Popular Post steven newman Posted October 25, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 25, 2018 Ok, part 2 of the Drawer Building 101? Made a jig to hold the parts still, long enough to make a groove.. Once the groove had started..rubbed the sides with the candle....made things move a little better...reset this jig... Helps to mark which is the "top" "bottom" and inside...DAMHIKT Then rebuild the jig again..and the Stanley 45....needed a few new parts.. Skinny screwdriver to change the nickers...one of which needed a quick hone. Long rods instead of the shorter ones..more balance that way. Cutter is a #18 1/2, matches the thickness of the pine boards...rebuild.. Long rods and the cutter installed..nicker on the other side has been rotated to the cutter... About like this...both "skates" have a nicker, for going across the grain. needed a way to hold things steady, while I put this plane together Another reason for these long rods..stick a little extra out the side....and clamp in the vise... All assembled..skates have to be even with the edges of the cutter, to let the nickers do their job..Depth stop was set fence was set to leave about 1/2" between the dado and the end of the board..jig made up.. Bar across is screwed down, after the vise is tightened down. The one on the far end. Drag the plane backwards a few times Allows just the nickers to cut....I don't like "blow-outs" where the cutter starts and exits, so... Backsaw to deepen the nicker cuts at the start and exit points....plane does make a mess, though.. Between the grooves and this.. This makes a lot of chips....before each side leaves the jig.. One of the "twins" made 3 pilot holes...the other twin came by, after the side had been flipped over.. Why change bits, when you can just change drills Then rinse and repeat for the other side's dado, and holes. i used the sides to mark the length of the back of the drawer...was already "tall" enough. Then use both the back and a side, to size the drawer' bottom panel.. Had one more cut to make, before the glue, screws, and clamps.. Long time ago, I started clipping the bottom corners at the back of a drawer. Makes it easier to start the drawer into the case. Smeared a bit of glue around. Pipe clamp has a caul at each end. Fun trying to do them at once. Glue in the dados, then 3 screws. Screws along the back edge of the panel were set, AFTER a check for square A little toe-in at the back is fine...as long as there isn't a toe-out to match....both sides toe-in about 1/16" at the back..close enough..added the rest of the clamps Evens out the clamping pressure. Then stash this mess somewhere, out of my way.. And allow the glue to cure ( maybe I can get some handles for it, while i wait?) hauled the rest of the Oak from upstairs to the shop....had a puzzle to work on.. Because I need to build 2 doors, and that topper shelf...out of what I have left.. These three are 6-1/2 wide...by 3/4" thick....need 8" wide sides.... These two are only 5-1/2" wide, and are 3/8" thick....door panels? Then there is this chunk... A 1 x 12....need part of this for the very top of the case... Without getting the crack involved. Top of the case needs to be 9" wide.. I also need a shelf for right above the microwave oven...8" wide....along with 8" wide sides Will spend a bit of time, trying to get a "cut list" done up....Single Brain Cell Sketch Up needs all the help it can get.. Stay tuned....this MIGHT get interesting p_toad, Cal, Grandpadave52 and 4 others 7 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted October 26, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 26, 2018 Cut list puzzle....got a few cuts made... Best way is to just start cutting, and not over-think things...First two 1 x 6-1/2" boards provided parts for the sides of the topper.. One board for the wider parts...other for all the narrow 2" wide parts..... Only needed one caul....the other side panel didn't need any.. Let these two sit overnight....Got the top shelf cut down to size.. But what to do with the cut-off? I'm sure I could find something to do with this.....Ripped a lot of 2" wide sticks.. Longer ones for door stiles...may have just enough rail stock? Still have one 1 x 6 x6' Besides a split on the end...there is a bit of snipe...scrap. Also have both of the 3/8" thick planks Depending on how the door frames turn out...may need a panel glued up..... Under the top shelf, there is supposed to be a 1 x 3 rail...hmmmm.... How about a Live edge 1x under the shelf? have a skinnier one for under the mid shelf, too... I think that will do for today. Even got a start on fitting the drawer....was a tad too tall on one corner... Stay tuned... p_toad, Harry Brink, Cal and 2 others 5 Quote
Cal Posted October 26, 2018 Report Posted October 26, 2018 Really going to town on it now Steve. Great tip on easing that corner bottom. I believe I will start doing this also. lew, steven newman and Grandpadave52 2 1 Quote
