November 3, 20205 yr Popular Post Well, the Christmas Gift Exchange list is out.....I have to find a present for my Grand daughter-in-law...... Bought about 25bft of Quarter Sawn Ash, today.... There are 11 boards in that stack..average width is just under 6"....all are around 3/4" thick. Hmmmmm, how about a Blanket/ Hope Chest build? Frame and panel? Or maybe a "6 board" style? been a while since I built a chest....maybe see what I can come up with? Give things about a week, or so...while the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up works things up into a "Plan" have to work around the snipes, though. grain looks decent enough....fellow did have a rack of these boards, so I might go back IF I need any more... Dovetailed corners? or, Tongue & Groove corners? Raised of flat panels....Bread board ends on a lid? Stay tuned..
November 3, 20205 yr I've enjoyed making blanket chests in the past - I am definitely tuned in for this one Steven!
November 3, 20205 yr Author Popular Post First day's work session is in the "books"....I'm sore, right between the shoulder blades, toes are crampy....hauled 2 planks to the shop...and set out a few tools.. Had a few knots to work around...wasn't quite up to hand sawing things, today.. These two...one on the left? have a way to get around it...one on the right? Firewood. Will have to see where the cuts will be...Not much use for the wainy edge... tablesaw to rough cut the planks...looking at 23" long, or so....then rip cut at 2-5/8" wide...soon had 8 blanks for the legs/corners Yep, there is that knot, again...we have ways.. Say good bye, knot. Foot detail, 4" above the floor, the curve starts...leaving a 1" square foot... First one is a pattern, to mark out the other 7... Thought about using the Stanley 45's tongue cutter....way too dull...used the tablesaw instead.. Corner joint. Times four. I first ripped down the tongue side, one, to remove the mess left by the Stanley 45...and to narrow the ends a bit...next? I needed a groove to house the raised panels in...will come back later, and do a mortise. Will use "Haunched Tenons" on the rails... rails? Well, right now, there are the 4 rails for the end of the chest...and they also got a groove milled.. Only one edge will get a groove milled..helps when I am NOT going against the grain... And this is what I managed to mill, today.....big pile of sawdust under the saw, and a pile of shavings to sweep up.. I think that will do, for one day? I'm pooped... May start on panel glue ups, as soon as I figure out what size to make them.... Stay tuned Edited November 3, 20205 yr by steven newman

November 4, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Roh-kay, Raggy...Day 2 coming up....and going to be another long one..Needed parts made, tenons milled, more grooves ploughed, mortises chopped....and a dry fit or two...started at 1100hrs....ended at 1430hrs....Hauled one plank to the shop today....tablesaw to make a couple cross cuts.. then, reset the fence for a few rip cuts.. First set didn't look too hateful....but.. Second rip had..."Issues" so, cross cut at the red line...then make the other three rail look the same... Along with a pair of dividers....that knot MIGHT cause some trouble? Tenons....test cuts to fit... These are rails for the ends of the chest, notice the one tenon? Was a bit too thin, lowered the blade for a fatter look...then the 2 dividers.. Then the 4 rails for the front and back frames got their tenons milled... Stanley 45 was still set up..got the bench clamp set.. Wanted a better edge to run the 45 along, so.. A few passes with the Jack plane smoothed things right out.. Then the 45 could do it's thing... I also used the Wards 78, to add a small bevel along the inside edge of the grooves... parts were laid over onto the tablesaw..where I could keep track of them Long rails done, then the dividers.. There's that dang knot, again.....ok, everything that needed a groove or tenon made is done...time to do a few mortises.. Mortise jig...simple and quick...set up the items.. All set? Not quite,,,needed to lay out the mortise, and to help that out, I needed a Haunched tenon milled... Short section fills the groove. Like this.. While the actual tenon goes a bit deeper. Not too bad up at the top..however, the bottom needed a step made.. Because the bottom rail does not go all the way to the end....make a saw cut where the rail stops...then a chisel.. Like this. Was having issues with fat tenons...we have ways.. Ran this across a few times, on both faces..tenon now fits..test fits.. Not too bad? The rails get a divider right in the center...had to find the center point, lay out the mortises, and chop those out...haunched tenons not needed, though.. remember to not only label which is the inside face, but also number each corner...most importantly, also READ those markings...try a full dry fit.. So, this will be either the front, or the back of the blanket chest....need to do a few panel glue ups...once I know the sizes needed.. Somewhere in all of this, today... Seem them corners on the parts are a bit SHARP....made a nice "L" shaped hole...that wanted to leak everywhere... Figured I had enough "FUN" for one day..time to stop Stay tuned....
November 5, 20205 yr Popular Post You are off to the races on this Steven. It is looking mighty good for your efforts
November 6, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Well, last night i had Laundry Detail...so, each trip to the basement...I also snuck a little woodworking in....after sitting Frame #1 over out of the way, first.. And set up parts for Frame #2....each trip to the laundry....washer started = 2 mortises chopped.....washer done, load dryer = 4 more mortises done....dryer done = camera at the ready, get some measurements...and then haul the loaded hamper back upstairs....leaving this in the jig.. This morning? Boss want to go shopping...and I needed a nap when we finally got back home...slept right through a couple youtube videos, even... Finally, able to sneak off to the shop for a while....managed to get an entire 2 hours in... hauled a 6' plank to the shop... Needed parts to make a couple panels with...crosscuts made a stack.. At 5-7/8" wide..they were either too narrow, or too wide...made a few rip cuts... If I just glued two of these together, I'd come up short of the 12-3/8" width I needed...so..tried something else...reset the rip fence, ran the just ripped edge against the fence.. which left a stack of these 1-3/4' wide fillers...one final pass the smooth the edges of the fillers...and do a little lay out.. 3 boards at 3-1/2" + one board at 1-3/4" push these together.. And this one is ready to glue up...had a couple dowels handy to help out... Then spread some glue..add a few clamps.. Then set this aside, repeat for the other panel...and set it aside... Frame on the bench came over to join them....back to chopping...getting better at that.. Even the haunch fits better.. Turn the this end for end, and start on the top of the leg.. Had a brain cramp, as to what part went where...got that straightened out...and got the other leg done.. Set this aside with the rest ( didn't even NEED a clamp to hold it together, even) and just got started on the last frame... Chisel and I were having "issues"...decided to just stop for the night...notice anything new about the feet? Timer said I had 2 hours in the shop....that will be quite enough, for one day.. Stay tuned..

