For The Newbies-

When you start to turn bowls, you generally have two options for obtaining wood. Buy the mostly dried blank or find a freshly cut tree. In either case, unless you turn the bowl from start to finish in one sitting, drying the wood between turnings may be necessary. Rick Turns found a cool and inexpensive way to slow the drying process and reduce the chance of checking and cracking-

For those wondering about purchasing Easy Woods Tools contact Jim, either here or call.  Got some slushy funds this week and decided to order a few chisels and try them out.  He was very helpful in picking out the correct chisels for the work I do and where I store them when done.  They should be here in a few days but I have a busy schedule with my carport remodel so may not get to use them for awhile.  

Enjoyed chatting with him but my time was short, I called from work.

A tip on carbide. Clean out the screw and socket around cutter after each use and rotate the cutter if it is one of the round ones. If you do not do this you will eventually have a stuck screw and will have to break the carbide to remove it

Thanks, this is what we do on the metal lathe at work as well.  Course we can put oil on it and let it soak being that it is metal and not wood all around.

@Gerald Thank You! And, thanks for tips on the carbide tool screw. I read somewhere that turners were gently heating the screw/cutter to loosen them. I'm not sure EWTs recommends that- maybe @Jim from Easy Wood Tools can add some advice here.

@HandyDan Thank You! I was surprised at how dark the grain became- especially as the chunk of walnut was originally destined for firewood.
