February 26, 20197 yr Popular Post I thought you were supposed to, like, take it easy for a few days? Great watching this come together - but no way am I sharing this thread with SWMBO, not even to show her the pics!
February 26, 20197 yr Popular Post Steve, you should explain that Igor does the work while you supervise. Or, has he been demoted back to janitorial duties?
February 26, 20197 yr Popular Post Steve that is really looking good . Sure do hope you don't get into trouble working on Monday

February 27, 20197 yr Author Popular Post About all I got, today...back still hurting....cut up enough good lumber for 2 drawer sides... Ripped them for width...top one needed a little off the top, bottom one was too wide.. Checked for fit...hauled the other 1 x 6 x 8' to the shop...wasn't pretty needed to find 2 more sides, and 2 backs...and miss stuff like this.. Big, old knot...was causing things to bend...cut the better parts out, and to size.. Second set of sides needed a little extra work.. Lightest Jointer I have...to get rid of wavy saw marks....then squared the ends...Hate 1/2 blind dovetails...a bit out of practice? Second side was a little better.. Couple more, I might get the hang of these....stashed this thing out of the way.. Grabbed the parts for the second drawer....got one side done....Suppertime!. Back was having "issues"...so, stashed the drawer Will try to do the last side...tomorrow. then grooves, dados, and a wee bit of assembly... Moving at the speed of smell...stay tuned
February 27, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Drawer building 101...updated version... Drawer fronts had a "Router Stop Line" I set the front down into the vise, until the line is even with the jaws' tops Set the depth of cut on the router... Everything else is free hand. Base of the router hits the top of the vise, to keep things from getting too deep. Spacings are by eye.. Someday, I need to get a face shield...removed the front from the vise, and make a knife line across.. Grab a few chisels, and a mallet.. And do a little hand work.. So they will look like dovetails... Then use these to mark out, cut and chisel the matching part.. Bandsaw to cut, leave the lines... Do a test fit. And that is how this type of dovetail gets done..in my shop... Which leaves the other tasks to build a drawer...like a groove in the sides, for the bottom panel to reside in.. This time around, I needed to get out the Stanley 45, as there was an issue with the plough plane.. Arms were too long. So..grooves are done...need a place for the back to go.. tablesaw took a few swipes, used the board for the back to lay out the dado...leave the lines, then a test fit.. Dry fit the front, both sides and the back....to find out how long to make the back...and cut a plywood panel for the bottom of the drawer...took a few test fits.. Then, dados need pilot holes.. Then flip over.. And run a countersink bit. Then, spread some glue on the dovetails.. And in the dados....add clamps where they press against the sides..and.. Attach the back with some screws....slide the plywood into place, check for square....both side toe in a hair, better than the other direction... Mark for screws.. Screws, but no glue. And place this in a safe place, and allow the glue to cure.. hey, at least it fits! There would have been two drawers done...except one drawer side had "issues" One end was doing the splits.....tried to fix it.....wound up going to Lowes, and buying a short 1 x 6 to replace this firewood need to sand the fronts smooth, before the handles can go on....may cobble up a jig to locate the holes for the handle bolts. Stay tuned...
February 28, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Second drawer is now completed...I also picked up a decent 1 x 8 x6' board..just in case. May start in on the #3 drawer...tomorrow, maybe. Wedding ring went MIA this evening, again...cold fingers will do that...plane the bottom edge of Drawer #1 so it closes better into the case...had a slight step between the front and the sides... idea of the router? mainly to hog most of the waste out, then the chisels can clean things up. had just about enough fun, for one day... stay tuned
February 28, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Basically, I took today off....letting the back settle down... Will have to gang all three drawers up, to save set ups....Maybe by Saturday...I get get them milled? Stay tuned..