Popular Post steven newman Posted October 27, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 27, 2018 Ok..must have been working way too hard, for a Friday? Start with the good news first...these two are still clamped up...at least until I need those clamps Then I can take one upstairs, sit it beside the Microwave and see how much room I need before I can add the mid shelf....next.. Drawer has been trimmed for a snug fit....once the handles are in place, I can fine tune things... Got 4 blanks for the stiles cut to length..took a few tries..but Was an issue about width of the stiles...couple were a bit wavy...we have ways.. I took the WR #62 to this mess....I needed to find a center in the rough opening, set two stiles between the side and the center mark, measure between the stiles, add an inch to that...to find out how long to cut these things down..into 4 rails....(turned out, I needed a fifth one..or..just a fifth?).. Got things cut for length..at least they were all the same width....thickness? these were still 4/4...needed 3/4" thick parts...set the tablesaw up, and "buzzed off " the extra wood....then face planed them smooth....Planes..? Oh yeah..needed 9 grooves made ( total, counting a remake)...didn't feel like resetting the Stanley 45.. Plane was made in 1864...a wee bit before my time. Cuts a 1/4" wide groove....will come in handy, IF I ever find it's "match", to do T & G joints.. Plane makes curlies for shavings....LOTS of curlies. Combe square to tell me when I am deep enough...no depth stop on this plane...needed a lot of candle wax, too. The rails just used the front half of this jig.. At least these went quicker than the longer stiles did,,legs were getting crampy...but, I got all 8 grooves made.. Then marked the rails for 1/2" long tenons....and set up a jig.. It keeps the part from tipping a bit. This wasn't the trouble spot.. It was when I did the haunched part of each tenon.....one was missing the tenon Which meant I had to go back, and mill a 5th rail...grooves, length, width, thickness and finally tenons done the right way.. Dug out the mortise jig..and just set it on the bench, for now...I did use it to hold a stile still, long enough to measure how long a panel will be needed..and used a rail to figure the width of the panel.....needed 8-1/8" have 5-1/2"...another glue up... Just let this sit..until tomorrow....went and swept the floor... Three dustpan loads from here, and... two more from here....then closed up shop....and went upstairs. Maybe tomorrow, I can get a little bit done? Stay tuned lew, Cal, Grandpadave52 and 4 others 7 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted October 27, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 27, 2018 Ok...the "To Do List"....Tasks were to Glued up last night....about ready to come out of the clamps. Then it and the two side panels were squared on the ends, and ripped to 8" width Next? well, Boss wanted to see how tall this will be....WAS going to layout for a few holes to be drilled...will get that tomorrow.. Crosscut the thin boards to 19-1/8" long...then jointed the edges for a glue up. Close enough? Glue, clamps, and cauls were next.. Set this aside, and get the other thin panel glued up....let these two sit, while a I run some errands.. Gene's mortise chisel, Rowdy Yates' Mallet ( Rawhide?) did quite a bit of chopping...had to redo the edge of the chisel...lost a tiny chip off the edge. 600 grit stone and a strop...back to work....that curly thing? One of the tenons was a bit too fat, on one side.....chisel, powered by my chin...removed to excess. Chisel from Aldi's Both frames were soon done. waiting on the panels... Panels were trimmed square as needed, then I laid a frame on top of the panel, to see where ti rip the excess width off..both edges...scraper to clean up the glue joints... Thought I could just bevel one side...nope...had to bevel from both sides, for the panels to fit into the 1/4" grooves... Called a Junior jack plane...was a little bit handier doing all them bevels... Glue, clamps and cauls....this is the Inside of the door.. Outside view is a tad crowded....then work on door #2.... I can set this aside. Not too much of the bevels will show.. Hinges were bought.. Knobs were bought.. Along with washers to back them up. Brushes were also stocked up on.. Yeah, yeah...but for applying stain..works. I think I cleaned this spot three times, today.....May sit down for the rest of tonight....always tomorrow. Got about 1/2 of the scheduled tasks done, today.....try again tomorrow for the other half? Stay tuned...for some reason, I am a wee bit tuckered out... Harry Brink, Fred W. Popular Post steven newman Posted October 28, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 