can use it...had enough chopping by hand, for now.. Fence has Start & STOP lines...had to move the fence a few times, but.. Both ends are done...then use these to lay out and saw.. Then the chisels can get to work...first dry fit? Had "crumbs" in the back, holding things out...by the time both front corners were done... I think I got it, now. That "step" at the drawer front? It is a "stop", to keep the drawer from going in too far (never to return..) Decided to reset the Stanley 45...as it was still set up for "bead work"....needed to change back the groove work.. 1/4" groove, set in 1/4" from the bottom edge of the sides and front of the drawer... So...tomorrow, maybe.. I can jig up to get "Groovy" 2 hours was just about enough, for today need a nap. Next time..I'll run the grooves, and see about a dado for the drawer's back to sit in.. Stay tuned..
May 8, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Had to go to the basement to retrieve an item....couldn't help meself.. Set up a jig.. Once the depth was adjusted just right.. And, it started making "Noodles"...the 2 sides soon followed... An old candle helped out, made things go faster... Thought maybe this would be rough to do....3 minutes later... The only "issue"? Dang shavings go everywhere..set up a second Stanley 45 as a dado plane.. Yes, I do have TWO such planes... So...maybe tomorrow, leg willing, I can mill a dado on the back ends of the 2 sides, to house the thin back. And...this was FUN to do! Stay tuned....

May 8, 20224 yr Popular Post I get worn out just thinking of all the fun Bandit has, down in the dungeon. Ya know, Steve, things might have been a little easier had you not fired Igor.

May 9, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Dados have been milled...had to find a way to clamp the sides so they will stay put.. A stop block and 2 clamps seemed to work. Spurs on the Stanley 45 are not the best...wound up using a dovetail saw to cut the walls of the dados.....then the 45 went to work...the Stanley #71-1/2 then did the clean-up.. As the 45 wanted to tilt a bit... Dry fit with the drawer back....too tall, too wide....3 dry fits later..drawer FINALLY slid into the table base's opening....the back corners of the drawer get a "starter bevel".. Makes it easier to start a full drawer into the table...checked the dry fit for square... Will do for now... Had a sheet of 1/4" plywood on hand....way too long, and way too narrow....trip to Lowes before they closed for Sunday....bought a 1/4" x 24" x 24" panel....$7.38 Cut the panel to size, to join in the dry fitting.. Will do, for now.. Stay tuned
May 9, 20224 yr Author Popular Post Monday, or not....needed a laundry list of things done... This mess needed cleaned off, and put away.... Task 1 done. Then needed a couple tools set back out... Have a use for each... Drilled and counter sink....then recheck the drawer back...was a hair too long, trimmed that... Glue and clamps next.. A bigger square was needed... Once this read "square" in both corners..I could attach the bottom to the back.. That combo square was need to draw a line. Set this aside...and work on Task #3 North Brothers Screwdriver...Back two corner blocks needed their screws installed...Next? Task #4: drill the slots to attach the base to the top....then, Task #5? Guides for the drawer...one was the right thickness..the other? Needed thinned down a bit...far end was tapered...planed to remove the taper... Then a bead of glue and a few clamps...and that was quite enough for a Monday Afternoon....about 90 minutes, counting that clean up.... Will wait until later...stay tuned..