November 6, 20205 yr Author Popular Post Hmmm...Day 4 is in the books...and another 2 hours of shop time... had 3 more mortises to do... These only need to go 1/4" deeper than the groove....doesn't take very long, now that the chisel is sharpened up, again... About as neat as I tend to get in a mortise...burn mark from the old bandsaw blade.. New blade cuts much better....soon had the last frame done.. So it got stashed over with the rest of the "parts" Need to mill 12 parts, to make 4 panels with. 3 boards arrived in the shop...the Good.. The Bad.. And the ugly...which was hiding behind the good one...how ugly? the black mark is a HUGE knot....that this junky end piece barely covers...what a waste... Again...cross cut on the saw, until a "Dirty Dozen" was done.. All different widths, most were even tapered...straightline rip for one good edge....reset to 3-5/8" wide...and run the other edge... wind up with 12 1 x 2s....will sort through 16 of them, to find the best looking 4.... This time around, I also needed to plane the edges, for the glue ups.. Another use for that jig...then lay out 3 wide parts, and one skinny part, trying for the best looking grain match.. Close enough? before I could do the glue up...had to release two panels from the clamps...kind of needed them. I can clean and square these two up..tomorrow....I also needed cauls, this time around... To keep things FLAT...until the glue cures.....this is #3....I was able to also glue up #4 panel......but,,,not enough clamps to glue up the last 2... Always tomorrow, eh? tent/Shed out back has a new tarp on the roof....zip-tied in place....worked harder at that, than in the shop....10' x 24' tarp...not fun.. Tomorrow, I try to glue up the last two panels..and maybe do a little panel raising...may take longer than 2 hrs.....(Today was 1400 to1600hrs...) stay tuned

November 7, 20205 yr Popular Post Whew! I am so exhausted. Time for an ice cream sandwich and some mindless TV watching. LOL
November 7, 20205 yr Popular Post Well, I cut and made a small tray yesterday - took me all day what with breaks and such... This is really going together fast Steven. Are you using a set of plans, going from a previous chest you've made, or? I have made 3 or 4 that looks like they would be the same as you are building. Got my plans from NYW. Will you be putting a cedar liner in this?
November 7, 20205 yr Popular Post I'd been whining for years how I wanted a bell Jet Ranger helicopter. Well this year that's what I got for my anniversary My lovely missus bought me a Bell Jet Ranger Helicopter.
November 8, 20205 yr Author Popular Post ^ Pictures, or it didn't happen? Apparently....when the shop time goes over 3 hours...trouble begins.....by the time 3.5 hours had gone by....couple walls have bruises from things getting thrown...cussing was enough to make an Old China Marine blush.... Anyway...Day #5....started out decently enough....had joint a few more edges...and needed extra cauls.. There are cauls on the backside, too...managed to get panel #5 and #6 glued up... And set aside...and, since the clamps came from #4 and #4....decided to square the ends up on all four of the panels ... And, just so everything was on the same page, as to square.. Mitre gauge as well. was "fun" doing these cuts...started with the gauge in front of the board, go halfway, shut the saw down, move the gauge to behind the panel, and complete the cuts...Then cleared off the saw...laid a frame on the saw...and two panels....after checking for fit.. marks show how deep the grooves go...just need the panel to fit inside the marks,,and not drop on through.. then, take one panel to the cleared of bench...and fit a jig around the panel, so I can clamp the panel down.. jack plane to flatten (or at least try) and clean up the glue joints...dug out another plane.. Stanley #4,Type 10..with it's brand new handle...Paul Sellers raises a panel using just a plane like this....we have ways.. Draw a pair of "stop lines", where the bevel will ( or is supposed to )stop... Instead of going across the grain, you go at an angle...working back from the edge until you hit the upper line,, A little rough, and un-even...come back across the grain.. To smooth the bevel down to the lower stop line. do both ends first...then the long grain edges get laid out ( after re-doing the jig a bit) Glue joint is trying to cause trouble...had to move the jig back a bit.. Had to remove the backstop...and get all but the last inch back from the edge of the bench...time for the next planes.. yep, it does fit the groove..plane is a Wards/Stanley#78...Block plane for fine tuning, and clean up.. Going with the grain, the spur is not needed, nor wanted...Block plane then adds a slight bevel...going across the grain.. Spur is rotated down. It cuts the fibres ahead of the iron...first, I drag the plane backwards and let just the spur do a little line... Then just plane until you hit the depth stop, and then check for fit.. One more to go....was reclamping things, when....snap...that glue joint that was acting up...broke apart...joint both edge..had a HUGE gap right in the middle,,,then try to re-glue and clamp the thing up Circled area is the repair...waiting on glue to cure.....again Guess this will have to do, for today....1200hrs until 1530hrs....tomorrow, we go back to just 2 hour days Stay tuned Edited November 8, 20205 yr by steven newman
