January 17, 20197 yr Popular Post Harbor Freight used to have packs of flux/acid brushes of 25 for a couple bucks. After looking it up, there are now 35 brushes to a pack. I only replace one after I don't get the glue washed out well. I think you will find these very handy. https://www.harborfreight.com/36-pc-12-in-horsehair-bristle-acid-shop-brushes-61880.html

January 17, 20197 yr Author Still not allowed to drive....and the weather ain't the best for a trip to Lima,OH.....had an old used paint brush...seemed to work.
January 17, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Late start for today...maybe 1500 hrs? Shop will be closed this Friday. May run the router around a bit....and try to cut a few pieces of wood. Might even take those clamps off.....hopefully without it flying apart.... Film @ 2300hrs....maybe?

January 17, 20197 yr Popular Post Running low...I think only one multi-meter, a couple of tarps maybe a couple of screwdriver sets...oh and flashlites located all over. I give away about all of it to family, friends, people driving by.
January 18, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Ok, 2 hours in the shop, before Mr. Gumption left the building...concentration was a bit low, too So...ran that router around a bit.. Then cut and almost fit a plywood panel.. Glue and nails. Not too worried about around the edges... Because this thing covers all of them. came out of the clamps, no issues....gave it a good clean up.. Fun part will be, when I attach this in place....screws come up from underneath.....Pencil holders.. Had to take a beltsander to the underside of the tray, leveled the playing field. Hauled a plank to the shop...cross cut @ 30" long...set one plank on top of the desk Hmmm, don't think I want THIS one...maybe the other half looks better? Much better....will need to joint an edge.. We have ways.. Helps to have a nice straight edge, when doing a lid...As for that curvy, wavy board? Thinking a few rip cuts, to make stock for bread board ends? Toss the worst in the fire pit Hauled the last of the boards to the shop, cross cut it to match the other two pieces.... Flipped and flopped a bit, til the gaps match, and the grain was close, big "X" to mark which faces go where....then fold the two together.. Joint both at the same time. Unfold, spread some glue, moosh the joint back and forth a bit...then clamps Lid can sit here a few days. Laid out a scrap block and a bevel gauge... To figure out the angle to bevel things to. Need to find enough room, to sit this to where I can attach things together....Need to clean off the tablesaw, have a few jobs for it.. May be a few days before I get back to this....stay tuned..
January 18, 20197 yr Popular Post Some really nice looking dovetails. Really liking the design of this too.
January 18, 20197 yr Popular Post All in 2 hours!!!???!!! Takes me that long to get the board into the basement shop!
January 18, 20197 yr Popular Post I used to think I got a lot done in a nights work, Steve makes it look like I was standing around shooting the breeze. Okay some nights I do.....
January 19, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Was looking at ways to attach bread board ends to the lid, besides the sliding dovetail I usually use....happen to find a Roy Underhill show..."The Tool Chest from Bristol"....might be worth a try? He didn't say whether the tenons got just glue, or did he use wedges? We'll see how things go along...back into Work Clothes, in the morning..
January 19, 20197 yr Popular Post Wow, this is really looking nice Steven. Attaching the top, I would outline it where it will sit and drill pilot holes from the top. Maybe that wasn't what you were wondering about? Anyhow, at your present rate of progress - if I have a truck roll around, say about this time next week you will have it done? I can load it up and bring it south?

Should be easy enough to pull off with your son living in Columbus...only about an hour on up to Steven's...might tell him to stop y H-F and pick up a couple moving blankets...don't forget the free falshlight coupon.
January 19, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Going to try to get a bit of work done....sometime after Lunch is done....hope the camera is all charged up....need to clear off that tablesaw first...trace around the desk, clamp the desk in place, and add a few screws....then see about some work on that lid....
January 19, 20197 yr Author Popular Post About 4 hours, today....have had better days in the shop.....traced around the desk unit, and drilled a few pilot holes... Was a good plan...except where those corner blocks were....kind of block the access to the holes...Clamping the desk in place was a fight...finally got a 3 x 3 chunk to help out Had to redrill a couple, and hope I didn't miss too badly...getting this thing onto the saw was"fun" And try and reach some of the screws.....set this aside...found out I had crack the poplar backer strip on the pencil tray.. Filler block was made and glued up. Used the fence to rip that nasty 1 x 6 into strips for bread board ends Best of the cuts....meh..tried the saw to cut a groove... Not great...came back later with the router table, and a straight cutter bit, and clean things up...Stanley 45 wasn't up for the job, today Underhill did a through tenon for his bread board ends..... Started out making this long tenon had to clean things up, too Mallet & chisel...that old plane did a decent job.. Then the next step.. Two through tenons, strange looking saw to remove the waste. So far, so good? Bad part was chopping through mortises in that little block back there....block did the splits...design change! Buzzed the tenons down, making this a tongue & groove joint...glue and clamps.... After the clamps come off...I'll pin things in place from the underside.....Same routine with the lid section... Same with this thing..when the clamps come off, I'll pin from the underside...swept the floor, called it a day... May head down after supper, and try to figure out an angle to get the lid and top to meet up.. Stay tuned....

January 20, 20197 yr Popular Post I took out the trash today; cleaned the bird feeders then put out some seed...Oh, and got the paper and the mail; while I was close to the road walked out to it validate why I should do nothing more today... I'm beat so you've got to be exhausted. I envy your energy & space to work where your tongue doesn't stick to a chisel this time of year.
January 21, 20197 yr Author Popular Post Well, today's misadventures were only 2 hours long....might have got a wee bit done... Got the top and the lid all cleaned up...ends were squared up a bit...Decided to figure out an angle...needed a bit of scrap.. Shorter one is for the top shelf...longer one for the lid. Once these fit nicely, I could set the tablesaw for a bevel rip...top came out just about right.. Close? When it came time to rip the other side... Had to double check as to which face went where...also cleaned the cut a bit, bandsaw did a wavy cut. Cleaned the saw marks up, drilled a few holes.. And attached the top shelf...need to make a baker's dozen plugs. Installed some hinges...usual toys.. Almost needed an extra hand...wax on the threads helped. Finally.. C clamps are doing a glue up... Adding a book rest...a view from the end? We getting there.....and a before? Before all the angles were made...making sure the lid was long enough... Just 2 hours today may start on the drawers..next time... Stay tuned
