October 21, 20187 yr That happens to me sometimes too,Steven, it is frustrating I hit the wrong key and wverything is gone. Don't worry the pictures tell the story. You are hard at making another heirloom piece. Keep up the good work, Herb Edited October 21, 20187 yr by Dadio

October 21, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Hmmm, ballgame wasn't going too well.....dryer needed checked, again....not quite dry? Set up for mortise work....after I had redone the rails ( 1" too short) and cut the tenons on the bandsaw... Rawhide mallet, Lew's Mallet is still on Vacation...I mark out the location for the morise, using the tenon, a combo square, and one of them "hard to find when you need it" pencils....Clamp to hold things still for a bit...Backsaw? To make a cut like this, then the chisel and mallet.. To dig a hole. Mainly where the saw can't reach. Chisel to "pop" the waste out.. Until it is cleaned out, then the test fit... Repeat this three more times.. Then glue and clamps, checking for square...checked the dryer.....after the glue had set up enough, remove most of the clamps...pin the joints.. On this first frame..I added the kicker.. Which involved drilling a few holes, and counter sink them...have the drill handy.. Where these frames attach to the sides of the case..needed two more such holes.. Had to clamp this up..to pull the gaps closed.. Got the one frame done, still cussing about the game, dryer still not done....get a start on the other frame ( no kicker needed) Got two more mortises done..then the dryer was done...so I called it a night. Depending on what happens today... Stay tuned
October 21, 20187 yr Author Was almost ready for assembly...ran out of screws....means an hour round trip to Wall E World.....5 - 8 deep at each open checkout...even at the scan-n-gos... Back home, waiting on Taco Soup.....maybe later, I'll get back to the shop? Film @ 2300 hrs, ZULU...
October 21, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Ok, pictures from today's attempt at woodworking. Frame #2 all clamped up...might have just enough clamps? Yes, they are all the same size....but, right now they are installed.. Top of the case attaches to these corner blocks. Cleats pre-drilled. Shelves will get attached to these.... Set up and used this old plane...needed a place for the plywood back to hide in... IF there was even a hint of a knot along there...that plane would find it....used a chisel to remove the worst ones. Hmmm..drawer front? maybe? will see how things go... Layout lines...to show me where to attach all the parts...then transfer these to the other side panel.. Then use a BIG square to run the lines across. was all set to attach things.. Only to find out..I didn't have enough screws, that were the needed sizes...2" and longer just won't work... So...waiting on glue to cure, drill batteries to charge up...SOUP to get done...Maybe later, I can do a bit of assembly? Stay tuned
October 22, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Screws have been bought, and put to use.. And.. Cleats..for some shelves... haul this mess off the bench, place the other side panel on the bench...use more screws. Then haul it off the bench again...slip the top panel onto the bench.. Then back onto the floor.. As the top needed the front corners cut...and a bit of sanding... Maybe I can get the plywood for a back..and a drawer bottom, tomorrow? Then start on the face frame, two doors, and a drawer? Stay tuned....why does my back hurt?
October 23, 20187 yr Author Popular Post So much for "Closed On Monday".....had work to do....and go buy some plywood... Had to kill some time, before the trip to Lowes, and haul the Boss to Wall E World...so.. Fixed a "problem' with the tablesaw.. As the mitre gauge is too small....also, don't like dust build up, so there is a gap under it... Ran this down both tracks. Checked for square... Back in the late 70s-early 80s..was working out of a 2-1/2 car garage.....this is the saw I started out on. Dad bought it NEW at Sears. Had one last board to haul to the shop....needed to cut it down to make rails for the face frame.. After the bark fell off. Then reset the saw for a rip cut... All the parts for the face frame. Joints are to be 1/2 Lap, so, I had to set the height of the saw blade.... About the same thickness....we'll go with that.. Width is set to match those two stiles behind them..Need to clean these up a bit...and cut a detail... Bandsaw wanted to burn things a bit..we have ways.. Beltsander couldn't work...Seymour Smith & Son did... All cleaned up. As for them half-a-laps Old stand-by. Laid out where the rails will go, and marked the stiles.. Using the part for each location.. This one goes along under the drawer opening. Got about here, all set up to do the rest of the "laps"..Boss wanted to go to the store...might as well pick up some plywood.. Bought two of these...good thing, too.....needed 25" in width, panel is 24" wide...but...it IS 48" long....so...width becomes length... Hoisted the case up on it's nose, between the two benches.. Pipe clamps to pull things tight and square..F style clamp was for square, was about 3/4" out... Had to cut the second panel, to get a filler strip at the top.. But, how to work on the face frame, and still get to the tools? Not as easy as it looks...had to add some thin scraps under the feet, to cover the tool well.. And, to balance things out, needed the same size pieces out in front. Was checking one of the stiles....something wasn't quite right...one side of the drawer runner was higher than the other....made a block to set the "high side" with.. Unhook the high side, drive the gauge block in place, re-attach the frame. square and level, now... had issues with one of the lap cuts.. Saw was kicking back little chunks at me...almost shredded the waste area....Rest of the laps cleaned up nicely.. Was getting a bit tired...and sore.. Got these two set up...tomorrow I can counter bore a few holes. Then a pilot hole for the screw. Might be able to install the face frame...TOMORROW.. That is quite enough "fun" for one day....Even fixed a shelf....and re-attached the top...a bit tighter, this time... Stain will be the same as the Fireplace Surround.... Stay tuned....
