In my travels in Ukraine I had the opportunity to speak with a retired Soviet Union counter intelligence agent.  Was interesting to hear how they intercepted, discovered, and in some cases set up our agents in the field.  During Soviet times everyone was watching everyone all the time.  Think paranoia in extreme.  If you lied about where you were from, while you were being held they would call someone from that city / town / villager.  Your story best check out.  Now if you had hacked off someone there an that person had it in for you, you know it, you get screwed.  Hell of system!

Thanks a ton Aaron, appreciate that greatly, you are right, it's wonderful he even feels like working with the ol man at this point, but hey, Covid does have it's benefits. If it weren't for that he'd be out with his buddies around town riling up folks and starting a game of B-Ball at the local park.

I'll take it however I can get it at this point, if he has his way, I got him for another two years, then he's gone. The last of my chicks.

The top is done with a nice soft comfortable edge.

 

 

 

The drawer is fitted and the runners are waxed, smooth it is!

Atta, boy, John.  It is good to see that relationship and long after you are gone, he'll have that memory and telling his grandchildren.  Maybe, even working with his son.  I hope you get to see that.  Nice desk.  Like Lew, can hardly wait to see the finish.

Thank you sir, I greatly appreciate that, truly. It's a very stout desk, short on fancies, but long on stoutness, we made it in the style of the old desks you'd see in a school for teacher perhaps, simple but government issue strong! Given that, I do hope it does last for his kids, thanks again Steven.

It's been one heck of a H-E double toothpicks year Gerald for me personally, since my health dove down June of 2019, it has been a long time for the body to just start feeling normal again, after the docs got my routine down, and now I am feeling about 80 percent and pretty good right now, my motivation is coming back again, and my son has been a big part of that motivation as well, I am feeling like there isn't much time with him, a year and a half if he decides to up and serve our country as he says he wants to do, all the sudden, life just flew by. My chicks are flying the coup.

Gorgeous job on the desk! It's great to be able to work with your son, isn't it? Don't let him get away without making the matching chair, though. 

Your comment about the drawers brought to mind a conversation between my sister and I just yesterday. She going to be remodeling her 1958 kitchen. Said she'll be so glad to get rid of those drawers because "they just had those old wooden sticks for the drawers to slide on." I held my tongue. I wanted to tell her that not even the best metal ones will last 68 years. Oh well. She's 68 herself. She won't be around to know.

Cut the door a tad oversize, then planed to exact fit. Below, door doesn't fit, the frame isn't square.

 

 

I canted the blade a little to also bevel the latch edge a tad for a nice fit, just as you would when you hang a full size door.

 

 

A very tight fit for now, I have the Soss barrel hinges on order, once I get them in my hands, I'll be able to tell exactly how much more we need to shave off the latch side, including wood movement.