28, 2018 I just can't seem to stay out of the shop, today....had laundry to check on.....wound up running the corded object called a router... Laid these out twice, double checked even....one socket was 1/8 lower than the other? went and cut off the offending extras to level the shelf...one side was installed via a hammer and a hardwood block....no glue was used. Top shelf has 3 counterbored screws per side, Need to make a pair of cleats, to attach the topper to the case...AFTER I sand the "H" out of it...A back needs a recess between the two shelves...rabbetting bit. A look at the over all picture... Doors get the same knobs. One door came out of the clamps just fine....the other door was having "issues" so it will sit until tomorrow, after the "fix" has sat a spell.. Sand the doors down, as well...then install. Might just get this done....before Thanksgiving... Stay tuned... DuckSoup, p_toad, Fred W. Hargis Jr and 5 others 8 Quote

Popular Post steven newman Posted October 28, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 28, 2018 (edited) Wet, dreary, nasty day outside....again...decided to hide out in the shop for a while.. Dungeon Creek....if we get a lot of rain...this happens.....on it's way to the floor drain... And..it got worse later...had a hail storm come through today.... A view of the fixed drawer....more on that hole in a bit...needed to change over this thing.. To use a rabbetting bit...after I honed the cutting edges... Needed a chisel to square the rounded corners up.. Then mark a plywood panel, to make a back for the topper.. Was just enough room to make the cut on the bandsaw...then glue and nails to attach the panel... Needed a few plugs made, installed and trimmed down, before I could round over the edges... Keeps the block from wiggling around...Next..was a door.. remember that hole? Try to find it here. Hinges.. Kind of like that Yankee drill...VIX bit wants to wander around. Knob and hinges installed.. Note that thin strip of wood? I had that under the door, while attaching the hinges to the case..second door needed trimmed for width.. After the bandsaw remove the bulk of the extra...plane to joint the edge...test fit..joint the other edge...repeat until the door fits..wasn't taking all that much off each time.. Didn't want to take too much off... need to install the magnetic catches, to keep these two shut. Step back a bit...ready? Topper has been attached with cleats. Big opening is for the Microwave to go.. Top edges are rounded over, plugs sanded flush, From edges of the shelf and the sides are also rounded over. waiting on the "Weathered Oak" stain to dry...and then a coat or two of Amber Shellac....then maybe a better PIP post? Feet (on me) was getting wet....time to stop for a while... Stay tuned..we be in the Finishing section, now... Edited October 28, 2018 by steven newman Grandpadave52, DuckSoup, Fred W. steven newman Posted October 29, 2018 Author Report Posted October 29, 2018 Second coat of Shellac was been brushed on.....was getting a "BUZZ" while doing it. The Boss has already started moving things around....getting ready for the "Big Move" coming up the steps.....when the last coat is dry....may need a couple strong backs to get this out of the shop....then I can inventory what leftovers I have....may see what can be built from that.... Popular Post steven newman Posted October 30, 2018 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 30, 2018 Roh-kay, Raggie....here we go. Moving day. table from the foyer moved. Old Ugly Cabinet moved out of the kitchen...left a big nasty opening in the kitchen floor, will fix this when we get some replacement tiles.. The goal here was to make things easier for wider bodies to get through here, to the Dinning Room... So...Topper and the drawer were hauled upstairs first...NOBODY wanted to wake up and help, and the Boss wasn't able to lift things up the stairs...so One step at a time, finally got the base upstairs, and as soonas all four feet and my two hit the kitchen floor, this thing was merely slid around as needed... Topper and the drawer installed....tried to add the catches before the case came upstairs...one went on nicely enough, the other had been broken at the store...went in the trash..anyway, this was as far as I got for a bit.. Fancy drawer joints? Front view? And, you can see the cleats that hold the topper in place... . Need to fix the flooring...but this is what she wanted....Microwave fits like it was built for it. Power strip hung on one side, Boss has already started to load this thing up. Not sure what she'll do with the opened areas...yet. May get a series of narrow shelves between it and that door jamb? May get storage between this and the stove, too. For some reason, I am a bit tired out, today.... Grandpadave52, Fred W. Hargis Jr, Cal and 3 others 6 Quote