October 23, 20187 yr Busy day considering it was a Monday. Really starting to take shape now. I apparently missed the table saw addition. Those are pretty good 'ole saws.
October 23, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Saw and I are old friends....late 80s, I went out and bought a new 10" saw from Sears...113 series....old saw was returned to Dad's garage.... Ok, just after Lunch today....the face frame was installed.. A 3 drill job. Clamps to help align things, and pull glue joints together....Counter-bored holes for the screws...Issues with the far side flairing out at the bottom...a few gaps, here & there. There was the cut out from the bottom rail...figured I could make enough decent plugs from it.. ALWAYS make a couple extra...never know if one will take off out of sight.. To install these, just need the glue, a hammer, and a screwdriver... Bit chewed up one of the plugs, another reason to make extras. Pop one plug out, coat the narrow end with glue, hammer into place keeping an eye on the grain match Something like this? Let the glue dry a bit..while I get the trimming tools out.. Chisel to pop off most of the waste...block plane to smooth things out.. Whut plug? A bit of sanding to finish the job. Blank for the drawer front needs a little extra... Length was fine....height wasn't. When the clamps come off the case, they will wind up here. Need to go out and pick one more plank of white oak....to build the doors' frames....so, looks like I will build the drawer first? IF I can get that case OFF of my bench, that is.....stay tuned...maybe more, later today..

Looking good so far. The grain in that drawer front is insane. It's really going to stand out once all is done & finished.
October 23, 20187 yr Author Popular Post Ok..most of the glue has cured...clamps came off the case....beltsander , router. palm sander...scraper....time for a few PIPS? Front corners have been rounded over, same with all the other hard corners. Plugs have disappeared.. There is 3 plugs in this view.....I think. Side view? A look at the feet? White things are plastic, nail-on pads. feet and the cut-outs are all rounded over...top? Not too hateful? Scraper?.....After the sanders got done, and the router before that...final smoothing was with a scraper.. And, IF that long handle looks familiar.. The Stanley #70 has almost the same "billy club" handle as the Stanley #82. Finish? Followed by a coat of clear gloss poly? Clamps came off, where'd they go? That piece of pine is merely a caul...will come off with the clamps..later. I think that might be enough for one day? Stay tuned Edited October 23, 20187 yr by steven newman
October 24, 20187 yr Gonna' be one great looking piece with the grain in this. Nothing boring to look at from any angle.
October 24, 20187 yr Author "Warning, warning, Danger, Will Robinson" The Boss has opened those doors on the "pantry" that this Microwave cabinet will replace.......film at 2300 hrs, ZULU.... Edited October 24, 20187 yr by steven newman
October 24, 20187 yr Author Well, she got the top two out of four shelves cleaned up....two trashbags full, plus a bin for the firepit, later.... Tried to help out...and gave up....
October 25, 20187 yr Author I guess this would be the "Impact Area"? Still one shelf to go.....Got the drawer front out of the clamps... Wanted one straight edge...then rip the other edge for width....leaving enough extra to plane smooth.. Then square the ends. Then finally work on the face.. Planes did not like this grain...scraper did. test fit? I tweak this for a better fit..once the rest of the drawer is built....Ripped the 1 x 12 down to match the height of the drawer front....then cut for length.. One of these days, I might get the hang of doing these things.. Was trying out a different way....still working out the "bugs"......will describe when I have it down pat....got both sides done....was a bit confused as they are almost exact matches of each other...then a dry fit.. Needs the back made, and a groove for a bottom ran.... took about 10 minutes to set this plane up.....went from a Rebate Plane to a Plough Plane. Having Supper, right now....may wait until tomorrow to finish the drawer? Stay tuned