March 2, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Ok, "vacay" is over...had 4 boards to haul to the shop...1 at a time.....got 3 out of 4 down there. each was crosscut before the next one was brought down...some spots just needed to be tossed out.. Stuff like this...and this was the "good" side...Got a few blanks for drawer fronts... Will pick the best 3, fourth one becomes a drawer back...I also got all 6 drawer sides cut to 17" The third 1 x 8 x 8' wasn't very good, so I had to bring the 1 x 8 x6'er down, instead...was able to get the other two drawer sides, and another blank for the backs Marked the sides for width, set up the fence on the saw....some of the blanks had issues....we have ways.. Then, checked the blanks for fit.. As I went..went back, sorted out the fronts...labeled for "top" , "bottom" and "inside" Noticed more of those "issues", also, not one matched the other in width...reset the fence, skimmed a bit off, and ran the other two blanks through.. "The Chosen 3"....some of the "defects" will go away, when the rebates are done...The two drawers that are already done? back corners got rounded up.. Makes getting a full drawer into the case a little easier...there was a step up..between the fronts and the sides...was That "T" square laying there? Well, I made a jig, so all the handles will line up.. seemed to work. Dug out the router bit I'll need in the morning.. As I need to run coves, before anything else can be done. The jig? Middle line is 5" in from the edge, other two are centered for the mounting bolts...Drill those two holes. Then, center and clamp onto a drawer front.. using the two holes as a guide for the drill...a combo square was set up, to help center the jig on the drawer..then switch ends, and do the other handle's holes. Twas a busy day...for 3 hours, maybe.. And..Igor is back home for "Spring Break" and used my broom to fly home... Stay tuned...
March 2, 20197 yr Popular Post Most people take more than 22.5 hours off for a vacation. I'm just saying Steve.
March 2, 20197 yr Cool idea for the handle jig. Pretty productive 8 hour day accomplished in 3 hours. I think your getting the hang of this woodworking thing.
March 2, 20197 yr Author Popular Post This one might be a tad long....5 hours in the shop, today....I think i did find another use for the tablesaw, though. . Much easier to run the router around.. got three drawer fronts "coved" need another jig set up.. grooves for the drawer bottoms... Stanley 45 was busy, today...all three grooves ran..turn the board around.. And let the Wards #78 do it's thing....dados on the ends.. Hogged the waste off with the tablesaw, then clean up saw marks, with the 78, or a chisel...wasn't quite done with these three boards.. same stop lines as the other drawers...same set up with the vise Might get the hang of this, someday...then go back and clean up each set of tails/pins now, I can set these fronts aside, and work on 6 drawer sides... Sides need a groove for the plywood bottom...and. dado for the back to sit in...tablesaw, then chisels to clean up..which left marking and cutting these, Then a bit of chisel work... Then a dry fit.. Not too bad? Then kept going.. one followed another...until.. Drawer #5...Left this sit..and sized a back for it (and the other two..) Cross cut for length, ripped for width..times 3. Was cutting plywood panels for the drawer bottoms....something wasn't working out right...got one panel perfect there other two weren't even close... So, spread some glue, drove some screws..added a few clamps... And swept the floor...had to borrow the house broom..Igor hasn't returned from Spring Break...and he used my broom to fly home... was getting a tad bit DEEP.... Stay tuned.

March 3, 20197 yr Author Popular Post OK, last night...went to Lowes and bought the plywood panel. And some screws, and a quart of "Puritan Pine" stain....on the way back home, almost hit a deer crossing a city street..while another was standing alongside the road... #3 drawer was sticky....turned out the back for the drawer was a tad too wide....new plug to fix the beltsander....drawer now fits.. Bottom two....got one into the clamps, and set back into the case to cure.. While I assembled this drawer. This drawer also got a set of handles....there was issues with the bolts that came with the handles.. One on the right has no threads. And, this was after I scrounged around to replace another bolt....that had threads, but, no head... Clamp details...I try to clamp the sides of the drawer, without touching the front.. And...this was the "good" side of the plywood...since I resized the backs...meant I had to resize the freshly cut plywood....almost wasn't enough room for me, the tablesaw and the plywood...then set up the fence, and finish the cuts to size....getting rid of the worst parts...swept things up, had enough for today...need to scrounge for one more handle bolt... Stay tuned...almost time for a finish?
